Today in this review sort of reaction, we're talking about this battle manga called Shangri-La Frontier. Episode 1, 2, 3, and 4 are out. But as of writing this, Episode 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 are not. This anime is for all gamers who play video games like Dark Souls or any MMORPG. Watch it.

I really like the proper gaming theme here - our dude reads gaming forums, wiki and so on, even changes games time to time. It's not just plain isekai where the game becomes reality. Here the game is just a game and is played just for fun by some dude :)

except it is. There's no exploration of the mechanics of the game. He could literally be an expert martial artist playing games for the first time and it would have the same effect. If you cut out a few scenes, it would play exactly like a gamified isekai.

@@obarich No, his objective is to kill the Big Bad Wolf Boss (not what it's actually called btw), but the wolf boss only shows up in random encounters, and is way stronger than Sunraku is, so Sunraku's currently just trying to get strong enough to be able to fight it. So it's not like he doesn't _have_ and objective, it's just that the objective isn't one that can be so directly pursued.

Those werewolves in bloodborne are pretty easy, but they require the opposite tactic that the villagers need. Villagers attack in groups so you need to out range them and use wide sweeps or you'll get caught. The werewolves are extremely easy to stagger so you grab a fast weapon like the hunter's saw and attack as quickly as possible to interrupt them.

lol don't kid yourself that it's "underrated". It's got 21k votes and an average of 8 on MAL. If anything, it's a bit overrated. Animations are great, but for a "game" themed show, it's greatly lacking in actually exploring the game direction. Feels like an isekai with just how brute forced everything is.

Highly recommend reading the manga, it doesn't confine itself just to one game but explores other games and genres which is epic, this is comic/anime equivalent of Runescape where you got no real objective you just vibe and go from quest to quest

there IS a story - the unique monsters, but it's just gaming. the only stakes within it are within the game. that, and the devs having to deal with Sunraku & co's shenanigans. but that story is really enough, that and whatever sidequests and diversions Sunraku & friends go on. Like there's an entire arc where him, Pencilgon, and Katzo compete in a televised gaming exhibition match for a superhero fighting game running on the same game engine as SLF. and it has the single best moment in the series to date. that part in the manga is going to take a while for the anime to get to, but given that season 2 was announced and confirmed for this Fall, we'll definitely get there.

As a manga reader who has yet to finish it but am more than half way. The story is honestly really interesting. And well not exactly the story of the anime itself but the game the anime focuses on, but I think that’s the point as the name of the game is literally the title. The story of the anime ig would be the main character trying his best to find all the secrets of shangri la frontier, and I genuinely love it. It reminds me so much of log horizen, SAO, and I think it’s name was gungar… probably wrong on that. It also reminds of gurren lagann my favorite anime. It is a genuinely good manga that i didn’t expect from winter 2023. It takes many great story points from those 4 and uses them greatly. From what I have currently read/watched(btw anime adaptation is fantastic) the series will definitely be in my top 20 maybe top 15. 9.2/10.

Shangri-La Frontier is BY FAR the best anime ever made based on the MMORPG genre (that is not an Isekai like Overlord). The creator clearly knows about these types of games, he has a lot of experience in them, and he was definitely someone that loved PvP and boss raids. As someone that has tens of thousands of hours in MMOs since Lineage back in early 2000s (yeah, I am at mid 30s...), I have never watched any anime capturing the feeling on an MMO so well, and I have watched more than 1500 so far. I was itching to find something to play again, only to remember that MMOs have been garbage for almost a decade now...

Log horizon is more in the trope of "trapped in the game". The stakes are way different, the tone is much more heroic and epic, and the metaplot is very misterious and dark. Log Horizon is much closer to SAO than SLF, but it is also a hundred times better. It would be unfair to compare LH with SLF, IMO. They are both good, in very, very different ways. SLF is way faster and consistent, though. I hope LH gets to its final arch soon, because right now it seems too close to jumping the shark.

My ex would act awkward every time I picked up the sticks so I ended up having to basically play behind her back when she was asleep or at work. I almost felt like I was cheating on my gf with my games. But when I got a gamer wife, the world changed. I will have to check it out- but if you really enjoyed the combination of low stakes and cool action- maybe check out Bofuri- the protagonist is OP, but its done in a comedic way, and once again low stakes, she stumbled into a cheesy build in a new game while trying to avoid getting hurt and keeps finding broken combos and niche powers and equipment, despite the devs trying to balance the game with her in mind. but then she turnes around and turns into a giant ball of wool because she is just having fun playing the game her own way. The fight scenes are cool, but its all a game in the end and everyone remembers that, which is highly refreshing. The way her quirky style inspires others is fun too, its implied in the next season that more players are trying to push the limits like she did and pull of their own nonsense.

I haven’t watched the full video yet, but I really hope you explain how this show is all action and no story. The show absolutely has a story and it’s not all action. The stories about the relationship with the characters so far. I guess it’s more like a slice of life anime were the characters play video games. But to say there’s no emphasis on Storie is just not true. The story is him playing a game that has all kinds of crazy possibilities because it’s a god tier video game. And it’s also about the girl that likes him that’s trying to find him and game and confess to him. Yes there’s a lot of action in the show for sure and the animation is awesome. But the show would just be another basic anime if it was solely about action. Edit: I watch till the end. I assume when you say it doesn’t have any story, you mean that the story isn’t groundbreaking? I know this is KZbin so you have to have catchy titles. But no matter how long I am on this website, it is still going to frustrate me when I see people using misleading titles like that. This show doesn’t not care about Story. It just doesn’t have a story with super high stakes. But that doesn’t mean it’s a show that doesn’t care about Storie at all. I don’t know.
