This is such an important video. I'm glad you mentioned guys like Kobe who dominated because they had rock solid fundamentals, and not because they found ways to bend the rules. We the fans turn a blind eye to it because we love the game and our team, but like everything else the game has become corrupted in the name of profit. At some point you have to choose between the integrity of the game and it's entertainment value.

I disagree that the game has been corrupted in the name of profit... It's changed because Iverson changed it, all these modern NBA is players working outside the paint looked up to AI, they all modeled their games after him, now you pair that with today's era of "it's the players league" the players are doing what they want, and getting what they want. It just so happens, what they want also increased viewers, and sales. Would you rather watch today's basketball, or 20 years ago basketball? And sure, that might be a toss up, based on bias to your favorite generation of players, but you can't tell me todays basketball doesn't have more flair, dunks, passes, and all the other things that get the fans excited. Now let's ask, todays basketball or the strictly fundamental 40 years ago ball? It's a no brainier... The game has been evolving for many years, it will continue to evolve. I will say though, it's unfortunate the game has evolved to "step back 3 pointers" fucking harden... Aint no god damn step back, it's like 3 steps back, Idgaf when you "gathered" that ball. 🤣

@@brody6634 I'm sorry but I disagree with you...you've sort of contradicted yourself also. If they are not doing it for profit (which I think they are) then why??? Personally, I get irritated watching the games today and have largely tuned off...partly because I less leisure time than I used to, but also because to me, the game looks silly with all the legally impossible moves that have become prevalent. Maybe it is just me...as a side note, this is one of the issues that the USA 🇺🇸 Olympic teams had to deal with and part (but not all) of why the lost so many international competitions. The NBA has changed the rules but the European game is still pure. Greetings from Nigeria 🇳🇬.🙂

@@Molniyamcqueen you actually can lift your pivot foot if you release the ball prior to the foot leaving the ground. Jordan caught the ball and didn’t start dribbling. He established his pivot foot and then jabbed right. Now before that left foot leaves the ground he has to release the ball. He can also shoot or pass as well. The rule you’re talking about is if you’re already dribbling and you stop and establish a pivot foot. Your only options are to pass or shoot once the pivot is released. As it is true that Carries / travels happen all the time we cannot count steps before the ball is picked up. You can dribble stutter step 10 times then dribble again as long as you don’t carry and simply float the ball. There isn’t a rule to an exact number of steps you can take between dribbles.

Facts! This is why every record is being so easily broken by players of today to the point where previous records don’t even seem that impressive anymore. The game today protects the offensive player so much vs back in the day defense was allowed and rules were strict. I get why they’re doing it though, creating more stars and people like fast paced offense, it’s fun to watch. But what I dislike about it is what it’s doing to the legacies of past players. There are a lot of players today that will pass up a lot of older stars records but some of them aren’t even half as good as the people they are passing up. They just have the luxury of playing in an era where the game is softer and rules favor the offensive player

What do you mean even if he carries the ball. Wouldn't that by definition then be a violation. I believe the point was it has to be one or the other. Either The player doesn't dribble again and it's a travel or he does dribble again and it's cupping the ball. What he can't do is hold the ball in the air with his hand underneath it, take four steps and then dribble again. That has to be a violation, doesn't it?

@@meechtree5795 I'm at 3:44 and I disagree with multiple calls. If we go by NBA rules / how the game is ACTUALLY officiated, including the gather step rule, the high school kid's move looked clean to me, and this Booker move is unclear because we can't see if his hand is under the ball or not when Jimmy starts counting but it looks like he doesn't gather until his '2' step foot is already down (which would be a gather 0-step) so he actually had an extra step to give rather than taking 3 steps. Jimmy needs to watch more BBALLBREAKDOWN harden apologia videos. I say apologia but I agree with the gather step enthusiasts.

I'm really glad he clarified the "gather step" while also pointing out all the egregious kinds of moves that this doesn't cover. The fact that carrying in never called is a huge problem, and I suspect that this will be one of the next targets for a rule change (or for just getting officials to enforce the rules that already exist). Not happening this year, though.

The problem is hes still pointing out non violations on the majority of these clips. He keeps counting "1,2,3,4 steps" between dribbles when that is not a violation. @@justsomedudewithnoneck8329 The players today are skilled enough that the game would be plenty entertaining without allowing players to carry the ball (which is not a new rule -- it's just not enforced strictly enough). Few things that I totally disagree with: 1. you can take as many steps as you want during a live dribble. 2. offensive numbers changed because of the defensive rule changed with freedom of movement, not so much 'being allowed to carry and travel'. The point of the gather or zero step is to remove the interpretation when a step is taken very close to the same time the pick up happens. I do agree tho that some moves should be called a carry, but honestly... in the clips you have showned, I would say about 15% of em we're actual carries in my opinion

If you ignore how insufferable some old heads can be(at 41 I would be considered an old head and those guys even annoy me) and actually listen to what we say with an open mind, you'll quickly realize that we do bring up valid points. Y'all youngins like to pretend the game and players have evolved way more than they actually have, but in reality there are things people can do now that they couldn't back then. I dunno why y'all insist on acting like nothing has changed rules wise, but a lot has and the sooner you understand that the sooner you'll appreciate the past for what it was instead of constantly trying to make it live up to today. That probably won't sink in until you're older and you hear the young fans say the same stupid shit about this era we have to hear from y'all.

@@davidmartinez52420 Tbh it's annoying on both sides Some in my generation swear every player in the 80s & 90s would be terrible today and there are old heads that swear every player today would do bad if they played in the 80s & 90s But my opinion tho when it comes to athleticism it hasn't gotten that much better (in terms of vertical and speed) when Dominique Wilkins was doing insane windmills and Clyde Drexler dunking from damn near the free throw line in game. That's why I also think players like Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, etc would still be stars back then as well Some stars (past and present) would translate and adapt some won't be good if you switched eras But that's just my opinion tho and i respect yours

Thanks Jimmy, not even a real fan of the NBA (haven't watched a single whole game in my life) but you make it interesting. This whole thing seems so weird to me, like where's the competitive integrity if they call it occasionally because it isn't allowed but let it go most of the times because it's exciting? If that's what they're doing, correct me if I'm wrong. Seems even weirder that they don't just change the official rules in this case either instead of allowing the obvious and very defendable critiques of their judgements. If a rule in something competitive is enforced because of choice, not a missed call, it's inherently unfair. Meaning anyone saying "you allowed it 1 play ago, 1 week ago, their last possession" is a totally fair complaint. Perspective comes from a football official in Sweden btw. There are of course judgement calls but this seems like something consistently uncalled when it is a clear violation. Prioritizing views and money over competitive integrity just seems corrupt. That's not why Kobe got up 4:30 am or whatever time he got up to practice to be the best.

To be fair, most of the examples weren’t travels, but rather carries. In the case that it was actually a travel, they were very tough to catch in real time. For example at 3:42, the Devin Booker shot was a travel, but was hard to catch in real time. As when two feet land at the same time, it is considered a single step. However, both feet didn’t land at the same time, but rather almost at the same time, so much so that in real time it can’t be seen. That also explains the “changing of the pivot” as when you land on both, you get to pick your pivot foot. That’s just an example of a rare case of it actually being a travel, opposed to a carry.
