I talked to a man that is a retired GM manager. I was complaining about there are some things that fail commonly. When one certain thing fails all the time why not redesign it and fix it. He said they made contracts with suppliers and the union and it was next to impossible to change a design before the contract runs out. They would rather pay warranty claims and damage customer experience than change a design early.

There is of course the "one horse shay" phenomenon. Its a poem by Oliver Wendall Holmes that's a bit difficult to read due to the early English he used. To summarize, (yes, spoiler ahead), The Deacon of the local church was upset at having to take his carriage in for repairs every time something broke so he commissioned the best craftsmen to use only the highest grade materials to construct a new one. It was "The Deacon's Masterpiece". It is a humorous anecdote to the idea of having every part of a structure be the best material and craftsmanship so no parts break before any other. 100 years to the day after the carriage was built, it collapsed in a heap of dust leaving the then Deacon and his wife sitting in the road.

All these fed up big legacy have only man-ager stealing bonuses for impressing and cheating analysts with faked good quarterly results and these stupid know nothing better than their Excel-sheets. They had 100 years to learn how and on cost of people and tier one to three suppliers in the background who also start their own car businesses to end consumers. However legacy is an old lady with too much cosmetics on. Tesla only learns instantly and with TeslaOne they are just not to beat. Like Daniel said they have no high vertical integration to do so and change things fast enough in legacy and the workers unions like mafia kills them as they are only looking for themselves and NOT the workers that can get more in the Tesla universe or must look for a different task in life because stupid routines are soon done by Teslas Robots as machines making machines 24/7 with the utmost of precision. So better get your kids the best education for tasks and jobs they also fill with their core competencies otherwise they are lost in transition or become cannon fodder! If you look the black clouds everywhere!🤒 Think if people realize what goes really on at Tesla and at which pace they forget about EV and cars… The shares will skyrocket for those who understand it’s today the only sound long term investment besides weapons and pharmaceuticals.😂

I cannot recall any other company that discloses its plans and practices to the degree that Tesla does. For analysts to be ignorant of what they are doing and planning requires an act of will - simply refusing to avail themselves of a wealth of information. I mean they don't even need to read research reports - just log onto KZbin and start watching, and yet they are always making mistakes, missing developments, and repeating falsehoods. Thank you Sam for doing this. It is fascinating.

It was pretty obvious some years ago that LFP is a better option than Ternary cells. But everyone has to do the same thing so LFP got ignored. M3P solves the performance gap but maintains the safety of LFP. It’s not just that Tesla moves fast. The others don’t move at all.

I remember pretty well that the consensus in the industry was that LFP would be ideal for automotive applications, but Musk needed to be pigheaded and put NCA cells in his cars. I’d even suggest Fed Gov considers ban, extra tariff or no incentives on lithium ion cars when there is a known safer option. If people want the extra power or range not getting LFP then maybe they should have to pay into an compensation fund the Fed Gov tariff could invest those funds in to help cover costs of EV fire response and recovery plus medical expenses if anyone is hurt.

@@hvh377 It is easy to make such empty claims, but how many out of all the manufacturers on the planet actually have a deal with CATL? Another interesting question would be how long would it take for a company with no deal with CATL to make a deal, build a battery factory, and then scale production? Still one has to consider... how many automakers have the scale, or are actually using Tesla's new manufacturing techniques to cut costs beyond the battery pack? Because Tesla cars are very efficient and that's why there are plenty of cars with bigger batteries that are still losing to them in terms of range. And that's why Tesla can make EVs profitably. A claim can appear to make sense at first glance, but you should study what it will take to implement it. I'd say Tesla and a few Chinese companies that are already contracted with CATL have about at least a 2 to 3-year advantage compared to the others.

Toyoto has done extensive market research and the big picture shows that populations that are not in the West that need cars simply do not have the infrastructure to adapt to electric cars and it is hard enough to supply electricity even to thousands that do not have it. Plans to solve the problem are not on the short list so it could take years. It is a case of hybrid if possible in the city and gas once you leave it. In short they see no advantage of going all electric too soon. The Electric makers are like the early makers of the first gasoline engine cars. Too many, too underfunded and nothing to distinguish them as special. i would not be surprised in Toyoto ends up with a very good balance sheet for as much as 10 years. As for the West no matter what the brand a new gas powered car will have near zero resale value in as short as 5 years.

Just so that you know (if you didn't already and are, in fact, interested), because Viking didn't mention it: it's a step up in energy density compared to _LFP_ chemistry. LFP is not the most energy dense type of Li-ion battery chemistry (to say the least), but M3P (LMFP) is supposed to combine the benefits of LFP with improved energy density. I don't think this chemistry is bringing energy densities close to NCA territory. So don't expect any range records or performance records to be broken with this chemistry.

Time will tell? The actual numbers vary by business school, but there are some general historical statistics on market share and the number of big global players in mature markets of many different types. There is usually room for about eight players. The leader’s market share % goes down the line in reducing percentages as does the net profit margins, until the margin is insufficient for long term survival. The market leader tends to set the prices and their market share often settles very roughly around the 30% mark. The EV market is still immature so the degree of market dominance might be expected to reduce in time. This is to be anticipated, and in the Tesla case should not be touted as a negative. Tesla’s and BYD’s agility is a strategic competitive edge that the legacy auto makers will need to learn from in order to survive. EV consumers who intend to buy and use their vehicle over a long period, need to think very carefully about purchasing from a likely long term survivor, who can service their vehicle, say 10 years out.

The price of lithium dropping 50% is a bit of a red herring, since the price is still up over 700% since 2011. About 4 month ago CATL reported that they were producing solidstate batteries in their ordinary Lithium NMP production lines. At this time these had about 50% of the energy density of the L-NMP batteries. CATL predicted at the time that they would have gotten the energy density up to par with the L-NMP battery in about a year. And then we start talking. This is important as the more electric cars we see on the street the closer we get to the ban of L-NMP powered vehicles in tunnels, on ferries, in parking buildings, and parked close to other buildings. The insurance companies will refuse to insure these vehicles due to the high risk of fires that easily spreads and are difficult to extinguish. This is why the solidstate battery soon will overtake the L-NMP battery. And you are 100% correct about the other car manufacturers. Look at VW and BMW as two examples. They invest heavily in Northvolt. A company that now asks for additional $8 billon in investments/loans to build more factories. They don't even have one fully functional factory after 5 years and almost 4 years of having a factory up. 90% of all the cells they build is scrapped due to poor quality. I wonder why 🤔 Can it be due to the fact that they buy old technique manufacture machines from Chinese companies and expect these machines to perform world class quality product? Well, the whole management of that company lives by the "Emperors new clothes" mentality. Say "yes sir" even if you know it will lead to disaster. So that company is not even in the race for it. It will be the biggest black hole for investors money in the world.

Let’s see if Tesla do claim a range increase ( the biggest stumbling block).Overall we have seen two ‘new’ types of battery formulations ( Iron and Sodium) that whilst being cheaper have lower ( not higher) energy densities than trad lithium nickel phosphate batteries. Range is going down not up - which is why sales of electric vehicles has been slumping and second hand car prices crashing ( at least over here in the U.K.).Oh and thats also the reason Lithium prices has halved - lack of demand.

Energy efficiency is king, and the electric motor already outcompetes the ICE by a large factor on this. The remaining question is energy density and energy content by weight: In this area fossils fuels have about 12 kWh per kilogram. The CATL M3P battery has an alleged energy density of approx. 240 kWh/kg. That is twenty times as much as fossil fuel! In Germany, one kWh of electric energy costs approx. 0,48 €. One kWh of fossil fuel energy costs between 1,15 to 1,28 €. That is more than double as much! So, electric cars have better efficiency, better energy density AND lower energy cost. I cannot see how the ICE can possibly compete when the costs for electric cars come down, and that seems to be the case.
@hvh377
@hvh377 Жыл бұрын
Where did you get that 12kWh per kg number from? No Li-ion battery has an energy density of 240kWh/kg. You are probably of by a factor 1000 in your calculation. 240Wh/kg or 0.240kWh/kg is probably closer to the mark.

M3P (LMFP) batteries have higher voltage with some manganese/aluminium/zinc replacing some iron (Fe) compared to LFP. There tends to be an inverse relationship with voltage and cycle number. The higher voltage of the LMFP battery will reduce the number of cycles. You may need to charge similar to NMC batteries by charging between 20% and 90% to increase longevity of the battery. So the actual range needs to be adjusted accordingly. LFP batteries can be charged to 100% and expect 4000-6000 cycles before significant degradation.

10-30% range increase is stil WAY to little to get this things to actually be able to do work. we need 3 times the range to get a OK towing range. before that happens we cant go over to EV only sales.

The legacy automakers failed to realise that the transition to us all driving electric is not about batteries (although they are essential) but fundamentally about electric motors being the only thing turning our wheels. Had they grasped that back in 2008 Tesla would not dominate now and might not even exist today. What the legacy lot did was think that until we have enough batteries the ICE must be connected to the wheels. However once you have only electric motors turning the wheels, with each new model or model update, the race is on to give more battery capacity. And that is what Tesla have done because the alternative would have been ice generators or hydrogen fuel cells and they would been competing with legacy auto in a field they already dominate. It would have been evolution, not revolution and the irony is today we would already have far less fossil fuel use.

If a petrol station has 8 pumps, and it take 6 times as long to charge an EV as it does to refill a petrol car, then if every petrol car were to be replaced by an EV the filling station would require 48 charging stations. Even if there was room on the forecourt for these, the cabling to the site would not be capable of supplying the extra power, and even if this were to be upgraded, we would need to build additional nuclear power stations to provide dependable clean electricity. The fact that the Government is ignoring these factors suggests that the object of the exercise is to use the alleged climate change crisis to eliminate private transport for all but the very rich.

@@yourlogicalnightmare1014 You must have missed the sarcasm in my statement. Everybody is taking such ludicrous statements seriously here. It's probably because this area of YT is full of Tesla fanboys who actually believe and write this stuff..... Of course it's bad that cars are constructed this way. Even cars are starting the march of the mass-produced goods. Stuff is more and more optimised for cheap production, less and less for cheap repairs and you end up replacing everything with new when it is broken. Repair has become too expensive. I remember a time when white goods repair was a thing. Now a broken washing machine is instant landfill. Or when VW introduced the separate door skins to ease repairs of small carpark accidents. Tesla is going the other way completely. Not good for the planet at all.

@@hvh377 One thing I've learned from reading thousands of comments about Tesla... people who use the phrase "tesla fanboy" are angry incels who can't afford a tesla and can't afford the stock, so they are left out of the game entirely. They can't have the car, nor can they get rich off the stock. I made $100k in February when I bought a chunk of Tesla after it nosedived from people like you whining about it. So I should thank you for adding to my wealth. Secondly, I couldn't care less about the planet. If humanity cared at all about the planet, it wouldn't be growing more humans at an exponential rate. If Earth had 4 billion fewer people, we could pollute all we want, fly all the private planes we want, burn all the coal we want, and it wouldn't make any difference. It is ONLY a problem because of the absurd number of humans on the planet. Sorry to tell you Electric Viking but every battery technology has a weakness. Often, news reports are too good to be true. In the case of M3P batteries, the potential downside here is cycle life. Experts familiar with the M3P technology are suggesting this chemistry shouldn't be discharged below 10 percent, and then not at incredibly high discharge rates. BYD Blade battery on the other hand does not mind at all 100% charging and 100% discharge....3000 charge/discharge cycles with little degradation from dendrite formation. That is over 700K miles!
