I remember when James Labrie’s album Elements of Persuasion came out. I was actually taking private lessons with Mike Mangini at the time. Mike was over the moon w/ how his drums sounded in the mix on that album (and man do they still sound amazing on that album). But being a guitar player, I was real interested in who James had playing the leads on the album. My headspace at that time w/ guitar playing and the nature of being at Berklee was where you would expect it to be as a shred and Petrucci fan. Upon first listen I remember thinking “Pfft I could play all of those leads..” But upon each listen Marco’s greatness became clearer and clearer for me. His blend of melody and technique was like the best combination of Petrucci, Lukather, and Andy Timmons. Digesting Marco’s playing on that album will always be an integral part of my development as a musician

I first found out about Marco through his take on the (now legendary) JTC Larry Carlton track. Yep, the one that Guthrie first played along. And I was like "MAN this is tasty!". So I looked up and followed his work. I think he is one of the most exciting players of recent (and current) years! He is also a competent drummer, therefore has an amazing sense of rhythm and groove and that shows in his playing.

I first heard him on the song "Drained" but I thought it was Petrucci for the longest time. I have followed his solo work ever since then. A couple of years ago he did a promotional video called "Beneath the Surface" and that is probably the best solo I have ever heard, in my opinion. It is crazy how he can make a 2 minute demonstration sound so good.

Is this one of Scar Symmetry's tracks that Per Nilsson released a while back for people to jam over? Sounds incredible, wish I was good enough to play through changes like that. Great work again Levi.

this more diatonic playing is amazing but I like Sfogli best on jazz fusion records, like Alex Argento and Virgil Donati's solo albums

I’d rather hear this guy doing any other genre, because even though I like his choices for the lead, it just feels like the intro to an instructional video, about how he’s going to teach one how to solo, using the techniques he just displayed. I’m going to checkout his work doing the jazz fusion, that you mentioned.

Well this solo is just something he did over a Scar Symmetry backing track for a solo contest Per Nilsson and Strandberg Guitars were holding. It's not one of his own composed tunes. He just released a new solo album titled Welcome to Oogly World which I highly recommend checking out. @@CorbCorbin

@@CorbCorbin on 'the quiet place' by virgil donati, there's a really heavy section and then it breaks down and Sfogli plays this incredibly constructed solo with a strat type sound. Also on 'vibrations', 'groovus in fabula' and 'synchronal steps'by alex argento (only on youtube) he plays some killer solos. plenty more examples too

@@khaiminlal_vaiphei just checked and it's definitely Marco! he plays very differently there to what I'd seen of him on youtube. He does quite a similar style of solo on Alex Argento's new track 'Flashlights'
