You're right. You can by a million-dollar house with a deposit and take out a loan. Then, 15 years or so later the house is paid off and worth 3 million. Debt is how money is made, but you may still fail. Tenant issues, house violations, and repairs... it's all a headache. I think the market is a better option. Positivity, persistence, and patience are how you succeed in the stock market.

I wish more people in my family would have told me when I was younger or in my teens. I am the only one in my close family with stocks and I have been helping my brothers and sisters by setting up a broker account for each of them and I helped fund it with some stocks to get them started. I hope it will keep them motivated and most importantly help them be financially independent in the future with a extra source of income.

@@hysterios7294 I'm not a financial advisor, and I wouldn't take advice from people on the internet. That being said, if my kid asked me how to invest I'd tell him to invest in low-expense ratio broad-market index funds like VTI or VOO... and then just consistently invest in them regardless of what the market is doing (especially as the market crashes). Don't stop investing when your stocks go down, just keep investing... Live pragmatically (always save and invest more than you make). Don't keep upgrading your lifestyle as you make more money. Do that for a few decades and I'd wager you are a millionaire. That's what I'd tell my kid. I personally don't do that, I invest in single stocks, but I wouldn't recommend that for others.

Just been doing some end of year re-evaluating of my portfolio. Other reasons I’m selling: 1. In mutual funds with high expense ratios (invested in by a financial advisor before I was paying good attention to such things) that don’t make sense for me to keep. 2. In companies that have a very low dividend ratio (just sold one yesterday) with slow growth and I know I can make better dividends with less risk on a diversified ETF. 3. Just sold Facebook because I don’t want to support the company directly any more with my money because of ethical and privacy concerns. Wanting to get some cash out of the market to buy a house in the next year or two.
