Sweat is just water and I think sodium, it doesnt have a particular smell. Bacteria in your armpits and other places on your body excrete when you sweat and the bacteria process it.

Fun fact ladies. If you get laser hair removal of those areas they won't sweat. Even if their is no hair. A side effect of laser hair removal is it also kills the sweat gland (since they are attached to the hair follicle) FYI, the smell that is gross from sweat is usually from bacteria on the skin. The most bacteria is in the hair areas (since its easier for them to remain there).

Humans have two kinds of sweat glands. The type commonly found in your pits and around the groin (Apocrine glands) release a thicker sweat that is rich in proteins. This is the kind that smells. The glands the cover most of the body, including the chest, (Eccrine glands) are basically just releasing salty water, so it doesn't smell. The glands around the pits and groin also release pheromones. That said, there's a difference from the scent of being unwashed, and the smell of fresh secretions, so please don't stop showering thinking it's going to be attractive or something.

No, that's actually just because bacteria can't grow well in that area, unlike armpits which are constantly incubated slightly below body temperature. Man chests also don't smell that much.

@@TheKeller101 apocrine glands in the armpits, scalp and private areas sweat differently than the rest of the body. That sweat is a thicker more oily substance that has proteins the bacteria in our skin breaks down, which is what produces the smell. Sweat itself is odourless. What OP was referring to as the microbiome is exactly that, the bacteria living in those areas. Humans are just giant spaceships for billions of bacteria that perform helpful functions for us. Just so happens they're smelly when they eat.
