I remember being a teenager in 1988, we were very poor and they were about to shut off our electric. I heard this for the first time then while standing in our driveway and just being overcome by the feelings of hope and joy this song gave me. Almost 35 years later and it's still possibly my favorite song ever

I heard it a couple of days ago while on my 50 mile motorcycle ride to work. I leave at 4:30 AM, so there's hardly any traffic to keep me company as I roll through the woods and farmland . At 71 and and looking at retirement on Dec.31, I'm looking at my twilight years and I tend to reflect a lot anymore. The memories are like swift flowing water going under a bridge. I really like this song and always have. It speaks to all ages. P.S. I decided to give them another year. I know I can make it. Put one foot in front of the other and make it to lunchtime every day, and the rest of the day is downhill. 😀 I think I have 208 working days left. Thanks for all of your good wishes.

If you need a friend Don't look to a stranger You know in the end I'll always be there And when you're in doubt And when you're in danger Take a look all around And I'll be there I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me (I promise you) I promise, I promise you, I will When your day is through And so is your temper You know what to do I'm gonna always be there Sometimes if I shout It's not what's intended These words just come out With no cross to bear I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me (I promise you) I promise, I promise you I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) And if I had to walk the world I'd make you fall for me I promise you, I promise you I will Gotta tell you Need to tell you Gotta tell you I've gotta tell you I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me (I promise you) I promise, I promise you I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) And if I had to walk the world I'd make you fall for me I promise you, I promise you I will I will, I will

I had just graduated HS in 1988…..I worked some odd jobs, had some girlfriends, had no direction and owned a 1980 Fiat Spyder convertible (a terrible/awesome car). On those summer nights when it was warm and clear I’d play this song on my cassette as loud as I could with the top down and my mullet in a pony-tail to keep it out of my face to decompress from what I thought was stress back then….it was like a magic song that melted away all my fears, insecurities, and worries all at once as I sang along out loud….it was just me and the world at that moment, a feeling which I wish I could have kept in a bottle for when I needed it….

Beautiful John!! My name is John and I was 20 in 1980 and the songs became so heartfelt and love the that the kids are getting into our era!!! I noticed the direction of all the songs that were so great ! One comment from a young girl that didn’t grow up in the 80s said she felt the younger people were missing out! They are!! She tears swelled up in her eyes when the chorus came!

I've sang this song a million times, in my head, to my relationships, and my commitments. Just now, I realized, this is not only a love song, it's a family, commitment song. My dad was diagnosed with cancer, had the tumor removed, plastic surgery to repair the gapping hole... As I think about the last 6 weeks, wiping ass, cleaning bed pans and urinals of my 82 y/o dad, thinking about the cycle of life, I understand completely and believe totally in the promise, a promise, and the cycle of life. xoxo all.

Although it had that bittersweet feel - beautiful but meloncholic - even when it was first out, and current, as with a number of other Bittersweet songs during & from the 80’s, including “Forever Young” by Alphavlle, and “Time After Time” (Cindi Lauper), and so many other Greats.

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was about 17 or 18. I loved 80s music growing up and still love it. At the time my parents had just got separated and I was couch surfing with my mom. We ended up living with my godmother, and I became really close with her two kids. I remember at the time I just felt so empty inside, like an outcast at school, anxiety ridden all the time. I was sitting in my 2001 Subaru outback smoking a cigarette at night- literally feeling just dead inside. Then- this song. This some came on and some part of my soul just ignited- causing a chain reaction throughout my body. This feeling of hope and joy multiplied seemingly endlessly. I instantly learned the words and listened to it again and again. This song reminds me of that time in life- where I’d just sit outside in the summer and paint even tho I was depressed- and processing so much. I don’t talk to my godmother or her two kids anymore. Me and my best friend at the time who was there through it all don’t talk anymore. But i love this song and I always will. And it will always remind me of that carefree yet challenging time in my life- where my sweet escape was old school music, getting drunk, dancing, smoking cigarettes, and making art.

@@DeE-pt5lz You are absolutely correct. I can elaborate more on what you are saying with the 1980’s were the height of Western Civilization. The 1990’s was a decent, but flawed “Part II” and the 2000’s was a “Part III” where the writers didn’t bother to acquaint themselves with the source material. I compare it to the three “Smokey and the Bandit” movies. The first one was a brilliant and fun adventure movie. The second one was a movie that was decent, but couldn’t decide if it was a comedy or an adventure movie. And the third came into existence after someone heard about the first two movies from a drunken hobo that was living in a dumpster.

Lyrics: If you need a friend Don't look to a stranger You know in the end I'll always be there And when you're in doubt And when you're in danger Take a look all around And I'll be there I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me (I promise you) I promise, I promise you, I will When your day is through And so is your temper You know what to do I'm gonna always be there Sometimes if I shout It's not what's intended These words just come out With no cross to bear I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me (I promise you) I promise, I promise you I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) And if I had to walk the world I'd make you fall for me I promise you, I promise you I will Gotta tell you Need to tell you Gotta tell you I've gotta tell you I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me (I promise you) I promise, I promise you I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say (I promise you) I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be (I promise you) And if I had to walk the world I'd make you fall for me I promise you, I promise you I will

I haven't been able to stop thinking about this song recently. One of my best friends randomly decided that he didn't want to be my friend anymore. It leaves a hole in me that I can't seem to fill. What's worse is my other best friend is emotionally tortured by the separation of his 2 best friends, and it hurts me to see him like that. He has anxiety, and it makes me want to cry every time I think about the harm he has gone through because of me. I wish we could just go back to our childhood, when these sorts of dumb things didn't matter, When everyone was friends. Why can't we just go back?
