To begin, I'm 65... After a lifetime of eschewing slide, I decided to learn some slide/open tuning songs. Levee came first to mind, and it's so easy to 'cheat' and learn from those here on YT. The problem was the broad variances of approaches the YT instructors employed. Very many of them play everything, verses and all, with the slide, and my ears told me that is not correct. It was actually your Zepparella video performance I used for instruction. Ironic that you don't play it in open tuning normally, but I get it. I'm playing a Danelectro 12-string for the song, with the signal split to a dirty and clean amp, and a bit of chorus thrown in for good measure. What a pleasure to find you here instructing that very song. I read your father for many years, it's great to see the next Menn generation's contribution to the art. Cheers! John

Hey, John! Yes, there are SO many ways to play this, and I'm VERY flattered if I was one of the people you consulted when going on your Levee journey. I'd love to hear your rendition! I'm always learning and hearing things better as I grow as a musician. And doing this series is encouraging me to dive deeper. My goal is to share GOOD information, and, as the daughter of a journalist, I really try to keep skeptical, check my sources, and use my ears. How cool you read my dad's stuff! I'll tell him that! :-)

This is the first song that I have heard by you band all thoughs few years ago. Was blown away by it, and still am! Opened tuning is scary to me, because if I want to wander off into the cosmos on a solo, I find it almost inevitable to get lost. But with standard tuning, I'm all good. I have loved all things Zeppelin since High School and my very first guitar over 50 Years ago. My first guitar mentor was a Delta Blues Man. He played all the classics the old way as they were put down on the recordings. I learned to finger pick right up front. Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Lemon, Bessie Smith, Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters along with Robert Johnson took me for many walks down dark country roads. When I found Zeppelin, The Stones and Clapton I knew I was home. Folks Ms. Menn get it, she feels the chords and the notes in her soul and makes them her very own. She is a very respectable player in her own right, I don't know if she has ever sat down with Mr. Page and traded Riffs but I do believe she would make him proud very much so.
@DavidSmith-ss1cg

Great job on this video, Gretchen! Thanks for your thoughtful break-down of the different riffs and tuning variations. I can remember trying to learn "Levee" in F#m from the vinyl record, and finally giving up. I knew that Pagey wouldn't have made it all that difficult to play! As soon as I saw the third part, that you call a bridge, the light bulb came on over my head! I'm so glad to have found your instruction videos. I think that all young players should learn the Zeppelin core catalog; they set the standard for rock guitar as we know it today. I remember what a big splash Zeppelin made when they first started out. After the Beatles movie, everyone wanted to play guitar and be in a band. There was lots of different types of rock music, and some was pretty weird. But Zeppelin raised the bar, so to speak, that standard for competence, that many groups had(or had gotten away with) for playing. I can remember seeing Jimi Hendrix on a TV talk show, saying he didn't get Led Zeppelin(he did say that he liked the guitar player for the Burrito Brothers). I think that he meant that Jimmy Page thought like a producer, when coming up with songs like "Ramble On" and "Good Times, Bad Times," and the "light and shade" were part of the design of the song. Anyway, great job, and keep up the good work! Thanks again.

Kudos , Gretchen! I love your instructional method and the assignment is a great reinforcement for mastering the open tuning.
