I"ve been watching for years & remember when the new project was just a pile of timber. It"s mind boggling how quick time has passed. To me it seems like only a couple months ago you we're ripping timber to start the build. Thank you for taking us along the journey, you should indeed be proud of your accomplishments. Happy New Year to you!

I am wondering what kind of interior finish you may chose. Will it be a laminat, painted finish, teak or oak venier / solid combination ?

My sense is you’re in a very good place. While working towards your future dream, life on the farm seems to be a happy place for the family, especially for Vera during her early formative years. It was wonderful to hear you recognize how important it is to keep the fun factor up throughout this build. At least as much as possible. It’s such an immense task. As for schedules, well they are best written in wet sand on an incoming tide. It’s good to have a target as long as it is flexible. I like the balance you have. Best of the season to you.

As a former custom boat builder of aluminum race boats in the 1980s we figured that when the hull and deck were structurally complete, we were about 25% of the way done. That was with a minimalist interior but more complicated deck layout and rigging than you're likely planning and also pouring the keel. You're a little further ahead at this point because you've already faired the hull. We didn't start that till the hull and deck were complete and the keel was attached. Keep up the good work!

One thing is that in few years prices of batteries are very different from now. Last spring when I bought battery cells for my electric boat, they were something like 120€/kwh. Couple of weeks ago I checked that there were cells available 72€/kwh. (four years ago it was over 350€/kwh!) And it looks like the progress is gonna continue like that! So in couple of years you can get a huuuuge battery pack with fraction of the cost! And that leans even more toward electric/hybrid solutions. Cheers and all the best! :)

I would suggest you build all the bulkheads and the major room fore aft partitions (this will require the deck hight and camber to be mocked up ) once this is done run the mainline electrical , gray water , black water and potable mains. Get the tanks located and the fastening installed, locate and install the through hull fittings , heating and ventilation rough in is next . The boat is big enough you will want to have electrical sub panels for electrical both AC and DC if that is your preference. The navigation system shielded wiring to the mast step is easy to do now as well , I would put them in loom cover tubes so they don’t get damaged, a temporary floor helps to protect the piping and electrical. By the way somehow I was unsubscribed ? I fixed it but you may want to see if others have been too. Thanks for the Q+A. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and happy new year ahead!

Regarding fire suppression, you might want to explore a fog version. This style was actually popularized on ships first, as it _dramatically_ reduces the amount of water, hence water damage - and water to pump out. Indeed, it may be possible to use the bulk of the system for the barn inside the boat when you're ready to sail. The way it generally works is with compressed nitrogen and a water tank with the water having such things as sodium bicarbonate and/or borates in it. When the system is initiated, the nitrogen finely atomizes the water such that the water droplets are pulled into the fire by natural convection. In addition to sucking out heat and purging oxygen, the chemicals help to suppress the combustion process. And the chemicals are (or can be) non-toxic and won't ruin your electrical equipment, so a false alarm doesn't do more damage than a fire might.

Thank you for the oversight and thought process you went through before starting this massive project and how your planning for the follow on tasks. I was a project manager for a US Government Agency and it was always so important to have an action plan with flexibility to make adjustments along the way. In the world of bat building, even the big manufacturers have to adjust their planning with every model and eventually the boat hits the water whenever it does. Happy Holidays to you both and wishing you all the best for the rest of the boat building project. I'll be watching every episode until splash day arrives in a few years.

Thanks for the info. Looking at your interior design of the master suite I would suggest that the bed design allow each person to get off the bed without having to crawl over each other. Even a small access at the foot on each side would make a huge difference. We had this as an issue on our boat and it’s horrible in the middle of the night every night. Keep up the good work.

My suggestion: regarding fire; make sure any material that is sanded off which includes any resins is cleaned up, bagged and removed from the building at the end of each work day. 30 years ago a friend had his hardwood floors refinished on site, but the floors had to be corrected with an immediate resending. The workers swept up the wood / urethane mix and bagged it, leaving it in the kitchen. A few hours later, the sanded material spontaneously combusted and destroyed the structure. My suggestion regarding insurance. The insurance value should be to get you back to where you are with a ship building yard doing the work. While the premium will be higher, you don't lose your dream.

Fire!!! I've just watched another channel with a guy who builds horse drawn carriages. He had a fire in his workshop some years ago which fortunately was put out by fire crews. In a later conversation with a member of the fire crew he found out that they had carried out a study of the town (US) which concluded that his shop was the highest risk and if a fire there got as far as breaking through the roof they would not have the resources to control it and would lose the whole of the towns main street. Be careful out there.

Hello Johan and Malin, thank you for your detailed explanation of the future plans with RAN50. I heard that the plans for the propulsion are not yet complete and thought of the setup like Laura Dekker had in her GinFizz. A main diesel engine and a complete emergency kit with its own shaft and propeller. You can also choose the E version with regeneration. Wishing you a blessed New Year!

Totally love your approach. FYI, there are some great videos from Bering Yachts and Selene Yachts that demonstrate how their boats (and I dare say, most boats) are constructed. Bering puts the engines if first then insulates the entire hull and runs all the wires and plumbing prior to major interior construction except for bulkheads. Selene does similar except they create large hatches above where the engine(s) go and install them last along with generators and other large engine room stuff. They do this so any large equipment in the engine room can be easily removed without boat modifications. Hope that helps. 😊

Having run many smaller projects , I would agreed with your suggestion for building the structural and other Less structural framework through the entire boat first before finishing ,and all the plumbing , electrical etc. This will give you a chance for changes if you don’t like something etc. But more importantly you will be working on similar work so the tools and supplies will be the same . If you go from structural to finishing to plumbing you will be forever changing the tools and supplies you need adding to the confusion etc . Cheers Warren
