It's been a while since I've wrangled bees all on my own, and since both Charlie and Ralph had prior commitments, I was left to handle the job the best I could, single handed. As it turned out, the homeowner was happy to assist in any way, and I was very happy for the help.
We have had an unusual swarm season this year with many of them coming late in May and right up to the middle of June. The reason for it, so many hives become honey bound and there is no more room in the hive. When that happens, swarm cells are formed and the hive splits.
On this video, as I was checking out a swarm that had just moved in, another one started moving in just across the driveway. I told the homeowner I'd be back the next day and remove them both, a swarm twofer.
The second swarm was a bit tougher to remove than the first one, and I had to drill sideways through a stud to get to the bees, but it all worked out well. With both swarms vacuumed up and the queens in their respective cages, the bees were moved up to the abbey to begin their new live as Abbee Honey bees. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

Love the videos. You manage to not only teach beekeeping skills, but you bring glory to God at the same time. You have taught me to not only keep bees, but to give all the credit and glory to Him (“by the grace of God…”, “Thank you Jesus.”) The fact that you do all that AND make it fun is icing on the cake! God bless you, Mr. Ed! You make a difference in the lives of bees and people!

@@reandranisbet8037 I'm an old bat. 58 yrs young. Let me give some hard won advice: Sleep is your best weapon. I know you have to cram. But if your brain isn't rested, if it doesn't have time to sift through everything you've jammed in there....then during the exam it will all float away. ALWAYS find a way to work 3 or 4 hour long naps into your study cramming. That's enough for a REM cycle, and that's what your brain needs to organize the new info and get refreshed. I'm on disability for a few things, one of which is insomnia. It destroyed my life. I can work in 2 to 3 hour long naps, a few a day. That's how I survive. It takes me forever to heal, it takes forever to recover from illness and my brain function is a joke. Protect your sleep!!! Good luck with your exams, Confusion to your enemies.

What great homeowners, pleasant personalities. Both swarm cavities opened up and ready for the removal. I know you missed Charlie and Ralph but you had good help with the whole deal. You made it look too easy. Now the gentleman is ready to wrangle bees. Since you've had so much swarm activity in that area it'll be nice to have a spotter who understands the process. Now when you get a call he can check it out, take pictures and help formulate a plan without you having to make a scouting trip. You might have even cultivated a new beekeeper. Blessings to you good sir.

When spraying the the Honey Bandit you have to be concerned where it will land. If it lands on the bees, it will kill them. If it lands on the comb, it will be useless. That being said, once you know where you want to spray it without harm to the bees or comb, and allowing a passage for the bees without running into it, let her rip. Then, watch the bees run. Mr Ed how are you? First upload on your channel I've watched in a while and as usual really enjoyed viewing, thank you. Quick question for you, how long can a bee or wasp still sting after it dies? Reason I ask is I have just recently destroyed a very small wasp nest in my kids playhouse which had some very young wasps developing inside. Hope all is well
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 жыл бұрын
Glad to have you back again Dom, you have been missed. To answer your question, as long as the bee or wasp's body is supple, it can sting you. There have been many times when I am crushing honey comb and don't see the dead bee, I will get a stinger in my hand. And yes, it does hurt. The good news is as long as you don't come in contact with the stinger you will be OK. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

When you add swarm bees like these to your queenless hives, is there ever any aggressive behavior, i.e. old bees vs new bees? Or are the established bees just receptive of getting a new queen and they accept the bees that come with her?
@JeffHorchoff

The bees are introduced in a confused state, and because of that, there is no fighting between them. I was removing bees from a brick column in a 100 year old house, The column used to be a porch but had been turned into a room. The top was almost closed so i put honey bee gone in 2 holes that i drilled in the brick about waist high. i used a spray bottle and i puffed in a ton of smoke. I got about 2-1/2 gallons of bees and thought i had most of them. The home owner called me back about a week later and said they still had bees. I had stuffed the entrance tight with Screen wire but i guess i missed something. We never say the queen. How much honey robber do you use and how would you get it into the column?
