I’ve been digging up wild bramble berries for a few years now and I have around 15 different varieties of berries, from around 8 or 9 blackberry varieties, to wineberries, black raspberries, and a few different red raspberry varieties. I’ve got huge patches of red raspberries and some thornless blackberries mixed in. I’ve been concentrating on cleaning up the patches and putting them in trellised boxes so they’re easier to control and harvest. I’ve been experimenting with different pruning methods and I’m excited to try some of these

So I placed my blackberries stalks along a fence line. I have trained them to go over the fence and over an arbor. I have done some trimming. It is Aug now, end of season. So should my task be to trim all branches over the arbor, taller than 5 feet, shoots that are growing into the lawn? But what about all that fresh looking green shoots, should I be tough and trim those also? I guess I am like you and I hate chopping that that looks healthy. Just need marching (trimming) orders. ;)

Thanks for the great video. I'm a first time grower and mine are producing fruit for the first time, some of the side laterals are real long and growing along the ground. Basically, just prune out the dead canes, keep them before 4-5 ft tall, and don't let the side laterals more than 18" long? Are you continually pruning the side laterals or just pruning while the plant is dormant?

Crikey, video is great but I'm so confused with ours. Any comments or hell gratefully received. We have thornless blackberries growing against what was a horrible, dark, pebbledash (next doors garage) in our yard. Our yard is now green and that wall needed a bully to manage growing up on the trellises. So we plated 3 blackberries to which scrambled up in its first year then last year shoots between 50cm and 150 cm came forward put and produced so many flowers and berries. The wall is now covered and green year round. So I've branches growing up, still green... Then the fruited branches growing out from the wall. So.... How do I prune? My gut said to leave the berries we didn't get and birds have enjoyed. So it's now March and there are shoots showing.... Any thoughts on how and where to prune? Thanks

Ohhhh, I messed up. I got a blackberry on clearance a few years ago for 75c. I didn't expect anything. Last year, I couldn't keep up with all the fruit! Unfortunately, it's thorny. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I pruned way too early and, I think, backwards. (Thorns made me angry!) I now have a thornless, but squirrels beat me to all but ONE fruit! They don't bother the thorned plant, tho. I don't want to deal with messy netting. Maybe a pvc frame for netting? How do you have all those exposed and still get fruit?? I'd love to move the thorned plant elsewhere and take my chances on its survival, but I won't get fruit from the other. Help!

Grown wild transplants for years. You trimmed last year canes at about 5 feet and laterals from reaching out of the row. Does that stop next seasons growth essentially where you trimmed as far as fruit production goes? Or will the plants vegetate more AND bear fruit on this early season growth?

Great video! I bought a blackberry plant last year and it's producing fruit this year and I'm glad I decided to check out how to prepare it to be successful again next year! Thanks so much! One question. Does the plant put up the same number of fruit baring...bearing (sp?) stalks each year? Or does it ever start to grow more stalks over time? I'm just wondering if I should invest in another plant of if I'll have plenty in the next couple years?
@FarmAlarm Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Don't look at it as if the new plants frow from the old plant, but the new comes from the root system. The root system grows over time and new plants pop up more and more. So yes, if you start with 4 plants, it won't just keep growing 4 new shoots (plants) year after year. It will start popping up new shoots all over the place.
@scarletNbloom Жыл бұрын

What if u let a trailing primacane grow as long as it can, ofcourse tying it to trellis at reasonable height. Then clipping the tips of each side lateral. And then cutting off that entire cane after its done fruiting. Dont u think this will increase yiels instead of cutting a new primacane at 5 ft height. Plz respond quick as its 5th january here in pakistan and i dont want loose fruiting from my only blackberry plant.i want to learn better so i started with one plant instead of dealing with too many. Thanks. Nick
@FarmAlarm2 жыл бұрын
I personally think if you prune them shorter, it will produce higher yield, better fruit, and bigger fruit. I think if you let them grow longer it will put more energy into growing the plant instead of growing the fruit.

Helpful video! I hope! We have always had wild blackberries, huge canes, 19 feet high, bird nests inside the mess. We have never pruned them correctly, only cutting the huge canes when they attack us. Read: bloody! I could some canes were older than others, but didn't know about first year and second year growth and fruit. Like fruit trees! But the deer eat the lower half of the leaves, so are they preventing fruit? This year I went in and hacked the entire bush, super old and dead canes. I wish I could attach a photo! So this year, we should just expect green vines of growth, and no berries, right? Next year, these green vines should turn reddish, bearing fruit. And more green vines coming. The year after next, prune the brown, dead out. Each year, also prune each vine back to 5 ft or so. After fruit production of course. Sound right? We want to build fencing around. Do you advise thinning and training bushes/vines along fencing through the middle of a bush to create rows for easier picking and pruning?
@FarmAlarm2 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great plan, and yes all is correct. Trellis on a fence will be a good idea. Also check out this video --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXOQm5WfidqYb68

What time of the year do you do transfers. As wet as we have been recently is there a chance of fungus problems?
@FarmAlarm6 жыл бұрын
It depends what you are transplanting exactly. If you are planting a brand new shoot that just popped up in the spring, I recommend transplanting it as soon as it pops up. But as far as a second-year plant, they are good to transplant while dormant. So anytime late winter is fine. But if you are worried about it being too wet you can wait until late April. You just do not want it blooming a bunch. Or it can go into shock.
