This was always an issue in these times. The servants always saw to the demise of their masters due to the insecurities of coming from humble beginnings. The servants were part of the reason living in the palace was unbearable. They always talked behind their backs and schemed not only for their masters but sometimes if made upset, against their masters. It really was sad for these people born in nobility being expected to uphold a certain status while constantly being surrounded by snakes, must have been so hard. Though I will say women coming from nobility had it a lot harder than the men. The entitlement of having so many wives speaks to the selfishness of man.

They did not have that many wife's out of greed, it was necessary. The life expectancy for a royal offspring is super low in a time where most illnesses could not be treated or were just unknown in general till later. So to combat this, they have each main tribe send a tribute, who will later produce royal heirs, a necessity since they saw the Emperor as a kind of God on Earth. The tributes directly effect not only the royal line, but the tribes they belong to. They are essentially the living symbols of their respective tribes. And they are lavished with food and fabrics and jewelry that couldnt be accesses by the rest of the world. They each had a small palace to live in with several maids and guards to help and protect them. They could directly influence the emperor They had it hard, sure, but let's not paint history different than it actually is.
