The Beatles didn't see color.. they saw *people*. It doesn't surprise me at all that they refused to play to segregated audiences..especially when you know that many of their musical heros and influences were artists like Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Smokey Robinson. They even covered Chuck and Smokey's tunes and met Fats early in their career. I remember reading how excited John was to meet him backstage when he toured the UK. It's a terrible shame that their going against the grain (so to speak) would even upset "most Americans" per Larry Kane. What is upsetting is that segregation happened at all.
@comanchio19765 жыл бұрын
FabFour Fever They even met little Richard a few times in Hamburg, and is where they got their trademark "Oooo" from their early records. Also, when John Lennon was asked what his musical ambition would be, he said that it would be to play guitar like BB King. So their reaction to segregation was almost inevitable - given all of the aforementioned.

Ben E. King has praised The Beatles for giving him more money from their cover of "Stand By Me" than he ever had received (including from his own original recording). They knew talent and did not see the color behind it, which made their music break barriers.
@reimourrpower93574 жыл бұрын
The Beatles knew talent & respected it. I doubt they were as blissfully ignorant "not see the color behind it"; in fact they were acknowledging the disrespected and enormously skilled Black artists that inspired them.

Acknowledge the bias, like the Beatles did, do something about it as they did too. They were not activists, they just did the right thing that time. Give them their props and stop being 'blind'.

You need to understand that post war England was full of refugees from all over the Commonwealth. We were born, grew up with, played and went to school with people from all over the world. In the north of England we had a heritage of supporting Lincoln during the American civil war. Segregation and racism was something we had to learn outside the home and outside of where we came from. Our friends and neighbours were of all colours but we just couldn't see a difference in skin colour.

The Beatles idolized black rock n roll, blues, rnb and soul artistes and their music, they started out doing mostly covers of black artistes, opened for visiting black artistes in their early career, and had black artistes open for them when they hit it big.
