Paul, the same thing happened to my wife. I was back in the states and we decided to for her to go over on a fiancee visa. She put the paper work together(very efficient woman) and when she had her physical a spot was found on her lung. She had to go back to manila every week for two months to be tested. She finally cleared and flew over. Towards the end of the 90 days we married and were in the process of putting the paper work together for my visa and making flight reservations when covid hit, this was 2019. Finally by September 2021 we left the states for the Philippines. The flight here is another story.

Paul, this was a great interview, and a public service announcement with an honest Filipina, and what she observed while living in the US for 5 years. Like she said, she prefers the Philippines, over the US, but depending on other Filipina perspective in life, it can be what they want. I knew that she would get the grandpas treatment, and that is a shame. You are so right that the Filipina look much younger than they truly are. They are lucky, and us expats the end up with them , are better for it. You are looking much younger now, than in earlier videos, and that may be the lifestyle changes, for yourself, but feel Mae could have something to don with that also. Thanks again😉

Well done Paul. The young lady was charming, intelligent and quite funny. My Indonesian wife loved our trips to the US, mainly because she knew we were only going to stay for the holiday visits with my family. But, we did have a major trip to show her the major locations of the US. She was happy to have seen them, recorded it for showing her friends and family, including the snow. But, no way we will leave our beautiful home in Jakarta. Happy, retired and loving my family in Indonesia!

I agree about the snow. I hate living somewhere that gets so cold that it can kill me. The dry air in winter definitely causes bloody nose. For me it makes my skin so dry that my knuckles split open just using them normally Philippina's seem so incredibly pleasant to be around. Id really like to visit one day, hopefully i can go there before i retire, maybe in a couple years

Dog: this video really hits home. Been married 33yrs to my Filipina wife. we lived in Cebu for yrs, moved back and now considering going back for good as I am 78ys.. The interview with the young lady reminds me of my processing in Manila. Just look at all the BS paperwork one still goes thru when the US welcomes millions to just walk across our border. I'll get off that soap box. The words of the young lady really confirmed my & my wifes feelings about living in US or PI. Here in US we chase the USD and life is full of stress. Even more so now with inflation & a weak liberal government. So we may give up some conveniences, but have decided it is time to leave the US. Kudos to the young lady. Agreed, BS paperworks compared to millions just walk across the border. I've been through the same thing 36 yrs ago. I didn't have TB but the process was stressful. Now I'm working on moving back to the Philippines for good. I never get used to the long winter and very short summer. I love America and there are things I will miss.

Great interview, My Filipino wife and I did the 90 day visa, to USA, and lived mostly in USA for 12 years, my wife loved the snow and had no problem with the cold weather, a couple years ago we built a home on Poro Island, Cebu, and spend 1/2 year here, (wife loves the food, me not so much), there is good and bad in both countries, big age difference, we found that the women would try and get my wife to not be happy with me, she is young, pretty and smart, mainly the older women were upset with us as a couple. We wish we could live in both countries all the time! USA+ the high quality of life, +Philippines THE PEOPLE. (of course negitives in both countries) 😊Rick

Took my wife 3 years 8 months to get my wife here. The process is not for the faint of heart. Beware Passport Guys/ Bros. It can be a expensive process. edit. Now 9 years later she's a citizen working as BSN-RN and was able to petition her Mother who arrived 3 months ago. Also built a house in Davao. Here in L.A. and Vegas there's a large Filipino community, so they are comfortable .

America 🇺🇸 is the best place to live when you're young and energetic but not when you're OLD. Staying in Florida is just like the Phil with regards to the weather and the pace is not as bad as up North. If you earn well you'll be comfortable living here with all the amenities . She said they live in the countryside so there's nothing there probably. As someone mentioned America is not for everyone and I still feel blessed that I've live here for 30 yrs. No complaints

@@33afterM Yes, that sentiment applies everywhere in general. The difference is that, I think, in Asian countries like the Philippines they are very tight-knit families often living together as (very!) large, extended families and they look out for each other. It's a "collective" support system, whereas, in the US, it's mostly the individual esp. if you moved here like in this case as a fiance/spouse, pretty much a two-member household where you really feel the sting of it, I think that's what Lizel is talking about.

I had a friend in the same situation. He decided to take his fiancee' to another doctor (but still affiliated with St. Lukes's) for an second diagnosis. The second doctor said his fiancee' did not have TB. The second doctor did a chest x-ray and a second PPD. Both neg. St. Lukes's refused to accept the second diagnosis. His fiancee' had to suffer through 6 months of this torture. She finally arrive in the US. Both were happy.

@@jjohnsengraciesmom The whole PH medical exam procedures should be revamped, IMHO. First, the only place to get the Medical is St. Luke's. There needs to be other facilities available in different parts of the PH. Second, if a TB diagnosis is shown to be wrong, then there should be some form of appeal. I'm not sure, but I'm betting either the misdiagnosis of TB is on purpose *for some financial gain* or their testing procedures are flawed. There are false + for TB. As far as suing, I'm not sure if it is possible. I worked in the medical field and we were required to have a PPD every year. Some of my co-workers would test + everytime even though the chest x-ray was -. The PPD can have false +. Seems St. Lukes's does not understand this or does not care. I've considered St. Lukes uses this as a "See, we're catching all these TB applicants...aren't we doing good, USCIS?"

@@jjohnsengraciesmom Judy, you are asking about suing an organizational structure set up to allow Filipinos to come into the US. Think that over carefully and what would the repercussions be. Can a couple sue a specific doctor in the Philippines who's working in conjunction with the US govt at St. Lukes, who does all the medical screening for allowing people to stay in the US? My first answer would be no, you cannot. And then I get to, would you WANT to? And once again I get to, no you would not. And the third point would be, did a false diagnosis cause REAL physical harm to the person undergoing the treatment, and once again I get to, most likely not. Was it a pain in the ASS? CERTAINLY. Did it add to that couple's expense? CERTAINLY. Do you want to sue for compensation when the US govt would just make the process more expensive if they have to deal with a lot of lawsuits? Or, they make it much harder to deal with medical screenings? Sometimes it's best to deal with the hassles and accept it, rather than fighting a case where the outcome is hundreds of thousands to a few million people have a much harder time because of the outcome of that lawsuit. And I would say the same thing is true in the US where too many states allow outlandish awards for lawsuits, mostly against business. Who is REALLY going to get punished depending on the outcome of that lawsuit? Typically it's consumers. Now, SHOULD St. Lukes allow for a 2nd opinion to be considered over the doctors working directly with them? That's a tough question to answer. I would say sure, as the expense of the couple seeking the 2nd opinion because I'm not going to bash the doctors at St. Lukes because I think just like anywhere in the world they do the best they can and aren't looking to torture people. My wife had to go through that process and it was quick and easy, as it is for almost all Filipinos working through that system. If I remember it was two days, one where she had a bunch of testing and bloodwork done AND getting vaccines to be up to date on what the US requires, and the 2nd day to get the results of everything and given her medical clearance.

@@RonKris My only problem with everything you said is "Seems St. Lukes's does not understand this or does not care." I don't see the justification in making that statement. I think St. Lukes has to trust the people who work with them to make many hundreds of thousands of diagnosis every year. I think allowing 2nd opinions in sets up a situation to where the whole medical process gets more expensive and more time consuming, and the whole thing of lawsuits would open up that whole process of getting very expensive. I think in general these doctors do the job they're trained to do, I don't think anything is done out of ill will, and it has to run as efficiently as possible as all medical systems have to around the world. And at the end of the day, a 2nd opinion is still a 2nd opinion from a person who isn't being paid to do that job of screening people to get a VISA to live in the US, so it gets to whose opinion are you going to take. And the only good way I see around that one is to give all the results to another doctor at St. Lukes who is responsible for these screenings, and let them decide if St. Lukes is going to validate that 2nd opinion. As far as the process of allowing people into the US, that's the business of the PH and the U.S. If they want to take on the expense of allowing another embassy to do processing, that's fine and if they do that it should be from central or southern PH, but I don't think I would agree with changing how they run that process, part of which is a political process.

No, sue for changing the system, not compensation.' Do you believe you'd have the same opinions if your now wife had to endure the 6 months of torture? This treatment is not always without consequences. My friend said she suffered daily during the treatment due to her body's reaction to the Rx. Additionally, she now has elevated liver enzymes and has since (she believes from the Rx for TB given at St. Luke's). Her PCP has told her it is possible, but no base bloodwork to prove or disprove. Regardless, I believe this is more needless suffering (not just the treatments but also travel and other unnecessary expenses).

I came to the US as a professional nurse in the late 70's. Met my husband here. He worked in the business world so my neighbor saw him in business attire everyday. One time she must have seen me working outside. She had the nerve to ask my husband where he hired his Japanese gardener (that was me). He told her that i am his wife . He was so mad but i found it funny. It is ignorance that the woman asked that. Sometimes people are not exposed to different cultures and some assume that because we look different they form assumptions.Some also assumed that i met my husband in the military back to my old country. I just smile at them.

The misperception of age works both ways: I'm a 71 year old white man, but when I went to the cashier reserved for seniors at McDonalds, a couple of years ago in Cebu, no one would come to take my order. My Filipino friends were amused by the reaction of the employees who could not believe I was over 65. Not only Filipino friends, but even here in Ireland, people who know me think I'm joking when I say I'm over 70.

I was about 50 when my dad died and it was a major blow but it would have been much worse if I had only been 20.

Paul, Thank you for such a beautiful and charming guest. I have had several TB patients over the years. You may not know, but there were over 8000 cases in the U.S. last year and the incidence is (by some experts) expected to climb from the current ~2.7 / 100,000 to as high as 3.1/ 100,000 because of the massive influx of impoverished people flooding across our southern border. Another concern is the proliferation of drug resistant strains of TB that are becoming harder and harder to treat. I have a college educated wife from caloocan educated in fillipeans, sister a pediatrician other a banker. she works in silicon valley as a bean counter.. education makes a big difference..Boogie my buddy stated as i talked with a person in manilla. peter your talking to a fence post.. That can and will grow old.. One needs to have a conversation other then sex.. with a person that understads things.. but has full fillipina standards.. thats a winning combo..

It depends where you live in the USA as to what it’s like. Some areas have many Filipinos in them as well as Filipino stores. America is a such a large country that you can probably find any climate that suits you . The cost of living is cheaper in some areas than others. The health care is better in the USA, if you can afford it.

In the philippines I go around our local town with my daughter and we always get comments like, they are a beautiful couple or they will have beautiful children together. It makes me smile and my daughter seems okay with it too. Then we both took my grand daughter around and people said what a beautiful child you have. Sometimes people want pictures of us. We are celebrities. My daughter looks foreign, I have blue eyes and my grand daughter is my sons child and she beautiful. We have never had comments saying Is that your father or grandpa or at least not heard such comments. So there can be positives. We live in the province so maybe different there to the cities.

Chalk up another great video, Very nice interview you're journalism skills get better and better with every video I can relate to being grandpa as I have two young children, and I've been asked if I am Grandpa. This Is one of my ambitions to want to move and retire to the Philippines. It is the norm there and not the exception. With every video, I watch I learn more and more. I have much respect for you Paul your public service announcements are phenomenal. I thought TB was eradicated, In America, and I believe it is so glad she got treatment and now is okay. I think most Americans can relate to the treadmill we all run on day after day trying to make money. I have worked for the same organization for 30 years and I do ok financially, but never managed to get ahead and actually have anything such as our own properly. That will be different in the Philippines. I'll get off the treadmill and really start to enjoy life something, I was never able to do in America. Stress every second of every day, I had enough. Also, if my wife were given a chance to live in America or the Philippines she would choose the Philippines. This is after almost ten years in America I love America just cannot afford to live here anymore.

Paul thanks for the interview. When I was about to bring my finance to the states he also failed the X ray test at St. Lukes. Usually they administer a TB culture which takes around 2 months to complete. His culture was negative so he was cleared to proceed with the interview. I assume her culture was positive so she had to go through the months of treatment. My husband went back to the Philippines to visit his family a couple of months ago and he called me after a week and said he missed work. Even though we have a fast pace of life and stress he has been able to help his family and change their standard of living. He hopes to build a home for his parents one day. About the cold and snow he loves it. I personally can't stand it growing up in NY. Maybe one day we will retire to the Philippines but for now he is happy in the states. Married 6 years now.

SO, without getting into the details of what was in this video, I just want to say that I really feel empathy for this woman. It's true that you can have a disease for a long time and never know it. I had cancer for months without knowing it. I was lucky in that when it was discovered it wasn't stage 3 or 4 cancer, that it was still stage 2. But the weird thing for me is that even though it was stage 2 (had started to be in lymph nodes) that the source was undetermined. This is terrible really, because the doctors can't target a specific spot and they have to hit a wider area with radiation, and since this was head and neck cancer it did some serious damage, the treatment. So finding out you have some disease as serious as TB is hard to deal with for many people. It sucks the joy out of your life for a time period and it's only if you have a full recovery and are back to being symptom free that it becomes easy to put behind you after you are well past the treatment of it. So, more than anything else I just want to give well wishes to the woman, and without her name listed in the comments I don't know how to spell it. My wife had friends in Manila. They know ALL ABOUT small apts. there because the costs are high if you want something with comfortable living areas.

If I would have been sitting next to her when she said that the first time I would have fallen out of my chair laughing.
