Transcription of Eli Sullivans solo on Solid Old Man by Duke Ellington. Played by Roosevelt High School at Essentially Ellington 2019, all the solos were incredible, but I just couldn't get past the tone of the soprano player, Eli. In the future I might come back and transcribe some of the other solos. I hope you enjoy the transcription!

Personally I dont like his rideplaying but maybe I'm not enough familiar with big band playing... I mean one good advice with ride is to think about how you say walk the dog, walk the dog etc. In my opinion his skipnotes are too tight together the first could give a litle bit more space to the second skipnote. But maybe that's just me

People in the comments are debating whether they are from affluent families or not to determine if their playing is "justified" by practice. They forget that these people meet at competitions time and time again, so not only do they dedicate a ton of time, but they are exposed to the absolute best of their field and category for many years. He's seen his direct competition play closely and that also exposes them to different learning experiences. Ten, twenty years go by and then they dominate, and people only think "oh they're from money so they paid for classes". The dedication they have is at the top.

I’m not sure what you mean, but maybe you’re referring to what I think people call “slides” or “glissandos”? Like when the soloist moves through a series of notes really quickly and they’re all melded together. The most famous example being the clarinet glissando at the beginning of Rhapsody in Blue. That one is longer, but same sort of thing.
