It kinda annoys me when people say slice and drive are opposites. Slice is the opposite of topspin and the opposite of a drive is a soft shot. You can drive slices as hard as topspin shots but it often leaves you no margin. You can also hit soft topspin shots and even topspin dropshots, though the latter won't win you much once the surprise wears off.

Djokovic did the sliding backhand pass against Alcaraz in the final game of Wimbledon, but somehow Alcaraz got to it with a equally amazing volley. I think that point gave him the edge

What’s fun about these is they’re drawing on multiple generations of tennis. It’s fun to compare the styles of tennis over the years. I used to love watching Tommy Haas, was delighted to see him in the lovely Monfils clip.

how does a sliding backhand count as "inventing a new shot"? He's just sliding and performing a backhand....I mean that's what happens countless times in ANY gravel match; sliding and executing shots?

@@jeremyneiderhoffjust because he consistently hits it doesn’t mean he invented it because that implies he was the first ever person to hit that shot. It’s more reasonable to say djokovic perfected that shot not invented it.

@catalyst2155 Жыл бұрын
@@luc7054 Yes he has and the person to inspire the sliding backhand shot is Djokovic. Correct me if I'm wrong, I have not seen any player before Djokovic consistently hit sliding backhands. He has made it his own specialty shot and anyone mentioning sliding backhands will attribute that shot to him. All the new guys such as Sinner take inspiration from him to learn that technique. It's the same way how Cristiano Ronaldo hits freekicks with knuckle-ball technique which people attribute to him as an innovator of the skill which others have taken inspiration from to emulate his way of taking freekicks.

@@catalyst2155Sliding two-handers. Sliding one-handers have regularly come off Federer's racquet, probably among others. And wasn't Nadal pretty good at sliding backhands even in ca. 2008? I remember he hit some great ones in that Wimbledon final and also a monster against Djokovic in Montreal.

It depends how broadly you define shots. In a sense every single shot ever hit is unique in its exact shape, so all shots are new, and in another sense all shots are separated only by degrees of what moves how much, so none is entirely new. But here are some shots I think you won't see from (m)any players other than Federer: -inside-out one-handed backhand drive with your back to the court (against Dodig? "Yes, I know I'm the greatest.") -behind-the-head lob (exho against Rafa) -fake drop volley moonball onto the baseline (AO 2017 SF) -Jump forehand smash pass off a smash while moving diagonally back from the net (Against Roddick in 2002) -on-the-run shoulder-height one-handed flick drive crosscourt backhand (Wimbledon SF 2015)
