A visit with Native American, Wukchumni basket weavers and teachers, Jennifer Malone and her mother, Maria Wilcox in the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains south of Yosemite. Marie is the last remaining speaker of her original language while Jennifer has been learning Wukchumni to continue the cultural traditions of her tribe. As they collect materials and teach basket weaving to family members and neighboring tribes, Jennifer and Marie inject optimism and humor into cultural revival. The title of the film, When You Return, is taken from the Wukchumni language as Marie explains in the film, “We never had a word for good-bye.
