"Not even with all one’s critical speed is it possible to catch up with Herr Czerny. Had I enemies, I would, in order to destroy them, force them to listen to nothing but music such as this. The insipidity of these variations is really phenomenal." -Robert Schumann, On Music and Musicians (1854); Paul Rosenfeld, trans., Konrad Wolff, ed. (1969)

his music has a lot of adversaries and fewer supporters, and it's easy on first look to see that his music seems... lacking... of spirit, ( not his exercises but his symphonies and more artful compositions ) but we must be careful on criticizing a musical style based on our subjective empiricals, as many in the same basis feel that the music is good, and in the same way musical styles that are recieved positively by the majority... are often found to be tasteless and repetitive and further on to claimed that it is "objectively bad" by the minorities...

@thomasphelmer2657. There are old written sources that do not confirm double beat tempos. The signature «@jorislejeune»: Le Pianiste was a Parisian paper on piano playing and music (from 1833 till 1835) and wrote negatively about Czerny, certainly about the op 299. They complained that ‘all these studies require 800 notes per minute’, which is only true in single beat. (800 notes per minute equals 13.3 per second) The signature @pawncube 2050: In Czerny’s op 740 no 13 he says that the study is for acquiring the utmost possible speed and in it the metronome mark gives roughly 15 notes a second. We understand that double beat tempos in Czerny op 299 are unlikely when a number of children play the exercises faster than the virtuoso Czerny. Here are a few examples among several: Czerny : School of Velocity Op. 299 no.1 Kemruji Songthhumjitti No 3 Kemruji Songthhumjitti Czerny Op. 299 No. 17 by William Zhang (10 Yrs old) Carl Czerny Op.299 No.8 Suppakrit Payackso (Age 8) C. @@thomasphelmer2657kinda does, the entire premise hangs on impossible mm speeds. Just because no one’s spent the time to play them at tempo doesn’t mean they’re impossible.
@thomasphelmer2657
@thomasphelmer2657 Ай бұрын
@@bradleyscarffpiano2921 It's possible to practice the first few Czerny Op. 299 exercises until you can play them double speed. But that doesn't account for the vast number of metronome marks that are so laughably impossible that no serious musician even tries to claim that they're playable. This video does nothing to address the underlying problem

At this speed it is completely unmusical.

@geiryvindeskeland7208 Жыл бұрын
artie360. Whatever the speed, this is an unmusical piece. For where is the beautiful expressive melody? Where do we find the expressive harmonies? And where are the gorgeos modulations? We find none of the aforemenioned. Also, where are all the Italian words that composers use to express emotions and moods? We don’t find any of that either. And why not? Because it is a technical exercise

@geiryvindeskeland7208
@geiryvindeskeland7208 Жыл бұрын
Wkkbooks, slower tempo? No, because then the whole point is gone. Wim Winters, quote: «The best argument FOR the WBMP are the thousands of metronome marks that nobody every will be able to play and we simply ignore.» Because Wim Winters’ disciples believe everything he says, it ‘s imperative that someone play Czerny’s own MM-numbers, which Wim Winters claims is impossible. If Minkyu Kim had played slower than 208, WW’s disciples could triumphantly say» HAHA, he can’t play it fast enough, Wim is right!» Thanks to Minkyu Kim and some others playing Czerny’s own MM-numbers, it confirms that time after time Wim doesn’t know what he is talking about. It is important to preserve the true history of music, that people realize that whole beat theory has never been a reality.

There is the possibility that Czerny was not very musical, that he could play the piano, but not the music. His edition of Bach might support this assessment.

@@Marcymmx Of course, moreover I have read quite a lot about Liszt, some of his writing and accounts from some of his students. Although I have seen accounts where Liszt recognises the discipline Czerny bought to Liszt's technique, I cannot recall anywhere where Liszt praises Czerny's musicianship. It is obvious from Czerny's compositions, including his studies, that he was accomplished, but there are other indications, such as his Bach editions that he might have had important limitations as a musician.
