Yes. Werner Herzog said the first thing that he does is sets his scene. Then puts people in the scene. Sometimes I tell people they need to orbit the people who are the subject to create the background and the scene that they want. You don't rotate around your feet. You orbit around the subject.

Welcome back There are few channels that I find genuine practical content. You are one. Sean Tucker is the other. I’m not a wedding photographer. I shoot minor hockey, and on the lower end of equipment. I understand what you’re saying about lenses. I have three. An. 18-55 kit lens, a 50mm 1.8 and 70-300mm zoom. I find that if I want to isolate a subject, I can choose the 50mm for bokeh. But sometimes that won’t work because I can’t be where the subject is. My 70-300 is variable aperture, but I find that at 6.3 or 7.1 and long length from 200-300mm I get good compression and the background is blown out. At the arena I zoom in to capture individuals or some action far from where I’m standing. . I recently took a photo of mourning dove outside my window at 300mm and f:/7.1. It was beautiful. . The 50 and zoom lens are good when I have a story to capture or the subject has a story to tell me and I want to capture that. At the arena I I use the zoom a lot. But if I want to catch good solid action and tell a wider story of a goal and players celebrating the 18-55 Is good for that. As you said, energy and emotion in the moment. Similar idea you had shown for a wide angle of children playing You mentioned being on the dance floor at weddings. I’ve seen a pro photographer take photos from the side at my nieces wedding. The issue I have, is that everyone gets those kinds of images pocket cameras, phones and tablets. Things can be missed. Facial expressions or body responses, etc. Those images you take are different because of the emotion, and no one else can capture that moment. You mentioned that your schedule is busy and wasn’t expecting so many followers or put videos out on a regular basis. It’s your channel. You do what you want. If you have time to say something, your subscribers will watch.

Nice video as always! I really like that you describe your use of wider angles exactly how I love to use them too. They really take the viewer inside the action. Its interesting how nearly all couples react pretty similar to those wide shots after they saw the photos. They always start to talk about that specific moment and share their memories instantly after seing a wide angle shot from the dancefloor for example. They instantly start remembering. I just love that.

I sometimes feel slightly guilty about watching gear videos since I know technique is more important than gear, but most of the technique videos can’t quite grab my attention (they sort of just list obvious technical info?). Anyway, I’m really loving your videos here and they really make me think about my photography. So thanks for that! Also: I’m not a pro photographer but I took some photos when my cousin got married (in addition to the pro one). It just so happened that I only had a 35mm FF equivalent (23mm APS-C) lens at the time. I wasn’t very ambitious about it but I took photo because it was fun. I rememer being slightly envious of the pro photographer that had a 85mm. Anyway, to my surpise at the time, the images ended up having this great sense of presence! You really felt like you where part of the action. (Which I was, I was a participant, so the dance floor images I literally took while dancing myself.) I feel like a 28mm equivalent maybe would have worked even better for this.

11:48 - what I'm doing is - >MAKE< a photograph, create art and it's moment. No spray and pray. See the photo before the shot. It's the difference between 3,000 shots in the end of the day and maybe 2 good ones in there versus a couple hundred and 50% excellent results where the other 50% is actually still really good. In the photographer's eyes, and the client's. But, >in< the dance floor, you need to be the eagle eyed shot with great timing as reportage or documentary shooter. Here it is about the moment and action more so than the carefully chosen composition with background in mind (yet it's never forgotten). This is where we need to spend 10,000 hours and build routine. Glad to see you back, Will. Not surprised you are super busy, life is easier with the small venue weddings, huh? Less people to corral for the group shots, more intimate contact with the whole group. A unit on your big vs. small event approach differences would be welcomed. Great points as usual, I've been thinking about getting a 24 and leaving the 35 at home more lately. Don't have a fixed fl, using a 24-70 to accomplish both tasks on one body which has me with less to carry and more to focus on getting the image. Thinking the fixed fl will be even more effective after viewing this. Lovin' the Z lens quality, they just get it done better overall than the previous gen F. Sorry about the weirdo's, that's an ongoing fact out there with some who have plenty of time and little to do. I'm about to stream a facebook series 'Beyond the Cove' which will highlight people that had serious challenges with not only Covid-19 but dumbass choices in general and overcame them. Send you a link when it gets going, no pressure but would love to feature you in one of my vids for inspiration on how to grab life by the short hairs and say no more losin'/ just want to see how good life can be. Hi Will, so good to know you have been well. Glad you're looking after yourself, and really enjoyed the discussion in this video. Also, really love the example photos you used here to illustrate your points. May I ask, with the 58mm 1.4G at 6ft away from your subject, do you stop down or shoot wide open at 1.4? And when you're using the 28mm/58mm combination, are you mostly working about 6ft away from your main subject for both lenses? So, when you choose which two lens combination to use e.g. 28/58 or 35/85 or 24/50, is this based on anticipated working distance from the main subject? Or, some other factor e.g. level of compression you looking for or characteristics of one particular lens? I have the 28mm 1.8G and the 58mm 1.4G and find that neither are especially sharp wide open, but both have a lovely rendering and the 58mm has amazingly dramatic fall off after the point of focus, which I find provides a unique effect that differentiates it from the super sharp Z 50mm 1.8S (which also has very pleasing bokeh).

Do the Nikon AF-S lenses adapt well with the FTZ adapter? I'm considering moving over to the Z6 and have a couple of AF-S lenses (50mm, 85mm). Was using a D750 but now with Fuji. Plan would be to buy the 24-70 Z which would accomplish 75% of what I do. Would like to adapt the AF-S gear however (maybe even a 70-200) until I can afford the S primes. Was wondering what the shortcomings are with adapting, if any? I like portraits and landscapes/general photography.

I especially like when you said for using wide angle think of it as a landscape photo and add people on it. It’s like the scene and the story and the atmosphere that’s being presented and people are the actors. I’ve never done mucj wide angle shots because I have always been a bokeh hunting portrait shooter but now I’m gonna start practicing doing wide angle environmental portraits too. Some “pros” would put these same tips, into an online photography class and charge people. Like so many ads popping on my KZbin before I could watch a video.

Hi great that you are back with an inspiring video. I bought into the Z system, inspired by your video’s. Selling my Fiji gear, just love the handling of the Z cameras. And after see Nature photographer Morten Hilmer bringing the Z6 to the 40 degrees C below freezing and still working as the only camera, I was hooked.Just interested to know why you use the G lenses? I would say it’s because Z just does not have those focal lengths and also the 1.4s. I can’t afford them but they really need to come on with the 1.2s.

I wonder, 28mm and 58mm feels a lil bit limiting when I hear you talking about how you shoot weddings with just these two lenses. I believe that its doable, as a colleague of mine just uses 35mm and 85mm primes for weddings. So, did you got used to these lenses or had to rethink the way you taking pictures? Thank you for posting videos again. What do you say about the fact that an iPhone 11 main wide-angle camera has an f1.8 aperture and an equivalent focal length of 26 mm? An iPhone is so convenient and "good enough most of the time" to use compared to dedicating one of your 2 camera bodies to a prime focal length that's close to a 26 or 28 mm. Why not choose 2 other focal length prime lens to mount on your 2 camera bodies and use the iPhone for the 26-28 mm in order to maximize your options without carrying more gear? The only potential major downside is if you really need RAW files to edit.

Another potential down side is different colors in the files. The better sensor of a bigger camera and the better quality of a better lens gives better colors and darks and contrast than smart phones. I am not disagreeing with your point of smartphones being great. I am disagreeing that mixing phone shots into the post production would be easy or simple or doable.

85mm and 28mm and any focal length have exactly the same compression when zooming with your feet to the same framing - easy to test yourself. Common misconception, but please don't spread it.
