Last year, even though I knew the fall was uncommonly warm, I planted hardneck in October -the recommended time for my region. By late November, the garlic had stalks a foot high. Between heavy rain and a spring cold snap, half were toast by summer. But hey, ya learn more from mistakes than successes. This year, I'm starting later (depending on the forecast 😉), and wedging umbrella stands between the grow bags, so no one drowns during downpours!

My garden here in the Calgary area was pretty much decimated due to 30c weather at the time we had extreme water restrictions. 🤦🏽 oddly enough,the only 2 things that managed to hang on were my garlic and a few onions. I think it’s due to the fact that I was a bit off on planting the garlic last fall and the bulbs must have grown quite healthy roots? In any case,the garlic was pretty small,but the roots were robust so it’s a win I spose!

I saw your video last year on Reddit and chatting with you a bit about growing garlic. Didn't manage to get to it last year, but this year, I'm set. Beds are prepped, I've got 3 varieties of garlic purchased and I'm just waiting for the first week of October to hit (zone 5A). You aren't wrong, I'm super excited to get my garlic in ground but I'm being patient so I get it right. Thanks for your videos! My wife wants to know what happened and why I'm suddenly a farmer.

Where I live in central WA, our first frost can come around September 27 through October 6. The garlic that I planted about a week ago came from one of the other community garden members. She gave me two bulbs (or is it heads) of garlic earlier in the year. She had just pulled her garlic from her bed. I used the biggest cloves for planting. I covered the cloves with about 6 inches of soil. I don't have mulch; so, used plant stems from other garden plants that I had cut down. I'll see what happens come Spring.

Our last frost was almost a month off this year and I'm suspicious of our first frost being as late as usual this year as well. I'm siding on the side of caution and planting next week. I had a year where I planted a little too late and I lost a lot of bulbs to rott because they didn't root well enough before the cold came

We had a lot of 100* days this summer. My veggies didn’t like that much. My spinach, lettuce, cilantro, and radishes got their second planting two weeks ago to. We’ll see how it goes. Peas haven’t liked it here. I moved my green beans and they didn’t like the new location. The squash and zucchini did ok though. We live in an HOA subdivision so don’t have a ton of space. All my potato plants got too hot and dried up, but then grew new vines last week. Not so sure if that’s a good thing or not. 😂 Just trying to learn. Sometimes the hard way. My fruit trees did well. Tomatoes not so well. Peppers did great. No cucumbers this year. But herbs are doing well. So we’ll try again.

Can you get garlic going in a refrigerator combo with freezer?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms2 ай бұрын
Hey Scott, you can definitely vernalize your hardneck garlic in the fridge. The only issue is, planted outside your garlic is also building that root network over the cold dormancy period. In your fridge, they can't do that. They'll be behind and likely smaller.
