Cantaloupe season is upon us! Nothing I like more than fresh fruit from the garden. How do you know if cantaloupe is ready? It's quite simple. Give the cantaloupe or melon a gentle tug. If it falls off the vine it's ready and guaranteed to be delicious. Well.... unless the bugs have gotten it!

Thanks for the information about the Cantaloupes because I have some and I wasn’t sure when they were ready to pick. I went straight out to my garden and tried your technique and it works.

I built two waist-high planters and put a few hills at one end. The vines went over the edge and are now 8' away. Before the planters, I put tons of crushed gravel on top of the soil. The melons and lopes are sitting on the gravel. Also have sugar baby melons growing, etc. Thanks for the quick tips! Cheers, Bob

@ThuyTran-vj1lx the cantaloupe never worked out. I watered it too much, and they burst open unripe. I just built a reverse hugelkultur garden bed. It's 3 layers, 1 truck load of wood chips, 1 yard compost, 1 yard garden soil mix. I used rotten fire wood for a boarded. All ingredients were free. It was 102⁰F today, what should I plant in this heat?

Do you think growing cantaloupe is easier vertically on trellis or on the ground?
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 3 жыл бұрын
there are pros and cons to both. its easier to grow on the ground but more prone to bugs and molding.

I have had success with putting a nearby leaf under each cantaloupe to prevent soft spots. Be careful not to tug on the leaf or the cantaloupe when doing this.

@@pestandlawnginja thanks for such a speedy response. I know it works for certain plants just don't know a lot about cantaloupe, however I seem to have gotten lucky because the plant is big and healthy and producing a bunch of fruit! I like the idea of a gentle tug. Going to try that this evening as I think one or two may be ready! PS you got another sub! Come check my channel if you get a chance, still kinda random but I try to put something out daily. Everything from shooting, dogs, garden etc. Basic country life. I'm raising a whitetail fawn presently and will probably be the main subject for a while!
