Martin McDonagh's Banshees of Inisherin was dark... really dark... But does dark comedy have a therapeutic power?

Great video and great channel, man! I've been binge watching your videos in the last day or so. I agree with your analysis of the film, I think you're spot on on so many things. I would just like to add one thing: in the scene where Siobhan is standing watching the lake, maybe she's contemplating suicide, not literal suicide, but a form of spiritual suicide - staying on Inisherin would be that for her. And maybe it's Dominic who actually "saves" her from that, from those thoughts, pushing her to leave. Dominic, for me, is a kind of angel-like figure, the opposite of a banshee, and it's all the more sad that Siobhan is the one who pushes him away, being the final drop that pushed him to suicide. I don't know, I'm just rambling.

Yeah I think that's a good interpretation, staying on the island is a form of death. It echos what I said about Colm that cutting himself off from Padraic was a form of suicide. The more isolated, insular or self-obsessed we become the closer we get to a metaphorical death. Yeah Dominic is an angelic figure, it wasn't his fault that he became isolated. Thanks for commenting! I'm so happy to finally get some feedback on this video which was my first. Thanks for sticking with it I know it's overly long and slow :)

@@TheCinemaDetective oh, I don't think it was overly long or slow. It was just right.

I was on the right track in some ways, but there are more themes than I picked up on that you hit upon. Understanding the hints laid out including lyrics and meanings of song choices are sometimes hidden clues that unravel a mystery, and this video expounds upon those ideas. Great job.

had to run the whole channel back after finding your recent video on the substance, amazing stuff man

It's always nice when someone goes back and leaves a comment on this video. It was the first one I created. I rewatched it today. It's interesting how much the themes I talked about here, isolation and self-destruction, are sort of related to what I talked about for The Substance! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thank you for these excellent analyses - I have subscribed. With the exception of Dream Scenario I’ve seen all the films you’ve investigated and your thoughts about then have greatly enhanced my enjoyment of them. I didn’t particularly enjoy Saltburn or Maestro when I watched them as I couldn’t engage with any of the characters. I did admire the skill of the film-making though and your analyses have certainly made me appreciate them more. I always knew that there was more to Banshees than the civil war allegory and your video has helped crystallise some of the amorphous thoughts I had about it and provided much new food for thought. It’s notable I think that the acts of self-harm Colm perpetrates on himself eventually directly harm Padraic by killing his donkey and now, having seen your video, that’s kind of mirrored in Siobhan’s potential act of self-harm (suicide) acting as the tipping point for Dominic’s successful attempt. What we think might be personal decisions that will only affect ourselves actually have wider ramifications and impact others. Thanks again for providing such great insights. I look forward to your next video.

Oh it's so cool you've been going through watching them all! I've tried to avoid giving too much of my opinion on the quality of the movies, I don't see the job of an explainer video to be telling anyone if it was a good movie or not since they've already seen it and have their own opinion. But it might seem like since I'm doing a deep dive into a movie I must have thought it was amazing. When I make the videos I end up watching the film 3 or 4 times as well as viewing individual scenes many times when editing. What I'm finding is that my appreciation for the all the films grows the more time I spend with them and study them. I suppose because I've set myself the task of finding meaning I'm forcing myself to connect with it in a deeper way, Saltburn definitely didn't impress me much on the first viewing and Maestro had some beautiful cinematography but was confusing. Anatomy of a Fall had me yawning and I wanted it to hurry up and end, but now I love it. A good film shouldn't need an explainer video to be enjoyable, and maybe like jokes if they need to be explained they're not great, but we tend to only give movies one chance to impress, whereas something like a song we expect and allow it to grow on us over time. So I'm learning to enjoy cinema in a new way because of starting this channel. The only films I've done that I loved on the first watch were The Holdovers, Dream Scenario, and Banshees of Inisherin, and they also got better with rewatching. This video was the first one I made and hopefully I've improved a bit since. I think if there's a war allegory it's the war within ourselves between individualism and collectivism, and it's not that one is right and the other wrong. Colm is right that art and music is a great thing, and Padraic could benefit from standing up for himself a bit more, but we always need to balance those personal decisions because of the the wider ramifications and impact on others like you say. Thanks for watching and be sure to drop a comment on Dream Scenario if you get around to watching it!

Whether a film is “good” or “bad” is an entirely subjective decision and therefore has no real meaning so I absolutely agree with your approach of “explaining” which, as I’ve said, has actually made me appreciate those two films I mentioned a lot more. I did quite a few film courses back in the day and since then I know that whenever I’m watching something now I’m subconsciously analysing it and the films I enjoy the most are the ones that have me thinking about them long after I’ve viewed them. And no, films don’t need to be explained to be enjoyable but personally I find it enhances the experience and makes me even more in awe of the skills of everyone involved in making them. So thanks again for taking the time to dive so deeply. (I loved Anatomy of a Fall when I saw it by the way and I think your videos on it are excellent.)@@TheCinemaDetective

How are you animating the captions, any plugins? that must take a lot of time.
@TheCinemaDetective3 ай бұрын
For that video I was using the Final Cut Pro app for the ipad. It has a feature where you can just use the apple pencil to write on top of the video. So the animation really didn't take long but using the ipad app was slow for all the other editing so I no longer use it. You think it added something or not really worth it?
