Practicing and improving your short game is more likely to improve your scores than a new set of irons I think

You see I tried this mindset, but then I remembered I only had a 7 and 9 iron. That’s when I realized a set of irons would be the single purchase that will actually bring down my handicap Lol

Nah. Really depends on the irons as well. If your going from Wilson’s to APs, or similar upgrades, you’ll notice for sure.

I'm going the opposite direction. I play my Mizuno 221s but I'm also buying and restoring ten and twenty year old Mizuno blades to play along with my modern blades. There is little difference in them until you go back a long way and they're beautiful, feel great, and add a dimension to playing that I enjoy.

No offense intended but I don't believe that having clubs that are brand new or 10-15 years old makes too much of a difference for an average to worse player. As an example, I don't shoot 90 because I miss hit an older club that would have been a better shot with a new club. I shoot ninety because I duff multiple shots so badly throughout the round that it makes me at best a bogey golfer. The game is still fun. And I don't even slow down the group. Hitting a brand new club four inches behind the ball provides the same result. I have a set of 1999 Ben Hogan Apex Edge and a set of 2009 Taylormade Burners. If you remove all the duffs I would shoot low 80's with either clubs. Just my opinion.

For me... Getting forged irons was a game changer. With game assisting irons, I couldn't feel anything. Had no clue what the club head was doing! Once I switched to CB forged, I learned so much! However, I am an ex-ice hockey player, who is decently athletic. So, this was for my particular case. There could be many players like me, out there! Side note: I did also invest in an at home simulator. This combined with changing my irons, has me hitting fairways and greens much more consistently!

Only been playing a year. My handicap according to Garmin is 32 (I know thats not a gospel figure, or even an impressive handicap!). Initially had a set of Bay Hill irons that I was given by a mate who had them new about 20 years ago. After about ten months or so and my first few rounds I bought a set of Wilson Staff D7 second hand off golfbidder. Took some getting used to and a few experiences at the range made me feel I made a bad choice. But now they're fine for me. Hit a 220yard with my 5i yesterday which I was chuffed with.

I’m in my first year, shooting 108 with game improvement irons. Things are just starting to pull together for my game but I’m still thinking a lot about my swing and making little tweaks. My plan is to keep the burner set (and my one upgrade, a Callaway driver) until my swing is consistent and i’m shooting low 90s. Then I’ll open the wallet, get a fitting and buy whatever I shoot best with at that point.

Still using Mixuno MX23's from around 2005! Over the years I've asked, either in lessons or in the occasional wood or wedge fitting, if I should change the irons. The answer has always been the same - no. I still like the feel, and bizarrely also the fact that they may not be quite as forgiving as a modern irons - I like to feel my mishits. Having said that I am thinking of looking at some new irons in the spring as I increasingly I dislike the level of offset. My tendency is to hit too much from the inside, and the offset sometimes makes me worried about a shank!

I just got my brand new Ping G400s, got a great deal since they are considered a 2 year old club by now. They have Alta Graphite shafts, feels soo good. Forgiving, long but I can easily spin the 7 iron 6,500 or more and I can launch them at 20 or 21 degrees which is good for a 7. I'm a 12 handicap. Really happy with them. I tested the Titleist t 300s, the Cobra f9, the Wilson V6, and the Callaway Mavericks. The g400s had by far the best performance, especially with the graphite shafts.

I'm playing something called Cantera, purchased in 2001 as a set to get out golfing 1-2X per year. Since then I have added Adams wedges and hybrids, along with an Adams driver. This is the end of my second year playing regularly, and I am still improving with the irons in terms of distance and constancy (I have achieved some consistency in gapping), although consistancy dropped off at the end of the season after shooting a sub 100 round as a result of dropping my back shoulder when striking the ball. I also seem to have two swings, one dead straight, and one dead to the right (I'm a lefty) that I need to sort out. My thinking has been learn to play these better, and then at some point possibly get fitted for some senior irons when distance becomes an issue.

Ive had 3 sets irons past 10 years. Had Cleveland cg gold forever till the m4s came out got them and just upgraded to mav max not cause i felt i needed extra help from max irons but cause i was gettin way better flight and height out the max with 3 to 5 degree weaker lofts than the m4s but i will say the extra offset in the mav max has been an adjustment had alot of left shots for while have chilled it out to a draw and playin well with 5 to 10 yard gain over the m4s

Bought some brand new p790s a few months ago. Was playing RAM irons prior from the late 90s. I can’t imagine clubs getting any better anytime soon from my p790s... most likely will have them a long time :)

I’m using the Callaway Hot X-24 irons. I bought them off the rack in 2012 because they were on sale (new model coming out the next year). My handicap is way better now (14) and I’m interested in new irons, but I’m conflicted whether a fitting is really necessary (everyone in the golf industry says yes). But besides getting to try a bunch of different irons, do the majority of fittings actually change the loft/lie of the standard irons loft/lie that the manufacturers provide? Seems to me if you are serious about trying to improve your swing, you would want to keep standard specs of the irons and try to improve your swing to match the manufacturers specifications. What do you guys think?

I play Callaway XR steelhead irons, been playing 42 years and I have probably had 20 to 22 sets of irons. I have been known to change them after 8 months!! My handicap has gone up (H/Cap index14) but that's due to age (77) I can no longer reach long par 4s in 2 or par 5s. However my short game has improved, had to.

Using Wilson Staff Pi5's at the moment, hand me down from my bro. I'm quite a high handicap so might have to get something more forgiving but not sure which irons to go for

Playing Callaway X-22 Tour irons since 2009. I'm thinking about getting a fitting in the spring looking towards a players iron, but one that will give me a higher trajectory and a little more distance.
