Okay, so I'm from Brazil and I'll tell you about a plant called Mandioca and Maniçoba history. Maniva is a very poisonous part of the plant called Mandioca, this part need to be cooked for SEVEN (7) FUCKING TIMES to make it safe to eat. Maniçoba is the name of the dish that comes from it (really don't search the name at google, it looks like shit literally). People everytime makes joke about "how much people died until the indigenous people know that they need to cooked it for 7 times". Now that you have another similar joke to use, i can explain a bit about how the Indians learn about the characteristics of this plant after being cooked so many times. They just used it as a poison in their arrows while hunting animals at the jungle. With this experience they tried to make the poison weaker to hunt little animals and so on they start to cook it. At one time they learn that after be cooked X times the poison itself get erased from the equation, because the animals was not affected anymore. And so on they start to experiment it with food and liked the taste.

What's even better is that Holst likes Smoked Meat and Exotic Spices as gifts, but is neutral to Blue Cheese (which, if you don't know, is an aged cheese, which means that it's very slightly rotted, giving it a very strong bitter flavor that is only palatable to some VERY specific tastes). So he clearly has a discerning enough palate to NOT be a fan of a strong/unusual-tasting cheese and to limit his food intakes to stuff that's actually seasoned, especially since he only likes 5 of the Dining Hall dishes (a fairly small number of them)...except he ALSO likes the poorly-prepared Fried Crayfish, and the bitter Cabbage and Herring Stew! Holst's taste buds are all over the place! Does he even ENJOY the mushrooms that he randomly decides to eat, or does he just like challenging himself to find stranger and more dangerous foods by stuffing unusual fungi into his face? Who knows! His food preferences are wild and weird!
