Strands of Makkan Surahs Signs of Allah Prophetic history Judgement day Fall of nations Comforting the prophet( a constant strand) Basis of Spiritual morality The revelation itself( the angels who deliver it, whose recieving it) Surah Najm belong to surahs between 50 n 56 which all are Makkan surahs. They all are built on each other. 1st section of Surah Najm: We’ll deal with What makes Quran so majestic. Allah uses the example of star as a stepping stone to describe something which of of more importance spiritually. It was revealed in 5th year of prophethood. So it was early part of Makkan aggression. They used to start making noise to avoid listening to Quran. But when prophet started reciting this surah everyone started listening to it. The Prophet SAW fell into prostration after his recital and all of muslims and disbelievers fell into prostration with him. Later on they had to come up with solution for they did sajdah. They started telling we didn’t do sajdah and said Prophet mentioned their Gods and did a compromise with us that’s why we did Sajdah and came up with their own made-up ayahs about intercession. Ayah 1: I swear by the star as it falls. Star= Quran Najama: something in instalments. And Quran is also sent down in instalments. The word hawa: rising and falling both. Because in ancient Arabia, the constellation of stars rise from one dimension and fall to the other throughout the year.it used to tell them about the seasons. It was Allah’s way of telling them to prepare themselves for the upcoming season of afterlife as they prepare themselves for upcoming seasons by watching the stars. Allah linked the spiritual idea of revelation and afterlife with the ongoing cultural phenomenon.

Studying of the stars also increased after the advent of Islam. Especially when Islam spread, Muslims became really significant astronomers…because of the need to determine the qibla direction. Years ago I read a book in which western astronomers discussed how they used the Muslim’s study of the stars to further their understanding of the night sky.

The stars cluster الثرياء Pleiades closer to Orion and Taurus clusters is a part of the navigation system, used by travelers, even today. Surely, older civilizations had their stories built around real or fabricated. Arabs also knew the zodiac signs well and used them as their navigational aids. Another explanation by Abdallah in Abbass elaborated it as the unfolding of the Qur'an gradually or in installments.
