Player of Helldivers 1 here. According to the cyborg lore, their goal was to become machines and they mechanised their body's piece by piece as much as they could. Since Helldivers 2 plays 100 years after the galactic wars of Helldivers 1, they have surely evolved their technology to the point that they had turned their minds into machines too, removing the need for human parts. Another supporting factor for this is that all the enemy unit concepts for the Automatons have exact Cyborg counterparts.

This is the most widely accepted story since both games have evidence to support this. The exact origin of the Automatons is unknown, but according to the wiki they are created/descended from the cyborgs and their current plan is to reach Cyberstan to free the Cyborgs, which I assume we'll get in an event in the future. Similarly, we are currently trying to activate a network to push back the Terminids, and doing so would supposedly attract the attention of the Illuminate, also from the first game.

For real. I thought it was obvious that the Automatons *are* the Cyborgs. Super Earth propaganda tells us that they are just unfeeling inhuman machines so that we don't feel remorse for killing them but in reality each is a human being that has replaced most of his physical body with cybernetics. That's why the more rank and file have more humanoid anatomy and why they still die to headshots. They even have a Brasch Tactics segment about "hyper-reactive subroutines" to explain why robots would be suppressed when getting shot at.

My theory is the Automatons were a more extreme subfaction of the Cyborgs. After the Cyborgs lost the first war the Automatons became the leading faction and replaced the Cyborgs by socially pressuring Cyborgs into forsaking their humanity entirely. Instead they have fully mechanical bodies.

I have always thought the two factions fought before were in hiding after losing the previous Galactic War. The Cyborgs, in this case, made the Automatons to fight us while they plan their return.

Cyborgs are in the mines of their home world and have been for a hundred years being 'rehabilitated'. The binary message released and translated from the helldivers 2 twitter before the game launch has the cyborgs saying their children, the automatons will not be oppressed. So my guess is that the cyborgs knew they weren't strong enough nearing the end of the war to beat Super Earth and began creating their 'children' with the tools they believed they'd need to maintain the freedom they themselves were about to lose.

I think the Cyborgs and the Illuminates in a last ditch effort before they were wiped out in the first game built the automotons. If you remember Cyberstan was the home for Cyborgs. It is now controlled by Super Earth and you can actively find it as a playable location in Helldivers 2. So saying the Automatons are the Cyborgs or a variant of them is the closest to “correct” theory without some major story stuff happening and explaining more.

I've noticed that the automatons were trying to conquer the sectors on the top left of the galactic map rather than pushing towards super earth. I think that is because they are trying to take back planet "Cyberstan" wich was their mother planet back in helldivers 1 and was already under super earth control here in h2 since the game launched. It's just my theory obviously but for me it makes sense, the robots were pretty passive compared to the terminids, maybe they are trying to retake cyberstan and rebuild a fearfull army.

I believe that at the last second before the cyborgs lost the war they decided to send a small group of people far way to evolve and fully mechanize themselves so they could eventually return and free the cyborgs. This also explains why in one message from the automatons it says that even if super earth loses the fight the automatons will leave them alone and just go to cyberstan which is the cyborgs home. In another message one automatons trooper wishes he had other senses then just sight and sound and wants to feel smell and taste the sun which makes sense since it’s been so long that they probably forgot what those other senses are like. The sad truth is that they were forced to fully mechanize themselves which made them stronger at the cost of taking away their senses

The hulk is based off of the redemptor dreadnaught from Warhammer 40K, and the way those work is in the center, the face plate with the glowing eye, is a steel sarcophagus, basically a walking tomb controlled by a dormant mind, that could be the cyborg.

One of the people (ai bots) on my ship said “the cyborgs work in the mines now maybe the automitans will to once we defeat them” that’s pretty close to what they said might have changed phrases a little by accident

Still relatively new to Helldiver’s lore, but as it stands and has been stated quite a few times in the comments: Both the Democracy Officer and the Service Technician state that the cyborgs are in the mines of Cyberstan undergoing rehabilitation. As for their origin it would not be far off to assume that they were created by the cyborgs, whether it was a last ditch effort or an excuse by Super Earth to get into another war (because why not?). I would thoroughly love to see the cyborgs return only to repeat the cycle again. But that is if the Automatons end up taking Cyberstan, though that wont be too long since everyone is focusing on the bugs since we are a bit under prepared to defend against Automatons at this time. Looking forward to the new armaments.

My favorite theory I’ve heard is that the cyborgs are on cyber Stan working in the mines for rehabilitation but the war factory’s of the cyborgs remained online. And that the factory’s now without out any humans to turn into cyborgs have improved and altered the cyborgs machine body’s to be completely run by machines, which explains why the automatons have a humanoid appearance and human like features (like the skull shaped heads). They’re using the same machine body’s as the cyborgs but instead of them being controlled by a human it’s internals is completely machine.

Or, the helldivers and super earth command have just stopped giving a shit about differentiating between cyborgs and automatons and lumped them together. I mean, their methods and goals seem to line up pretty closely. And they function largely the same.

There's plenty concrete from day 1 of launch. In game dialogue tells us blatantly that the cyborgs are being re-educated in the mines of Cyberstan ever since we captured it in the First Galactic War. The automotons patrol chant can be translated from the heavily voice modded stuff you hear to find they're chanting about freeing Cyberstan. This tells us the automotons are connected to the Cyborgs, we're just not sure exactly how

I've just assumed the Automatons are just the army of of the cyborgs, rather than any sort of replacement.

Cyborgs and squids surely will be new races to join later on. Nids and automatons are just the races humans happen to be using for Ressource and Labor.

there is a tweet from the helldivers page from 2021 in binary code, translated it stated "our sons the automatons won't suffer like we suffered under super earth" so my guess is this is the new cyborg forces but they are still alive out there and if they really turned 100% machine they are sentient, unlike automatons

Cyberstan is a planet you can find in the northern section of the galactic map. This is the cyborgs homeworld
