Is there ever a case where the leather pad should be sticking out a little from around the shoe?

Good job! One Q. You put quite a lot of work in it, but you reset the old shoes which were kind of worn in the toe. Just curios if its common practice to get as much "mileage " out of the shoes or what? rids Frederick, farrier

Thank you sir. It is very common to re-use (“reset”) shoes over time. There’s certainly a balance between a shoe that can be reset or too worn for reset and there’s multiple factors that go into that decision of resetting or fitting new shoes. You have to take into consideration the horses job, how abrasive it’s environment or paddock footing is, “did a lot of wear come from this first cycle?” if so, then the shoes may not make It thru this next cycle, and most importantly “will the foot/feet have ample protection from the shoes overall thickness thru the cycle?”. Because that’s the primary reason why we put shoes on horses-“when wear, exceeds growth”. If you’d like, I can do a video in the future talking about all these points. Thanks for watching!

@@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow Thank you for replying. Ireading your answer I gather we have the same opinion reg wether to reset or not. I do similar evaluation myself when shoeing. Though I have met colleagues who “never reset” out of principle.

Awesome job!!!!! Quick question: Did you use the dental impression along with the sole pack only because as you stated , it’s always wet where the horse resides ?? Or do you always use Dental Impression alongside sole pack as a regular practice when using pads regardless of the footing the horse will be in?? Thanks!!!!

Typically I use the dental impression in the commisures with sole pack, yes. About the only time i stray away is if the dental impression causes too much pressure on the frog area and the horse doesn't like it.
