😢 That wasn't an art teacher. That was an imposter with judgemental preferences who didn't understand the first thing about the very essence and soul of art. There is no WRONG style of art. It is important to learn ALL styles of art but if you're going give an assignment in freestyle, it should be judged on the style that the piece was done in, not on the personal preferences of the teachers. If the assignment is on a specific type of art then the piece should be graded on that piece but explain what in the piece what style it was and what the difference between the style you were supposed to do vs the one you did and let the student know what they did RIGHT and ask if they need help doing whatever parts weren't right in the style that was asked for, AND tell them if the things they did in the incorrect style were done well or not and if they were, compliment them and ask them to remember it for a future assignment and if not offer CONSTRUCTIVE corrections to help them gain strength in that area as well in the future. @claracatlady98447 ай бұрын
@@kamilledeas6890 well at least my teachers (or German education in general) didn’t expect you to go into art as a career path anyways, therefore it didn’t matter “what sells”. I did the equivalent of Art A-level and the topic of “How to apply to art university?” Or “how to make a portfolio?” Didn’t come up even once. It was always treated like either 1. A fun little hobby you have, or more infuriatingly 2. The A-level that people without actual skill in anything chose to get an easy A, despite art probably being one of the most intense and time consuming A-levels. I failed so hard when I first applied to University and I can totally see why now but back then I didn’t understand, I was crushed and I had no idea how to improve. I ended up taking a sort of forced gap year (I graduated 2020 so yeah) and I ended up spending a lot of money on 3 separate university online short courses covering the most relevant subjects of my course and through that taught myself how to put together a portfolio, as well as generated stuff to actually put in the portfolio since pretty much everything from my A-level school work was useless (you don’t ever really do development or research work in German art class, it’s all final pieces and art history/analysis, which makes it unusable for any kind of university portfolio). I did get into my desired course and am very happy but I can confidently say that I would have never made it if I/my parents didn’t have and weren’t willing to invest that money in those online courses and that really bothers me, because the German education system prides itself on being high quality while remaining free for everyone. It’s sad to think that talent gets discouraged and people don’t end up following their passion simply because they don’t know how and have logistically speaking no chance against ex. British, Chinese, Japanese, Indian students in the application process because those students have been thoroughly prepared on how to make a successful portfolio and an application. I was so shocked how much more my friends or classmates had been prepared for this when they told me about their school experience. I think the German education system is great in a lot of ways but it really is lacking in the creative department. Art isn’t valued. A pretty glaring example for this is that in the entire “German Scholarship Registry” (a database where every scholarship you can apply for both private, government or company funded is listed) there are *none* for Art/Design and Music. Like actually *none.* The only one I saw was for “If you already study art at a German university you can get a scholarship for spending a semester abroad at another university” that’s it.

You can't break the rules if you didn't understand them Anime and cartoon are simplifications of reality All artists should learn how the real world works before learning anything else
@bortortart7 ай бұрын
Not always. I mean this light-heartedly but that’s not necessarily true, you can learn them hand-in-hand, they’re separate skills that feed off each other/overlap. You don’t have to master fundamentals to play with stylization, nothing wrong with working on both interchangeably- I always found that kept me much more motivated.
@upstairssky27517 ай бұрын
I've heard that one a lot of times and i do partially agree that practicing different styles can really improve your skills, but i've been drawing very styalized art ever since i was a kid and it just kinda made me good at realism too. If you don't want to work in a field where drawing realism is required, then i don't think you're required to learn it. 🤷♀️🤷♀️

@@1kayo I get what you’re saying, but that’s essentially my point. You use anatomy skills learned from realism studies, but that doesn’t mean you HAVE to do that before doing anything else, and I’m sure you don’t feel like you have a perfect grasp on all the art fundamentals yet. You can technically learn very basic anatomy without stepping into realism. What I mean is art is a complex process, and what works for one artist may not work for another, including generalizations. Some teachers will insist it’s essential to learn all the fundamentals first, others don’t think that at all. Again, not trying to start a fight, just explaining what I mean. This video isn’t meant to be literally taken as hating realism either, it’s a satire on the way art teachers treat students who want to draw anime art

It's not a must you can draw perfect cartoon and anime figures without ever doing realistic drawings I always found it so boring to just draw people the same way they look in real life..just take a picture if you want it to look the same I've only learned to draw realistically five years after starting my job so I could shut people's mouth when they say "you just can't do real art🤡"
@1kayo7 ай бұрын
@@Kushirosan real world rules = prospective + how light works in different surfaces + how clothes bend + Golden ratio + color theory + shape language + anatomy..etc etc ... I didn't say draw real people but understand real world rules Those are art basics ... I draw stylized anime

As an artist I understand the value of realism alot now and let me tell you this. You can't draw good anime styles if you didn't understand how to draw realistically. And it's not simple as that, you have to understand how a realistic human looks like and how they functioning in order to make it look good in anime. For example just understanding the simple steps of drawing an eye wouldn't be helpful. You need to understand the eye in three dimensions, understand the muscles that surround the eye and how they sit, understand how to simplify the eye structure so you can replicate that as many times as you want. And how the eye sits in the face/skull and how it'll look in perspective from different angles. That is true to every other body part in the body. Studying realism helps you with that so you can make that anime artstyle look really good. That being said if you're a beginner focus on the fundamentals so you don't have to relearn them later down the road like I have to now.

I had a art teacher like this, but the opposite. She started the year off by saying any and all cartoons would recieve an F & black paint wasn't allowed. She even went as far to say that anime/cartoon style art doesn't make money in the real world. I had to drop the course after that bc I couldn't take her seriously. Crazy part is that she wasn't a good realism artist herself... all she had was the college credentials to become a teacher. I swiched to photography & ceramics. & I still do anime/cartoon, but now I get comissioned to do it for ppl.
