I love the videos. Would this be the same procedure for Fall Season as well?
@TurfMechanicАй бұрын
Thanks a bunch Loua! Yes, the procedure would be the same for the Fall however I wouldn't let the grass get tall going into November. By that point sun is too low to have enough intensity to keep tall cut grass standing straight up. I'd probably lean on keeping the young grass cut a touch lower than I plan on keeping it next year. I'd also want you to expect the amount of time for cool-season grass seed to grow into mature grass to be faster in the Fall. Climate conditions are so much better for grass seed and baby grass in the Fall than they are in the Spring so seed germinates faster and baby grass matures faster. In this video I documented the growth of fescue at probably the worst time of year possible to grow it from seed. It was a struggle but we got it done. :)

If I’m using a battery mower should I bag or mulch for newly seeded lawn?
@scubatom82322 жыл бұрын
I need to seed 12 acres in West Kentucky. Trying to decide between tall fescue, or Kentucky 31. It will definitely not be watered. I will no till drill it in. Which would you recommend?

I don’t have a reel mower can I use a regular gas mower on my new grass?
@TurfMechanic6 ай бұрын
yes you can, but I would recommend you let the baby grass grow a few extra days before taking a rotary mower to it though and if possible try to make sure you have the sharpest blade on your mower to limit uprooting baby grass. For rotary mowers on new grass I also wouldn't recommend cutting it extremely low. Lastly, be very careful turning the mower on the baby grass, the mower wheels if they slide on the soil even a little bit can easily uproot a bit of grass. Just stay gentle with it all. Doesn't take too long for that grass to harden off but those first couple mows you gotta be careful

Is it 38 days or 3 weeks?

3 weeks of growth. 38 days from seeding day. The difference is the germination period.

Only thing that won't work for me is too high cutting. Grass will always droop and the desired effect can't be reached.

That doesn't seem like you got very good germination for such a small space. Not poking at you I'm giving you my honest opinion. How does it look now a year later.

feel free to shut me down with facts, but why does the yard look so patchy if you seeded it correctly, second, your comment about the seeds germinating in a couple months with the clippings covering it, seeds don’t come back once they die, why would they sit dormant in the soil while wet and not grow and then all of a sudden grow a few months later? not being a dick just doesn’t make sense
@TurfMechanic Жыл бұрын
good questions that other no doubt have wondered but didn't ask - this lawn was the subject of my demonstration of how easy or possible it is to seed an entire lawn without covering the seed, video is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXeZg6p9Z6l6gqc in the spring it's even harder to seed without covering the seed so that explains the patchiness. by Sept of the same year, just three months later it looked like this in my low nitrogen fertilization plan video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4bElKipgd-LgNE - as for the question about seeds dyeing, if a seed gets wet then dries off it isn't dead. In the bag, seed has internal moisture levels and when we water we slowly saturate the seed. If saturated at the right temp the inside biological processes of germination begin but if it dries out too much during this stage the seed dies and can't "restart" germination. If however the seed is wetted and then dries out before the germination process begins it can still be germinated. This is part of the priming process of seed shell softening. You can actually prime a seed months ahead of trying to germinate it without killing it. Without scrubbing back through the video to see word for word what I said I'll say now that if a seed hit the ground and is watered enough to increase moisture content but not start the germination process then that means the shell has been "primed" (to some extent) and when conditions are perfect for germination it will happen slightly easier (months later) - this is the whole concept of dormant seeding. Dropping seed in winter and softening the shell before temps support germination so that germination eventually happens earlier in the Spring that it would have otherwise. This video was filmed in June at peak sunlight intensity and at the early stages of peak heat. Although internal moisture content of a lot of the seed was high perfect germination conditions weren't there so later in the summer when conditions were better for germination (and with the help of an august overseed to compensate for some seed loss in June and July) we filled out really well before Fall ever arrived. Hope all of that makes sense to you and anyone else curious enough to read this. No hard feelings at all btw, your questions are quite valid and probably many others have asked the same without typing them out.

@@TurfMechanic dude now i’m so glad i commented that. hear me out, i’ve been slowly becoming a grass freak, have grass pots growing in my house to test different theories, and bro you gave me the answer and so much more, that was really freaking interesting to read exactly how the seeds work, you can’t really find that online, thank you so much and thank you for quick responses! also i think that answers my question about why the seeds i plant inside that i keep really saturated, germinate a couple days before the outside ones do cause i’m not able to keep them so moist, yeah? or no

You should never be seeding in the spring. That should be done in the middle of October.
@johnchase97727 ай бұрын
That’s simply not true. I renovated my front yard April 2024 and it’s coming in perfect. If you start it early enough it’s usually ok
@zograf45727 ай бұрын
@@johnchase9772 The main problem is that there is not enough time for grass to prepare for summer heat. The roots are not developed enough, the plant is not mature enough. The natural cycle is developed in such a way that the plant needs winter and early spring to grow. Im not saying it is not possible to do it your way, but you will need to water your lawn the entire summer in order to prevent massive grass die-off. You will see what will happen if you dont. But, nevertheless, write me in the autumn and tell me how it went through the summer and how much of the grass have survived. Im quite curious myself 😊

I laid new soil and planted all new grass in several areas of my yard last summer June-September. Most of that time it was 90 degrees and no rain. Cool season lawn, fesque, rye, bluegrass mix. It looks beautiful a year later. Very healthy.
