Well done and very informative. Excellent idea to put the comparison between Scandia and Skagit on the whiteboard and the different leaders below the white board in the actual packages. Very comprehensive video and great work. Thx!

Hey Mate (as we say here in New Zealand), many thanks for demystifying the difference in these two types of lines and their respective applications too. Two handed rods are just taking off Down-under and we have to research to get this sort if information. Very clear, very informative! Well done Mate 10 out of 10!!!

Thank you for the very simple introduction. It really helps understand the difference. Large hammer, small hammer, and garden hose really help to bring it into perspective. Thanks again!

It’s hilarious that the Scandi is drawn with a butterfly and rainbow while the skagit has a machine gun and a can of dip!! Ahahaha too perfect. Scandi lines are so much fun to cast. Beautiful long gliding loops each time and the snake roll is effortless

Timothy Parks you are right for the most part. There are LOTS of lines out there that do different jobs. In this video I mentioned that 90% of today's Spey fisherman fish these two line systems. It could be even more than that. This is a general overview of the most commonly used line systems. The general public still has a hard time with this two head approach and understanding what tips go where, which line system to use, why and where. One could do a long tutorial on longer belly lines, ultra short heads, or other specialty Spey lines. And yes, it does require a lot of skill to cast big flies and tips with longer lines! But calling a Skagit line a band aid is a bit of a stretch bud! It's the right tool for the job, especially where we fish, where space for a D-Loop and longer rods is limited. Much thanks for watching and keep they feedback coming!

Timothy Parks, you may consider this "pretty general", but I think this video is pretty freakin' awesome. I'm someone who is just putting his toe into the switch and spey rod game, and this video is perfect for me. There is some analogy (ie garden hose) to help a lay person picture the concept, and detail (the lengths of heads and tips), etc. Jon, this is perfect for keeping it simple with enough information to get started. I think it's perfect.

Hello Jon...Great videos...Have you tried Scandi/Skagit Spey for Stillwater pontoon fishing? Because I fish in SoCal, mostly Bass in Lakes and Ocean. I also go to Colorado River(Smallies, Trout, Striper, others) and Middle Owens(Trout) on my toon. I had a 9' Sage and sink tips to get down to thermocline, but I always had trouble lifting and hitting water on my backcast (PITA). This Scandi/Skagit casting system works exceptionally well from Toon. I am old and can cast 70-80-90' with little effort. Here are my Specs. BTW...I don't work for any of following. Colorado XT Pontoon, Orvis Clearwater 8wt13'6"-4, Orvis Hydros Spey (Scandi) and a Series of Orvis Polyleaders + 4' mono, for surface and sub-surface. I have OPST Skagit on my 9' rod and I am getting RIO Max Skagit for my 13'6" rod. Not having to "clear" areas for backcasting on lakes/surf saves me a lot of trouble. Wind is no longer a problem because I can cast cackhanded and the appropriate Spey cast for Rig I am using. The dangle position is anywhere where the line is straight out. Normally I troll backwards. You should try this style. Nothing better than a drift in a Toon and I can use my finned feet to maneuver on stillwater. Good Luck

This is pretty general. There are Triple-density Scandi lines that get down deep for winter steel head, muting the point of needing a heavy sinktip. Casting bigger flies is more technique than line. Skagit lines, for the most part, are band-aids for poor casting skills. Plenty of mid-belly and long-belly guys are throwing sinktips and heavy flies. Just takes practice.

I found short skagit heads very convenient for trout fishing with streamers. European brown trout is more willing to take on quick strips rather then swing, so skagit cast gives a very long path for the fly to be stripped across the pool. More time for fly in the water = more fish takes.

I have a 10foot 7wt regular type sage rod. Would line would u recommend for great lakes river fishing. Just a straight sinking line? I currently have two spools for it but only one set up with a wf floating steelhead line

A opst skagit for swinging (yes it can be used single hand- all lines need running line+tip its a entire system) and the floating line is fine for indicator fishing. Most great lakes flies are weighted and big. Cold weather and sink tips being the norm..... Once your experience you can fish w/e including scandi

Great easy to understand video clearing up most of the confusion about Skagit v Scandi.Just one question as an avid Spey/Scandi guy,do I need a specific rod for Skagit fishing?
@willjohnson9412
@willjohnson9412 5 жыл бұрын
Hello William! Not necessarily - Some rods lend themselves to skagit casting a bit but you can make just about any rod skagit cast well. Some very fast shorter rods may want a bit more grains than you might think but it depends a lot on the rod + line match up. To sum up I would consider a rod with a forgiving tip but that has plenty of backbone in the butt section. There are different approaches but this type rod will be the most readily available. Thanks!

Thank you for making this video. Have a question for ya. I use an OPST Skagit head with a 5’, 7.5’, or 10’ floating tip. The floating tips are very thin compared to the Skagit head so would using a floating tip make this closer to a Scandi setup?
@ashlandflyshop770
@ashlandflyshop770 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is sort of a cobbled together scandi. A mistake a lot of folks make when adding a floating tip is they don't then add a full length leader. This is something you need to do when using a float tip on a skagit head. If this is a single hand rod a 9' leader will suffice, it's it's a switch or spey use a 12' + length leader. Enjoy!

Met an Icelandic fishing guru on a recent flats fishing trip who peaked my interest in Spey casting. Thinking about getting into it but still mastering my single handed approach. I was very confused about the difference, thanks for clarifying. Any experience with guideline rods? Have heard a lot of good things from the Scandinavians about them.

Guys, that's easy. What car do you drive when you go fishing? Volvo station wagon? - scandi. GMC truck? - skagit. joke of course
@liviuv7427
@liviuv7427 7 жыл бұрын
that's not true except for floating heads. scandi lines are capable of reaching the same depths as Skagit lines but require good casting and presentation skills. as for the flies, intruders are not the only way to fish deep. the are heavy tubes in which you can tie a temple dog fly that is very slim in the air and can get very big on the water. also the sinking heads(especially guideline 3D) cut through the wind better than anything else. a full sinker with a short fluorocarbon 52lb leader can cast any intruder you want... but who wants to fish that when you can tie temple dog fly which swims much better? to me, Skagit= simplicity and practicality but without beauty, not to mention the fact that in small rivers with clear water the water born anchor cast can spook the fish too.

Some good points bud. But, the reality is that in the Northwest 95% of steelhead Spey anglers fish either a Skagit or a Floating Scandi. And of those 95% of anglers, a good chunk of them are beginners, who can get confused between the 2 head systems and the where, when, how and why. Full sinking Scandis definitely get down and dig into the depths, but are impossible to mend once they are fishing. Unlike Atlantic Salmon, where sinking Scandis are popular and effective, for Steelhead, mending is critical. Steelhead, in general, like a slow swing. That's why we fish Skagit lines and sink-tips. This video is meant to cover the basics. It would only add to the confusion to include the dozens of other line systems.
