Hey! Thanks for linking our channel. I can understand the taboo in the Hispanic community regarding special needs. I love when other Hispanic families find us and can relate. We try to help other family members understand what autism really means💙 I love watching families of all different cultures and ethnicities and find comfort and connections with all of them.

Yes! I understand completely. With my almost 3 year old brother, the very mention of Autism was almost a slap in the face to them! But slowly they are accepting that may be the case!

YES! The Hispanic community NEEDS more info. I met a lovely family with a 12 year old with autism who has limited speech. The dad told me "we are new to autism." Their son is 12. No one told them why their son does what he does. No one gave them resources. I was so happy to answer a ton of questions, but it definitely highlighted to me how different access to information is in different communities.
@tubester4567

I find it very hard to believe that a child can reach 12, not talk properly, and no doctor or teacher has ever raised the topic. Does the kid go to school? Theres no way you can reach 12, not talk properly and nobody has raised the subject. I think its much more likely the family was in denial.

A little bit of advice, I think it would be beneficial to talk one person at a time. I think it can be overwhelming for everyone to be taking initiative when having her have calm hands and learn to wait for something that is coming. My son has autism & he usually need about 30 seconds to a minute to process the information. My husband and I usually over talk and not give him enough time. So we decided to change things and it really worked. Just a little suggestion because that’s something I do notice. All love for you guys. You’re an amazing family and team ❤️

I have Autism. I wonder if you see that there is a consistent pattern that when multiple people ask Abbie a question and multiple people are asking multiple questions, Abbie will have a loud expression and/or shut down and then you guys ask her why she has a mood or say that Abbie must just not be into the situation. When multiple people ask me questions and multiple questions at a time, I feel the same way when if that had not happened, I would have been able to have participated. Many times I start to shut down with all the rapid questions and then Abbie starts to respond with loud expressions too.

Euphøria Musiç autism is a spectrum. Some autistic people can talk, some cannot. Some have high needs, some have low needs. Many autistic people have high intelligence levels and abilities but simply process the world differently than a neurotypical person. So, just because someone is able to type a comment to explain their situation doesn’t mean they aren’t autistic. I hope this helps! :)

I was wondering how you get Abbie to give blood, when she has to have labs. I'm sure with being on the types of medications she is on, that they have to do labs sometimes in order to make sure her doses are appropriate. Does she understand this at all or is it a traumatic experience for her? Thanks for all you guys do to educate us!

Four years ago, we got custody of one of our grandsons. Three years ago, he was diagnosed with autism (and a few other things). I was treading water in a whirlpool, fighting to stay afloat. Then, watching SBSK, a saw the vlog he did with your family. I have been following you ever since and have learned so much more about autism and how to deal with it. More than I have from my grandson's therapy, much, much more. I don't live close enough to come to meet ups or support group meetings, but I certainly wish I did. Also, being older, I don't feel like a lot of things are geared toward grandparents as caregivers for autistic kids.

As someone who is in a Hispanic family. This is so true Autism or any mental illness is considered taboo and no one ever acknowledges it. My brother had Autism and til is day my dad still doesn’t recognizes that Autism is something that will always be apart of our lives

Community based instruction and job coaching are two areas the school I teach in really emphasize for our students. It is amazing how many skills can be worked on out in the community and we have found our students acquire skills more quickly and generalize them with better accuracy. One of the most difficult things is generalizing skills taught in a school setting to real world situations. A lot of our students master skills in the classroom but not at home or in the community. When we go out in the community we can see which skills need more teaching in the community.

I am glad that family is open and teaching others in her culture. From my perspective, several cultures shy away &/or just stare because people with disabilities (my case physically disabled using a wheelchair) are not independently out in the community. I have lived in the same complex for over 10years and I am not of most of their culture and still not accepted at all.
