Tldr: People in stories easily seem dumber than they are. You have the power of hindsight. They didn't. I could imagine someone saying that with no tendency to be controlling to the point of abuse. I could also imagine someone dismissing that red flag as just bad wording. It's easy to mock people from the safety and distance of your own home, with all the time in the world and knowing a lot of the relevant facts that the person being mocked didn't know at the time. It's harder to think that critically in the heat of the moment. Also, even if she wanted the money, so what? That doesn't justify the abuse. You can't ever be sure whether that was her motivation. Technically, you can't even be sure if there was abuse, especially if you don't find court docs confirming it.

The psychologists and FBI profilers sure got it wrong years ago when they all kept saying serial killers were loners, weird neighbours, never made friends....when most of them were/are married with kids, or just married. I've watched so many crime documentaries that now I'm always wondering who the psycho is in my neighbourhood, like the cat killing 45+ year old that lives behind me. He's married and I've watched how controlling he is of his wife. Every time he goes away in his motorhome for a week or two, a gal has gone missing and is on the news by the time he's come home. He's so freakin charming to neighbours, yet incredibly creepy at the same time....hence my security camera in my backyard. 😨

It is the people who appear so normal that you just immediately overlook them till it is to late and they are with striking distance.

Exactly. Also, they're often super nice, but it's fake. If overly nice, watch out... it's usually a facade. I've been shown how cruel people can be that I've gotten to the point where I automatically assume you're guilty until you prove your innocence. I know that's a bad way to be, but it's a great defense mechanism.

That's pretty bad. I dated a guy only to find out he lied about his name. He also told me he had no children. He lied about his name in order to hide that fact that he initially had 3 kids...he KILLED one of those kids, then the state took the other 2 away. He was sentenced to eight years in prison for killing the child but got out in only three. Once released he started going by a different name. The whole thing really changed my perspective on people, life, and dating a lot. You can't trust shit. Who tf kills their own kid? Then they're just out walking around acting like it never even happened. Crazy.

@@lilyrose7082 my experience was the opposite..the nurses didn't give a damn. They sat upstairs, eating all day long and drinking coffee. Huffed whenever we asked for them to see to someone. A nurse even told us to stop fussing over a resident, who was dying. "Fuss"...when we were simply addressing our concerns. She denied there was anything wrong. The neglect was disgusting. The care assistants there were very good workers (apart from some agency staff.)

What I find most astounding about Dennis Rader is that his serial-killer personality never bled through into his good-guy personality. I've heard a lot of partners of violent killers and serial rapists etc that talk about how their partner was abusive at home as well or showed signs of deviant behaviour. Dennis Rader showed no signs and his wife and kids were treated really well apparently. The main reason he stopped killing for so long was because he was too busy with his family and couldn't find the time to get out and kill more people. I don't know of another killer that completely stopped, even Ridgeway kept killing while married.

Fun Facts: Ted Bundy's sister was in my high-school class. & I was briefly detained by three law enforcement agencies while losing my virginity because my GF's car was a VW bug, parked on the side of the road as we trespassed on private property for the purpose of a romantic interlude. For a brief few seconds, the coppers thought they might have the suspect wanted for abducting females in the Sea-Tac area who was known to drive a bug. & Lastly, I regularly played golf and rode my bicycle on the Green River where Gary Ridgeway abandoned the ~50 corpses of his victims.
