Practicing and improving your short game is more likely to improve your scores than a new set of irons I think

No offense intended but I don't believe that having clubs that are brand new or 10-15 years old makes too much of a difference for an average to worse player. As an example, I don't shoot 90 because I miss hit an older club that would have been a better shot with a new club. I shoot ninety because I duff multiple shots so badly throughout the round that it makes me at best a bogey golfer. The game is still fun. And I don't even slow down the group. Hitting a brand new club four inches behind the ball provides the same result. I have a set of 1999 Ben Hogan Apex Edge and a set of 2009 Taylormade Burners. If you remove all the duffs I would shoot low 80's with either clubs. Just my opinion.

For me... Getting forged irons was a game changer. With game assisting irons, I couldn't feel anything. Had no clue what the club head was doing! Once I switched to CB forged, I learned so much! However, I am an ex-ice hockey player, who is decently athletic. So, this was for my particular case. There could be many players like me, out there! Side note: I did also invest in an at home simulator. This combined with changing my irons, has me hitting fairways and greens much more consistently!

Still using Mixuno MX23's from around 2005! Over the years I've asked, either in lessons or in the occasional wood or wedge fitting, if I should change the irons. The answer has always been the same - no. I still like the feel, and bizarrely also the fact that they may not be quite as forgiving as a modern irons - I like to feel my mishits. Having said that I am thinking of looking at some new irons in the spring as I increasingly I dislike the level of offset. My tendency is to hit too much from the inside, and the offset sometimes makes me worried about a shank!

I'm playing something called Cantera, purchased in 2001 as a set to get out golfing 1-2X per year. Since then I have added Adams wedges and hybrids, along with an Adams driver. This is the end of my second year playing regularly, and I am still improving with the irons in terms of distance and constancy (I have achieved some consistency in gapping), although consistancy dropped off at the end of the season after shooting a sub 100 round as a result of dropping my back shoulder when striking the ball. I also seem to have two swings, one dead straight, and one dead to the right (I'm a lefty) that I need to sort out. My thinking has been learn to play these better, and then at some point possibly get fitted for some senior irons when distance becomes an issue.

My handicap is way better now (14) and I’m interested in new irons, but I’m conflicted whether a fitting is really necessary (everyone in the golf industry says yes). But besides getting to try a bunch of different irons, do the majority of fittings actually change the loft/lie of the standard irons loft/lie that the manufacturers provide? Seems to me if you are serious about trying to improve your swing, you would want to keep standard specs of the irons and try to improve your swing to match the manufacturers specifications. What do you guys think?
