Have to relate to the doctor. I am usually tongue tied in what to do when someone breaks down at the news of being pregnant. Aside from rape, I can't understand the reason, especially after seeing so many woman break down from miscarriages, abnormalities, stillbirths and failed conceptions. These women I usually cry with its heartbreaking 💔

@@onions2569 anyone being unintentional pregnant is likely to be upset even if ultimately they go on to be amazing parents. A 17 yo with dreams and ideas for the future this all the more so. Interestingly i've got less understanding for the woman who breaks down at the news her baby will be disabled than the one devastated to be pregnant. I get it for both but the later when they decided to have a child must have considered that child could be disabled so the news should be less of a shock.

When my grandpa had at-home hospice care due to cancer and was about to pass away, the daytime nurse was getting off and her relief showed up both late and sloppy drunk to work the overnight shift. We had to put the second nurse on the couch (where she proceeded to pass out drunk) and the first nurse stayed with us the entire night so we wouldn't be left alone helpless. She said that that specific situation is why she chose to get into hospice care because she had experienced the same thing in the past. My grandpa happened to pass away that same night and almost 20 years later I still remember that first nurse and am forever thankful for her. (Btw we ended up calling the second nurse's boss that night and got her fired and blacklisted from working in hospice care and they even sent a taxi to pick her up and send her home) I was 9 at the time (28 now) and I still remember this to this day. God bless the good healthcare workers that truly care about their patients and are willing to go above and beyond to help others when needed ❤

@mattrogers6646

Healthcare providers should be careful using nicknames like "my dear" and "sweetheart" when working with patients. For people who have endured abuse, this can be a trigger because the person that caused the abuse used the same terms, it is a painful and unwelcome reminder. Furthermore, it is unprofessional and the burden should not be on the patient to have to say "don't call me that" and worry about coming across as rude or difficult, when you really just don't want to have your skin crawl with thoughts of your abuser. It is unprofessional behavior to call patients anything other than their name, unless you specifically are granted permission, for the above reasons.

There was a nurse that treated my cousin when he was dying of Covid, his name was Kevin. He was so kind, so empathetic, so caring. July of 2020 he stood in the hallway of the Covid unit with my mom and me and just hugged us for what seemed like forever. He went above and beyond communicating with us through all of it. I will never forget Kevin.

The hospitals here allowed ICU patients (covid or not) 1 visitor for 1/2 hour each day. Immediate family only and no one under 18. My husband could not visit his mom because his dad was loosing it and needed that daily 1/2 hour. No one was allowed in the hospital unless they were the actual patient and when I took my child to urgent care the came to the car with a nurse then a doctor would let you in the clinic only if labs or procedures were needed. (Like stitches) You were fortunate to spend so much time within the facility and with your loved one. Sorry for your loss.

For one thing they had to learn all the different ways to do CPR and the Hymlich maneuver to a pregnant woman as well as BY a pregnant woman. Also got to have some hands in with prenatal care and newborn care. Best class to graduate because if all the extra stuff they learned.

I had a resident when I had an ectopic a few months ago that was so patient and kind. As he was going over the surgery risks, what they were likely to find, and what would likely be done, he could tell I was barely holding it together. He stopped and said I could cry if I needed and he would wait until I was ready to move on. He was so reassuring the entire time and despite some of the really scary sounding possibilities, he reminded me this is their job and the staff would take care of me. It was such a scary few hours. My husband and I were actually supposed to drive home from our Thanksgiving vacation that afternoon. We were 15 hours away from home, with two kids, and THANKFULLY his family were all still there and we had the rental house for one more night. I went from “I think I have appendicitis” to “your urine sample shows you’re pregnant” to “it’s ectopic and you have internal bleeding” in a few hours. I was so emotionally spent but that Resident provided such a sense of peace in one of the scariest moments of my life. He’s already such a great doctor, and I wish I could thank him properly. ❤

That definitely is more applicable in hospital settings where doctors truly have very little time to spend in the room with the patient, but nurses are more frequently in and out of the room and there are more opportunities for them to support the patient emotionally while doing things like changing iv bags, neuro checks, bed pans, etc. Its hard not to get more familiar with somebody who’s changing your bed pan. Doctors have also spent considerably more time studying, often to the detriment of their social lives, while they are in training. Don’t be too hard on doctors, they don’t have nearly as many opportunities to engage patients in meaningful ways, and they may not be quite as skilled at it bc of that. In office settings, doctors definitely get more opportunity to talk with patients, and I’ve found the best ones are able to sneak in some helpful social bonding moments during patient visits so that they can better understand and help the patient. Healthcare providers are truly a team, and one couldn’t do their job without the others help.

I had a high risk pregnancy. My first appointment was with a wonderful midwife that followed me halfway through my pregnancy and was an angel at explaining everything with patience, offering support and options. She was replaced, even though I declined, by an obstetrician that was always in a bad mood, didn't explain almost anything to me, talked down at me because I was asking questions and when a problem arose didn't offer me any options. I left the consultation sobbing and a midwife approached me, talked to me because I was distressed and finally appointed me another obstetrician that was really nice. I knew that not everyone is going to be a much for me and/or have the time and patience to explain things through. But, being kind to patients doesn't cost a thing! Even if you are running. And this is coming from a kindergarten teacher, we are always running and there is always an emergency. But being polite with parents and kids has taught me that people remember a lot about how you made them feel when things were awful.

It's probably because your hormone levels are higher as a teenager. Also, they don't face the same detrimental stress issues and health problems adults do. Obviously not every single person is the same so there are people still fertile passed the age range and some younger than the age range too. These numbers are just averages. A few years ago, I had an ectopic pregnancy. At first they told me I was having a miscarriage at the ER. Every doctor I saw just delivered the news and left the room. After a week of monitoring my hcg levels, I was admitted to a different emergency room and until 30 minutes before the surgery to remove my baby, had no idea I even had an ectopic pregnancy or that they were about to perform a surgery. When that nurse came into my room to tell me they were prepping the OR, I had a mental breakdown. I was alone at the ER and I still thought there was a chance I could have my baby. That nurse gave me the most caring supportive hug she could and just held me for about 10 minutes. After I started to calm down and process what was happening, she explained everything to me. I don't know why this made me cry. When I saw the girl start crying I could only imagine myself finding out that same thing and thinking "How would I tell my parents?". Then, the nurse came and tried to help and show the girl that she has options and it was just so heartwarming ❤ Thank you for this vid and I hope you have a great life!

Sometimes, a nurse is who I am more comfortable with. It's... I can't explain it. The nurse is.. more in touch with their patients. They have that deep sense of ... umm... how to deal with the patients emotions. Whether they are male or female ... they are angels!😇🙂 Thank you to all you nurses.

Growing up in Texas this was my BIGGEST fear. "You have options!" Yeah... Either give birth (I'd literally rather die) or throw myself down the longest flight of stairs I can find. You know something's wrong when you start saying around age 11 that you WILL attempt to cease being alive if you ever find out you're pregnant.

There is nothing like an amazing nurse who makes you feel as if you are all that matters and they will help you through whatever it is your dealing with. The nurse I had with my first pregnancy/birth was one of the most amazing women I have ever met. This was 20 years ago and I will never forget the time and energy she spent on me. I was being induced and I had preeclampsia, after waiting over 24 hours for my contractions to even start, I was rushed to the OR for an emergency c-section. At this time my nurses shift had been over 7 hours ago but she stayed with me for the surgery and even for a few hours after surgery while I was in the recovery room. This woman went above and beyond for me because she is that dedicated to her job. So every year since on my child’s birthday I send her a gift and a thank you card for being an incredible human being. Nurses are amazing people.

When I was date raped, i went straight to the hospital for help. I had female nurses and a female doctor, I was 18 explaining to them through tears and ugly sobs what I had experienced. How scared i was to tell my parents. How worried i was that I was pregnant or worse had an STD that would affect me being able to get pregnant later on down the line. I have never had a group of woman band together and care for me mentally like that in my whole life. They talked me through options, and answered every irrational question I had with compassion. I was not pregnant. I did not have any STDs. And I am stronger than I'll ever be mentally thanks to those wonderful doctors and nurses.

I didn't work at the hospital ED for very long, but this reminds me of how one time a doctor approached another doctor and asked "hey, are you good with kids?" The other doctor said yeah and took that patient instead of the first doctor. I was kinda proud of that first doc for recognizing that he wasn't the right one for that particular job. It's so much better that he didn't try and get frustrated or something.

I had a LEGAL abortion in 1972 at the Maricopa Medical Center, Phoenix. The was incorrectly done and part of the fetal tissue wasn't removed. I developed a raging infection and had to go back -- a male doctor with an unearned sense of superiority accused me of having an ILLEGAL abortion -- he couldn't be bothered to read my case file.

I was told to never tell ANYONE "its going to be okay" at the ER. But, I really don't give a flying fuck, sometimes that's exactly what people need to hear. Have empathy!!!!!! And thank you for this video. I am going through something similar and if anyone took the time to tell me they'd at the very least HELP and that things were going to be okay, it would make a huge difference. Being a medical professional isnt always about being "professional", sometimes you have to be warm. Sometimes the people that walk in have NO ONE. Who's going to encourage them if you don't, you know???? Obviously you wouldnt say it to EVERY patient, but the ones that need a little bit of gassing up can really benefit from compliments and reassurance. Idk thats just my two cents 😭

Something similar happened to my mom. A long time ago, she ALWAYS wanted kids. It was her DREAM to be a mother. She got married at 18 and tried every single day to conceive. I mean EVERY DAY, for almost 2 years, with no luck. My mom and dad lost hope. One day, my Mom felt different. My dad didn't want to get their hopes up and asked her to take a pregnancy test at the doctor's. A nurse came back with a positive result, and my mom wailed!! The nurse was worried, saying, "I hope those are happy tears?😱" My mom ugly cried out. "YESS!!! YOU DONT UNDERSTAND!! I TRIED FOR SO LONG!! I HAVE GIVEN UP HOPE!!"
