Oh man, at one point we had a full office of these old Dell monitors. I'm sure they're in a dump by now.

Back in the day, having true 24 bit 800x600 and 1024x768 was the bomb, and 1280x1024 was just **vast**. But in today's era of 4k, meh.... the old modes are the thing now.

my Xsurf is in the top slot, video card is bottom, ram card in slot 2 like you. Amiga has Zero memory protection so a program just says hi i need ram, amiga says , ok here you go. but dont check if anything else is occupying the ram space.

Ah ha! Yup, got it now. Thank you again!

yes, the lack of memory protection became later a problem... The OS made no use of a MMU like in the 040 or 060.

Unless I am massively mistaken none of what is being said here is correct. The OS does have memory allocation and checking (improved in OS2 onward) and unless a program ignores those through poor programming that memory should not be able to be just overwritten. Writing a game that boots from the disk is OK to ignore memory allocation, but if you have games and applications that run in the OS then using the OS for memory allocation seems prudent. Lets ask Apple what their attitude was towards using an MMU for memory protection....... OSX (1999) and from what I have read they seems to have done OKish ;-) You know Windows up to XP SP3 (even after but to a lesser extent) was a memory sieve leaking and overwriting every and anywhere, and that was the OS let alone the programs that people ran. How sure are we it's not either a buster timing issue (what with memory timing being finicky) or just that the slot is far enough away the slot signal is the issue? I ask as I have had an issue running my PC, 7950X with DDR5 - 6400. With one stick closest to the CPU not a problem, but when I have two sticks I get sudden resets. After speaking with Gigabyte and a lot of testing this is not uncommon even though it's half an inch between the slots, I just need to lower the memory timing.

If you allocate memory legally using AllocMem/AllocVec and you stick to the area allocated to you, you would never stomp on another program's memory. A runaway pointer can of course still do that because there's no MMU enforcement. What might be happening here is that there's some signalling or interference issue with the memory card placed in the upper slot that are causing corrupted reads and writes.

Picasso IV is a nice card. Even with ZZ, I wish someone would do a RePIV in purple and black. I'd buy one or two cards. Autoconfig or Plug & Pray. Amiga its an adventure every time you power up or install software.

That is….FOR SURE.

But it was usually easy to fix if something didn't work, unlike '90s peecees.

you're way too nostalgic for HAM8 lol yes- but RTG has issues fo sure. GBA-PII+ card has been much more reliable than a (now dead) retina, and new old PicII. Its really too bad newer fpga solutions don't incorporate built in 4Mb RTG!
