7:08 Those are actually based on real sculptures by the artist Honoré Fragonard. They are in a Musume called Musée Fragonard d'Alfort in southeast Paris. The story behind the one sitting on the horse is said to be his girlfriend who passed away due to illness. He didn't want to bury her, so he skinned her, and her horse, and preserved the muscles in some kind of wax or varnish. For comparison, it's like a French version of the Mutter Museum Philadelphia. Bonus fun fact! Vannacutt is played by Jeffrey Combs. Aka Herbert West from the Re-Animator series.

The museum was featured on an episode of Mysteries at the Musume. It was after watching that episode that I thought back to the director's commentary for this movie. Again, that is just the legend behind the rider and its horse. The whole place is a French version of the Mutter Museum.

I actually do like in the end how Price, while being a bit of a rich prick, did legitimately have a heart and actively cared about the other folks trapped in his little manor prank. He even showed actual worry for Evelyn when she was in danger despite her actively despising him and trying to frame him for murder to get his millions. Kinda makes me feel bad that the post-credits scene shows him along with Evelyn now being horribly tortured by the vengeful spirits of the asylum for all eternity. Seems like way too brutal of a punishment for a character who didn't deserve it.

You know, 1999 was a fun year. Y2K was still a big fear. We got a new Star Wars movie, a better Matrix movie that Will Smith passed on to do a terrible Wild Wild West movie that same year, we got a new Resident Evil game, the WWF was unstoppable and Samuel L Jackson got eaten by a shark. As for this movie, I remember it being weird to see Chris Kattan in a serious role. If I'm being honest, he's no Jim Carrey or Robin Williams in terms of being both a great comedic and dramatic actor. Other than that, I remember this and Thirteen Ghosts having a similar feel to it. As far as the original, I only remember the ending being a bit creepy. My parents thought it was scary, but I'm also someone who thought The Exorcist was hilarious while they were terrified of it.

Fun fact: calling magazines "clips" started with WWII vets, who typically used the M1 Garand (which uses clips). After the war, they continued using "clip" to refer to the bit that holds the bullets since that's what they learned to call it. WWII films also helped spread the misnomer by showing soldiers referring to clips to the general population.

My sister and I try to watch it every Halloween, so that's a spot on observation. (Surprisingly hard to find on stream-I just need to buy it on physical media but I digress.) Although, I don't know if that's a great promotion since one of our bonding activities is watching *bad* horror movies haha. I had such a a crush on Pratchett 😅. House on Haunted Hill so bad and cheesy but there's just something so... charismatic about it, the scares typically fall flat but there are few genuinely scary moments. The editing was so ridiculous in the best way. Acting isn't great but it feels enthusiastic and I think they could have pushed the campy just a smiiiidge more. The delivery of some of the jokes are great "IM ADOPTED'' This movie truly feels like watching a time capsule of late 90s paranormal horror and will always old a special place in my heart!
