A car market insider sees better deals ahead for new cars, but likely not for used cars....
The country experienced a car market bubble after COVID hit -- propelled by inventory shortages from disrupted supply chains & the unprecedented stimulus sent to businesses & households.
Now here in 2023, folks are beginning to wonder if we're in for a car market crash. Used car prices which nearly doubled post-COVID, fell throughout all of last year -- though they've started turning up again in recent months.
Also, lax lending standards in extending auto loans during the recent boom are coming back to bite lenders -- as vehicle affordability hits an all-time low, 60-day delinquencies on auto loans are the highest they've been in more than a decade.
Where is the auto market headed from here?
Will patient buyers for new cars and used cars be rewarded with better values in 2023?
To find out, we're fortunate to welcome CarDealershipGuy to the program. He started out as a salesperson on a used car lot and now is owner & CEO of a car dealership group. Iin order to speak freely without industry retribution, actively shares insider updates on the auto industry anonymously on his highly popular social media accounts.

There’s no doubt that it's a very challenging time right now for the average investor. Can prices keep rising, or is there a painful reckoning ahead?
Let us help you prepare your portfolio just in case the future brings one or more of the following: inflation, deflation, a bull market, a bear market, a market correction, a stock market crash, a real estate bubble, a real estate crash, an economic boom, a recession, a depression, or another global financial crisis.

I usually buy a slightly wrecked car with a salvage title and repair it. Over fifty years of car ownership this has saved me a lot of money. The cheapest car I ever bought was a '56 Chevy one ton panel truck sitting in a field with four flat tires that I bought for $50. I charged the batter, put air in the tires, and drove it as my work truck for three years. I then sold it for $350, a 700% increase. Did I report that capital gain on my income tax? No, I did not.

I'm looking for small hybrid SUVs in the Mid to hi 30"s, Those are NOT luxury vehicles compared to a $60-80k ford pickup. When you talk about this, subject, you need to either raise the cutoff towards 40K or talk about the 3 levels - cheap beaters - middle class transportation , and luxury vehicles. Most of us don't care about an $80K vehicle for $70K. We want info on the $20-40K market where normal middle class buy.

I'm doing my part. Been driving a 2004 Subaru rebuilt motor I paid $2,500 for. Cash. Got it 4 years ago. Have a very reliable mechanic and I promise I save so much not having a car payment I truly cannot figure out why do many get loans for cars. Do you want to be poor and indebted to a bank more? Makes no sense. But never has to me. I'm 51 and got a car loan at 18 and that was the last one I ever got. No credit cards. Just have more $$$ to invest and save. But I don't work 40 hours a week anymore. I'm done with the rat race. Get so much time with kids and grandkids and for myself. I'll never work 40 hours a week for rest of life. I call it semi retired. I'll work 15 to 20 hours a week until too old to work but never 40 or 50 anymore.

I bought one brand new car in 1996 and learned my lesson! From then on, I buy only cars with low mileage, one owner and 3-5 years old! When I hear people have $1,000 car payments, I cringe. I DO NOT GET IT. Other than the idea they think they look cool or something, it simply makes ZERO financial sense. I retired at 52, and learning from mistakes is one reason I was able to do so! Worked 2 jobs, single mom, no assistance, got an education to drive my salary up, have zero debt! MY ONLY FINANCIAL concern, is that the house and property I was set to buy for $300/400K, right as the pandemic hit, is now priced at $800K. There goes my dream--a dog rescue! As a singular person, I'd have to liquidate too much of my retirement to be comfortable, so for now it's $2600 a month rent, waiting for the right moment to buy. The good thing is, while it's a high rent, it's well within suggested percentages. It just feels SO WRONG lol.

The car industry wants you think of a car as a fashion statement and a 'throwaway' item like a mobile phone. So you change your car more often. But car owners stick to the old mind-set that a car is something you care for like an asset & maybe hand-down to your kids. The problem is cars can last for 20years - long enough for the auto industry to go bust if they carry on producing trendy electric or fancy hybrid cars no one wants.

I disagree about used car inventory in the future though. Like homes, we’re, and how banks don’t have to mark down bonds to market, there is a massive inventory of REPOs and banks can’t sell at the auction for the prices they want. Until these actually sell, they get to claim that full price asset on their balance sheet as inventory. Once they finally have to mark the price of the car down to sell then they will show realized losses and a ton of inventory will be pouring in during the recession.
@Studeb

Yeah, we've seen the massive used car lots, with tens of thousands of cars being stored out of cities because releasing them into the market would make prices collapse, it's all artificial.

They are just kicking the can. While they wait, it cost them money to store them, and the car deteriorate. They either take some loss now or take massive loss later. Guess which one these genius will pick
@The_regulators

Except the local car dealer who also has new inventory does not look for high milage repos, they look for low milage off-lease units so they can sell ESP policies, etc. And those are not around as there was very little leasing during the pandemic as most dealers were trying to maximize profits with "market adjustments" on retail contracts. And those that did lease exercised their Purpase Option price and bought their leases out as it was more cost effective than paying the inflated prices of a new vehicle. The only dealers that are buying your high milage repos are buyer here-pay here dealers who only want to pay 50% wholesale value.
@Studeb

What is not considered here is that demand is not consistent. If we have a serious recession and demand tanks, shortages are not shortages anymore. This is the story with real estate currently and why prices are falling even with low inventory.

@TreatsOnTheStreets
@TreatsOnTheStreets Жыл бұрын
@@Mike-fx4nu obviously. Maybe you had a hard time understanding my point. If 5 on the supply side is considered low, but demand falls to 3 on that side, then 5 is not low supply even if historically it has been an average of 8 as an example. This is why DOM for real estate is blowing up in many metros even with supply 30% lower than pre pandemic.... It's because demand became lower than the "low" supply. Now that low supply has become an oversupply. Supply and demand isn't all about supply, it's supply AND demand.
@Mike-fx4nu

@@TreatsOnTheStreets I had an easy time understanding your wrong point. This video is about cars and you're yapping now about houses. No where is supply becoming any oversupply. Supply is down 20% YoY. You proved my point, it's about supply AND demand. Come back when you're done being arrogant.
@TreatsOnTheStreets
@TreatsOnTheStreets Жыл бұрын
@@Mike-fx4nu not being arrogant you just need to look into the future not what has already happened. If all you can do is quote yesterday's news you'll always lose. Demand is going to tank for cars just like it did in the GFC. You know what spiked before they tanked in price back then? Cars. You know what salesmen said back then before prices tanked? "You better buy now before it gets more expensive". The same thing people say today. Were you old enough to buy a car back then? Dealerships would give you their firstborn child along with 0% financing to buy a car. Used cars sat on lots for 90+ days. I know because I worked at a dealership during those years and have seen how economic recessions effect car buying. There's nothing new under the sun. The economy functions in cycles and the same thing has already begun to happen again

Ongoing increases in car prices are aided by the banks offering longer loan terms. I copied a part of an article written in 1974 NYT “DETROIT, Aug, 15-Rising automobile prices are leading more buyers to take extended 42 or 48‐month loans to keep their monthly payments down. Scores of banks and major finance companies, including those for the Big Three auto makers, are now offering car loans longer than the usual 36 months.”

This was an interesting discussion, I enjoyed it per usual. I think that people are anticipating higher rates than we likely will see. If you see the turmoil starting in the economy, and a recession likely on the horizon, rates are not going to stay elevated indefinitely. So while yes supply is constrained, less people are going to be able to afford vehicles. And those of us who have been saving on the sidelines waiting this nonsense out, will likely have the upper hand when it comes to larger down payments and likely lower rates. The lower rates are not bullish for the economy, and so I anticipate as things slow down, the fed will indeed cut rates at some point and it will be sooner than many are factoring into their forecast.

With the high price of battery replacement ( and it is going to go up), we will have millions of seven year old cars with dead batteries, going to the scrap yards....or people will be getting nothing allowed on trade ins for them and the new owner will be paying $30,000 for the labor and new battery to fix it and still have a seven year old car.

That being said, I personally think most Buicks are really beautiful vehicles, and since all of them are basically re-skinned Chevys, I don't think they are too risky of a purchase, mechanically speaking, anyway.

The only reason Buick exists (and the reason why it survived the GFC instead of Pontiac and Olds) is because it is very popular in the Chinese market.

@@stevee8318 For sure. But I do think Buicks are a great option, basically slightly upscaled Chevy's, almost like what the Mercury's were to Fords. However I doubt the under 30 crowd sees the same need for that, so Buick's days are definitely numbered. Until that happens, though, I think there could be great deals to be had on that entire brand very soon.

So, sorry these guys can't help you if you want a Toyota Limited, ES300h or RX350h all hybrids. Nobody has any, unless you have already PAID to get on a list and all dealers are requesting a refundable deposit to get on a list. And, get on this list does not guarantee that you will get the configuration that you want, unless it's in the upcoming allocation and you are at or close to the top of the LIST. Patience will win out, if you can wait for the vehicle that you want, so maintain your existing car until inventory normalizes.

If there is a demand why is not inventories moving like they should lots should be pretty empty to refresh with new cars cause 2024s should be hitting the lots so you have move the 23s out to make room and if car dealers are asking the higher prices of those newer models how in the hell can you say inventory short stop. Production sell like you claim you was going to sell so there is no over stock that's what The manufactures said at once before all this mess got going there greediness is what got them all there in the first place

Do the vehicle manufacturers still have to pay pensions to retired workers, or have those generations mostly died off?
@The_regulators
@The_regulators Жыл бұрын
I just retired after 32 years working for an auto company got received a healthy retirement package. However, today's workers no longer receive a pension which also allows them to job jump as there is no incentive for them to stay with a company and they chase the higher dollar.
@knightybee

@@The_regulators thanks for the reply. Many years ago I read $1500 was priced into each new car just to fund the pension program and pay the annuitants. So it sounds like the manufacturers no longer have to pay any pension money.
