Let’s take the opportunity now that “I’m Still Here” is gaining attention to inform people outside Brazil about the connection between the former president Jair Bolsonaro and this story. Bolsonaro harbored deep hatred for the real-life Rubens Paiva, a congressman who was brutally tortured and killed during the military dictatorship-a fact Bolsonaro has consistently denied, falsely claiming Paiva wasn’t murdered by the regime. In the film, Fernanda Torres portrays the real-life wife of Rubens Paiva, whose tragic story is intertwined with the horrors of the dictatorship Bolsonaro openly admires. Bolsonaro’s hostility toward Paiva and his family reflects his broader admiration for the military regime that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985. He is a staunch defender of that era and has repeatedly praised its legacy. During a vote to impeach former president Dilma Rousseff-a survivor of the dictatorship's brutal practices-Bolsonaro paid tribute to Alberto Ustra, a military officer notorious for orchestrating torture and deaths during that time. Ustra was directly involved in Rousseff’s torture. Bolsonaro genuinely believes the dictatorship was a “revolution” rather than a dictatorship, aligning himself with its legacy in both rhetoric and ideology.

Bia, I want to share this youtube video on my facebook page and I thought your words are so accurate and meaningful. Can I copy your text and post it, giving credts of course? I’m a Japanese descendent who grew up in São Paulo, and I have too many (in a very negative way) family members and Japanese descendant friends that sitll say that the dictatoship was the best thing that happened in Brazil, and they voted (and will vote again) to Bolsonaro. It is disheartening to see the huge support Boslsonaro has from the Brazilian-Japanese community.

Eu estudei, entedo nossa história e digo: NUNCA. MAIS.

@matheusp572 That is not my point. My point is that, first and formost, they did and still do pay for corruption and violance in foreign governments worldwide. And this is very relevant to everybody, not only for us to be able to understand History, but also for us to undersand the present, as their foreign politics is still a problem right now, specialy to the global south, 'cause their ways of doing foreign politics by financing corruption and war worldwide has not changed. Other than that it is a very relevant information to add, as the title of the video seem to use a very common tone when talking about the countries in the global south, that is that they (we) lack something, either it be the capacity to rule and organize themselves as a society or moral principles to do it. Either way, it is akin to biological racism, that treat other cultures and peoples as "the strangers", the strange other, in the same line of thought that thinks "the savages" or the "unfathomable east". In other words, it implies prejudice.

@matheusp572
@matheusp572 25 күн бұрын
@ it’s wasn’t, the Brazilian military and economic elites also wanted the coup, you can see photos of people on demonstration with signs asking for “military intervention”. Of course the US had a significant part on it, and it likely wouldn’t have happened without their support, but don’t act like Brazil had no agency whatsoever. You need a confluence of factors for that kind of thing to happen, not just the wishes of a foreign power. And to be clear, I’m not defending any of the people who were pro coup or are trying to whitewash the dictatorship crimes. I just think this kind of thinking is simplistic and leads to complacency. A country don’t need foreign influence to destroy it’s democracy, just look at could’ve happened in 2022, the military was even plotting to kill the elected president and supreme court minister, and they did all of that by themselves.

in fact it was not just a government, but a military dictatorship established in the '64 coup with the support of the USA. More than 20,000 people were murdered by the military and more than 200, including Rubens Paiva (the father of the family represented in this film) never had their bodies found and buried, Rubens' death certificate, in fact, is only symbolic, we never knew what the military did to him during his arrest or after his death.

My uncle passed the tests and became a federal police during the dictatorship (is the Brazilian equivalent of F.B.I.) My family is from rural northeast, they grew up poor. He was an attorney when he passed. These tests are really really hard, it was, and still is, a prestigious job, and pays really well. He was in his early twenties when he started the job, and he was forced to work in the "burning archives", back then, people went missing from nothing, some people went to work, or buy groceries, and never came back. If someone was suspect of anything, from protesting to just criticize the dictatorship, the government would kidnap, torture, and most of the times even murder. The bodies, documents, all the traces where completely erased by the government, even after the dictatorship, and to this day, no one know what happened to most of the victims. Families never had a chance to known what happened to their loved ones, or even make a proper burial, some of then still hopes do find the ones they lost. After the dictatorship ended, my uncle came back completely destroyed physically, mentally, and addicted to drinking. He never worked again, and since then, he spent all day, everyday, locked in his room, drinking, playing guitar, and crying. He drinks until colapse, most of the time on the floor, just to wake the next day and repeat the process. He never told anyone what he was forced to do, even his siblings, wife and kids.

@@miooj Well the political ideology known as "Liberalism" (which is defended by the democratic party and it's supporters in the USA) is a right wing ideology. It is in it's essence an extremely capitalist economical and social school of thought. The military coup and dictatorship in Brazil (and in many other latin american countries during that time) were directly supported and funded by the US government - this isn't a conspiracy or a secret, it's a widely available information. In fact the US president at the time it all started was Lyndon Johnson, a democrat. I am not from the US (I'm brazilian), but - at least from a far - it seems that a lot of US Americans have a very shallow understanding of certain political concepts. From what I have seen and consumed from the country I feel like a lot of people "confuse" leftist and liberal ideas (which is ironic, because they are, in their core, completely opposing). It kinda boils down to the fact that the US has no concrete (or at least "mainstream") leftist movements or parties. Probably do to the many government efforts of repressing them, especially during the cold war. I mean, do remember that I am a foreigner who is not involved in the US social moviment scene - so the left may be stronger than I think idk. But as a brazilian, the only left leaning US american references I have are Malcolm X and the Black Panthers. To foreigners the majority of the US seems to be quite alienated, even the ones who do try to engage with politics (but are not envolved directly or scholars of it) seem to lack awearness of the meaning and history of political ideologies; movements and of most of the US's foreing actions and policies, to an almost funny (if it wasn't sad) degree. I think it´s kind of what the first comment meant or at least what I interpreted from it :) Idk if you are from the US and I don't mean any of it as an "attack" hahah it's not exactly a criticism either, I do belive that US Americans are purposefully "kept in the dark" and/or not incentivated to be and think politically for a reason. In Brazil it's seen as very bad and selfish to say things like "I'm apolitical" or "I don't do politics", but that seems to be the general attitude in the US and that is, more than anything, terrifying.

It's like Fernanda Torres said, we were living a phase full of energy and creativity in Brazil, in culture, art, education with innovative pedagogical projects and, suddenly, everything was truncated in a frightening way, from which we never recovered, but it is under this reality, and knowing that effervescence is part of us, that we will rebuild ourselves. As it has been said since then, 'down with the dictatorship, torture never again'. We recently went through events that reminded us of those times, when part of the population, the military and politicians did not accept the electoral defeat in 2022. The past is more present than we would like, but 'não passarão'.

The film is already a winner, the Oscar award would be just protocol. In fact, the Oscar is not a parameter of film quality, it is an industry and not art.

I was born in Brazil during those tough, oppressive times-so yeah, I’m older than the democratic Statehood of my country, which is just crazy to think about. Without a doubt, I wish my fellow Americans would find a theater showing this movie. It’s a hard and cruel portrait of our childhoods, giving a stark and real illustration of what it was like to live in a country gripped by the 'enemy within' rhetoric. It hits close to home.

About voices, I guess Selton is in the top 3 most recognizable voices of Brasil. And accents... 😂😂😂 Among everything he does, he is a famous voice actor too. He is our Daniel San, he and his brother, and he is our Kusco. Just to name some of his work. So... Selton is a staple here in Brasil. I don't know a person who don't love him... So, at least for me, when I heard he was on the movie, I knew I wouldn't see Rubens Paiva. And that's fine. What we get from Selton when he is on is rich, full of life and detail... And he sells any idea... He does it all, comedy and drama, with the same care. That said... Fernanda... We're used to seeing her with witty funny and intelligent scripts. She has this fast thinking and a way of reacting to stuff on scene that is amusing, cool and soooo relatable. Seeing her in drama reminds us she can be subtle and smooth and still makes us feel something. Amazong actress. This movie is a treat...

Watch I'm Still Here!! The film has the ability to show in a sensible and delicate way a dark period of the dictatorial regime imposed at the time.

Some acting works are in another level, and the language barrier can be overlaped if you are considering just the acting, and that's why Fernanda Torres deseves all awards this year, but are the voters open to consider this and overlap the language barrier?

15:20 that is just what I thought when I watched the movie, the acting in this film doesn't feel like acting at all, it's really almost a documentary and I love that. Something that really pisses me is that culture of cinema point of view (kinda like mexico beeing yellow) and expositive dialogues (those dialogues that are useless for the people in the movie, that serves just to explain things to the spectators like a child) which this film had none
