From a "Hollywood a Go-Go" episode (#24?) taped in Los Angeles in 1965. It was her third appearance on that show. The shirt Jackie is wearing was given her by John Lennon after she admired it on him. If you don't know, Jackie toured with the Beatles on their first US tour the year before this appearance. In fact, George Harrison admired the opening riff of this tune so much that he mimicked it in the opening of Ticket to Ride... :)

Back in the 1960s Liverpool I purchased two records of a Cunard Sailor who was doing the New York run to Liverpool. This record was one and the other was "do you love me " by the Contours, at that time we young Liverpudlians had not heard this type of music before. Still have both records' and play them just for the music and memories.

I had no idea this version or lady even existed. Of course in 1964 I was a mere 6 years old! I never listened to any kind of music, other than gospel (my dad was a pentecostal preacher) until I was about 16 and then it was country. I never heard anything other than that until I was about 19, then it was what we'd call classic rock today. I remember starting to watch MTV a few years after I had married. It was around 1985 that my late husband and I discovered it. I have to say....(don't shoot me, everyone has an opinion) I like Pam Tillis's version better but probably only because that was all I knew or heard until today. Someone commented on Pam's video so I came to take a look. She's cute and does a terrific job. I'd just never heard of her.

An early example is "SHOCK RADIO" lead by the glorification of GUYS like Howard (say anything) Stern. The only thing I would add to your comment is - DON'T be so hard on the "GIRLS"... As I see it, all your negative observations about 'young women' ALSO very much apply to 'young men'. I agree that tattoos and butt cracks are ugly, but 60s women were *not* liberated. Growing up female in the 60s, my career prospects were pretty bleak: teacher, nurse, secretary, cashier, actress, singer, and housewife. For taller girls, stewardess and model were on the list. The women’s lib movement changed all that. Because of it, today’s girls can be anything they want to be.

Cool song. My favorite part is right at the beginning, when she starts lip synching a measure too soon, the look on her face is priceless. If y'all haven't heard Agnetha Falkskog's (ABBA) version, check it out. Lot of great covers out there, but I keep coming back to the original.

Exceptionally well written and cleverly devised piece of popular music. We have Jackie Deshannon to thank for writing this observation of the thrills and traumas of infatuation. I particularly like the way the hook creeps up on you after several fairly innocent sounding bars of melody and then BANG, - the logic of the song is suddenly revealed in all its pyrotechnic glory!

We had this song covered by a brit band back in the day as were many other american releases in the early to mid '60s. Never heard the original recordings from the US on our radios or many of the great black artists at that time like Chuck Berry.
