Also, if you learn to "play through" mistakes, as you say, you will eventually start making fewer mistakes as well because you're less tense and less afraid, which is always a performance killer.

Great insight for young guys. I am 61 and have played forever and still consider myself an intermediate player, but I agree with everything you said. I have played live and made mistakes, but I keep a poker face and keep going. Never stop playing and play thru it. I would be nervous for about 5 minutes, but the crowd at the bar is drunk and just want to have fun. Plus, it's supposed to be fun. . Hard work / practice makes all the difference. ♥️🤘♥️

I learned a VERY valuable lesson from the Dead. They'd traditionally lol at mistakes. It got to the point that the crowd would be quite amused, especially if Jerry or Bob @#$^@ up. ...smart & fun.

If you feel bad about your playing, remember that the guys on stage only have to remember a set list... 15 - 20 songs and that is all they have to play for an entire year. Personally as a Tutor. I have to remember around 400 songs at any given time on 4 different instruments. 😎

just, THANK YOU. You just described all my fears and worries when I'm performing, recording, learning from social media vids, or even teaching my students. And I'm sure that this is a matter that creates anxiety and bad thoughts in many mid/high level guitarists. Interestingly, these symptoms are more evident the better musician you are. As a comforting anecdote, a few days ago, I saw a video about two great reputed players jamming with an even more great reputed player (won't say names obviously). You know, jamming, no tricks, no hidden catches, nothing prepared. And certainly, the performance was just meh. Normal scale playing, usual pentatonic stuff, you know. Great playing, for sure, but nothing about that "original-unique-superhuman-mind blowing" stuff that I see on their vids. So, yes, it is increasingly clear for me that it is not the same the regular daily guitar skill/stuff than the one prepared for a vid, lesson or studio song. Thanks again for bring it out!

Tim is one of the absolute best - but he still controls WHAT he plays over; don't forget that. Tim has a killer style with killer melodic sense. And if you listen to enough of him, you start to see similarities between his playing. That takes nothing away from him at all - he's perfected his style, and it's amazing!

I'm no guitar God, but I always thought the guitar Gods just freestyled their solos, and maybe some do, but whenever I tried to freestyle I'd always fall in the trap of trying to play beyond my skill level and end up sounding like an amateur as a result. Irony. I learned to rehearse solos before hand and then commit to doing those solos on stage. It's less flashy and less "spiritual", but it saves me from letting delusion get me stuck in a ditch. And with fewer mistakes, I can use more recordings of my live shows.
@michaelwilson2497
@michaelwilson2497 Жыл бұрын
Ain't nothing wrong with that. I do the same thing to a degree. You can still have a hot night and have the emotional/spiritual experience the way you do it. Only a few of the elite can do the in the spot piss excellence. I take licences with solos of songs. Have for years. I get the basic phrasing of the solo, and play til I keep nailing it. Due to carpel tunnel, I have had to do root chords over spider chords. Is what it is and I ain't gonna stop playing. Helps I have been playing for 35 years.

Without at least of 15-20 minute warm up in like 60-80 bpm, quarter notes I can't play for shit. Even if I manage to play something in 16 in 130 for example, It would be sloppy and would hurt my hand for a couple of days. So for me if somebody can play a diffcult song, no warmup is amazing.

I've seen videos with Steve Vai and John Petrucci admit that they had to practice for hours to nail a part of a song they were writing. They said it sounded easier in their head. Joe Satriani has said you have to practice and play every day. There is a video out of John Petrucci teaching a arpeggio sequence and he admits he messed up trying to play it. The thing is he plays a note that sounds good. He messes up about three times.

One thing to remember is most people won't notice the tiny mistakes you make. Only you do because you know you made the mistake :p. For example I don't think I would've noticed Slash mess up if he just kept playing, improvised and pretended like it was on purpose lol, and sometimes those mistakes can sound cool because you wouldn't have initially thought of playing it like that. Another example is I didn't notice Paul McCartney mess up and yell "fuck" in Hey Jude, but it's there 😂.

Never compared with a guitarrist. Never got pissed off about my playing. I just run modes shapes 2 warm up. Next, just record a backingtrack n' add solo guitar. I use the same beat a lot o times, changing tempo. My relationship with guitar it's peaceful. Am i a good player? No. Did i played a lot? Yes, a lot, for hours n' hours all over the years. So, why do you play man? Just because guitar saved my life n' i have a need 2 play. In this issue i don't even care about the World. It's natural 2 me. But i know what a good guitarist is: some1 who plays in every single note ( go chromatic) without thinkin' and sounds good.

Because if you practice it the right way you're going to simply play it the right way. Is actually harder to learn something wrong and then come back and fix it later than it is to learn it the right way from the start

Yeah, but that’s when you already practiced enough to know them. So you most likely spent weeks to prep already. And if you don’t play it for a long time, like a year or so, but play other stuff, you will again practice for at least a short time to refresh it. (Or in my case relearn it completely). Also, you are a Portnoy, so… :)
