I once slept in a guest room in a castle for two weeks...I was the only living person sleeping there and the building was a museum at daytime. It was a room in the attic and I had to walk up a creaky wooden staircase, past a galore of grumpy looking portraits. And all the sounds at night (there were many, many sounds) were scaring the hell out of me. I couldn't sleep. Until I remembered how, as a little girl, I used to carry my budgie's cage to my bedroom at night when I was scared, so I'd either genuinely hear him or could tell myself it was him making sounds. So I started playing an audiobook when I went to bed right through the whole night, every night in that castle. That did the trick, I could sleep. 😂
