I would say a standard pattern of these types of games is that the further in you get, the longer the grind takes to get to the next stage. This is more true when there are ways they can make money off you, such as by forcing/convincing you to watch adds, or spending real money to make the upgrades go faster. It is in part based upon the sunken cost fallacy, where given how far in you already are, you may as well go a bit further to make it all worth it. If the grind was made apparent right at the start, you would probably just quit straight away.

I wonder if you were underestimating how much first shot power would affect your results, since its cost was lower than the other stats. It only applies once, sure, but if upgrading it gets you a flying at a high speed right off the bat, it might save you some bullets that you can use more for keeping off the ground.
