Do you have students that seem to give up quickly? Some get frustrated, others shut down, and others just ask for help over and over.
Here’s a brain-based perspective: Often the students who look like they’re not persevering are simply overwhelmed by challenges that are outside of their window of stress tolerance.
A students’ ability to tolerate stress is impacted by things such as past trauma, current difficulties, mental health challenges, and other factors like the presence or absence of relational supports and resources.
A great way to decrease academic stress is breaking the material down into smaller chunks. Instead of a page with ten math problems, give the student a sheet that has three math problems, then encourage them when they finish it and provide the next three problems.
