I had a palantir debt spread expiration feb 19, 35/36 spread, ITM 1 week prior to expiration tried to close for profit, wasnt able to close no one picked up the spread.

Seems like spreads are a pain to close. I usually just do selling calls or puts.

You can do it any time before it expires its best not to wait too long

You ALWAYS have to roll BEFORE expiration. You cannot do anything AFTER expiration.

You can roll on expiration date up until 3pm (not 4pm) generally. However, you may get assigned/exercised at any time if you wrote the option.

I rolled out a losing CSP with a credit and it greatly reduced my excess maintenance. Didn’t see that coming.

Looking for some math to figure out when BEST to roll. I'm in a pretty volatile trade right now with a spread expiring mid July. I'm in my account all the time looking at this thing as time marches on. If I had rolled this spread to October 2 weeks ago, I would have netted an additional $2600. Today, rolling out to the same expiry day in Oct. would get me $1900. is there any way to make a better guess when to pull the trigger?

You'll never go broke locking in profit. Too many people want to get the absolute MAX value on every trade. You need to get that thought out of your head. Forget it. It's a fantasy. The best time to roll your option (IMO) is on the day of expiry and the Stock price is VERY close to your Strike price (ATM). Rather than waiting and "guessing" whether or not the call expire ITM or OTM, roll the trade another week, and pick up more premium (and maybe adjust your strike higher or lower depending on how you believe the stock is going to move). Give yourself more time to be right.

@@vegasjosh8249 -can you show the mechanic's of rolling? Maybe, an example. Do you roll ON THE DAY OF EXPIRATION, and do you have until the hour that market closes to roll, even if the strike price has already been reached earlier in the day? I think this is the question.

I bought 341 GDX 2/21 $27 puts. Avg price = $.09. Gold went up instead and puts are now standing still @ $.01. Would it make sense to roll this option? I'm panicking right now. I am just learning about options, know so little. Really need help here.

rolling usually works for option sellers, not sure if it will work for buying puts

Sell a call next time instead. Then you could roll. Rolling doesn’t work well when you’re paying a debit to do it.
