"Master the fundamentals." Tim Duncan got clowned his entire career for it. 🤷🏽♂️ Fundamentals has to be appreciated from the top down and it just isn't. Hayward is actually a prime example of skills and fundamentals, same with Kahwi, just very precise and concise and methodical. The game would benefit greatly from a change or shift to a more skill based style of play in my opinion.
@jasonb975 жыл бұрын
Fundamentals alone don't guarantee a great career... NBA is a jungle... If you want to survive you also have to be an animal... Fundamentals are great, look at Hayward, Wiggins and Jokic... Then you need athleticism, look at Giannis, Davis and Simmons... And then you have to have a killer instinct, look at LeBron, Durant and Kawhi... Those who can master and handle all of them for their whole career they're the best players of all time... Like Jordan, Kareem, Magic, Bird, Hakeem, Kobe, Duncan and LeBron...

The one thing that he could improve is his defense but not by much. The one thing you cant teach is the one thing missing from his game. Athleticism.

He overpowers many "athletic" players due to his core strength. If he gets you on his shoulders, it's over for you. He's gonna cook you. You can't score the way he's doing without having athleticism. That was a basic history lesson in Canadian schools. Just like: the Irish, Portuguese, Spanish, Boot Italians, Greeks, Bulgarians, the Polish, Ukrainians, the Baltic nations, and Russians *NEVER being White People* according to other Europeans. It was only post-WW2, that those groups started calling themselves White, and no European wanted to have that argument again after the Nazis. I think his theory is spot on. I definitely was a huge emphasis on athleticism in NBA drafting. And also on drafting high school prospects after KG/Kobe/Lebron etc. "Who cares that he doesn't have a jump shot or a post game? We can teach him that later!" Turns out that it's actually difficult to teach 19/20 yr olds fundamental skills when they've already made it to the NBA. A players can dominate in high school and college because he is simply more athletic than everyone else. But when you get to the NBA, everyone is insanely athletic and everyone has insane skills too. Hopefully there is a shift in prioritizing skills over athleticism at all level of basketball. We've sort of seen it with everyone shooting 3s now as shooting is a skill but it's just one of many fundamental skills that players should master.

American great white player in America is nearly impossible because American white/black coaches prefer athletic black players. If Luka and Jokic grew up in America, they would be overshadowed by athletic blacks. They would not get playing time nor would their skills be honed. American basketball system is not known for developing skills. No one in America thought he could play. People were prejudiced towards Luka ability based on his color and lack of athleticism. If this prejudice existed for an elite white player how much worse for a slow white kid.

Jack The Clipper Actually a lot of us were. I started on my high school. Freshman year. The next year the first day of practice the coach picked the team based off of our athleticism without ever seeing us play. He said he needed the most athletic team and that he would teach them to play. I’m not saying he didn’t have a point, and I went to a mostly white school so my athleticism is dreadful. I’m just saying that I know many places where they strictly based the teams off of who was the most athletic, and skilled players without the same athleticism didn’t have a chance. I’m not saying it has to do with color, but a lot of coaches are obsessed with athleticism. This was a while ago so I’m not saying it still happens, but it has in the past.

Very interesting discussion to hear since I am a white american who has played a lot of basketball. I am american but my ethnicity is Slovenian so I am happy to see Luka taking the league by storm. You don't have to be crazy fast for basketball its all about changing speeds and getting people off balance.

You're right. I was the same way. I am 6'7 averaged 23 & 10, had a nice shot. I got offers from Juco, D3, and ultimately took a D2 scholarship. My ethnicity is British/German. Coaches would often simply assume the black players were better, based on athleticism.

Main difference is this. European players grow up without being told that they "Aren't as good" as the equivalent black basketball players. White Europeans grow up playing with all the confidence in the world and that results in them feeling like they can go up against and beat literally anybody. They are the first options in their teams since high school basketball to pros and that naturally will result in the talented players becoming truly elite. There will only be a bigger influx of White European talent in the coming years the more basketball grows in Europe.
@jessebrown85744 жыл бұрын
Yes.yes.yes.that is it... The American white players lack confidence.. So when the athleticism increases as they go up the ranks from high school to college to pro..they get mentally defeated and perform below their ACTUALL potential.. And then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy that they can't cut it.. And as the pool begins to thin out .. The up and coming players ddon't have any players to look up to or to have some real life examples that ..yes white players can play and lead a team or be a star...confidence in yourself or lack thereof is what separates average from good, good from great... So here’s what I’ve noticed in our schools. Around maybe 7-9 grades the black kids start growing faster earlier. When you’re a white kid in 8th grade trying to play ball, and the black kids of the same age are already dunking like crazy, it’s kinda discouraging. I see a lot of white kids quit around that age. I think it’s just a fact of giving up early.
@tommyrex66482 жыл бұрын
Definitely. Well, in the US, there built up a "White Men Can't Jump" kind of stereotype, and I think so many young white men in the US grow up believing they can't be as good as black players because of that mentality. They already assume in their heads (not all, but many white Americans) that they can't compete, so like you said, they kind of quit.

As a black man I too would like to see more white stars in the NBA. I think it would make the game more diverse and interesting. However, I also think it would actually back fire on black NBA players. We've seen the comments Mark Cuban has made in the past. I think if you add more white stars those types of thoughts and possibly comments will pop up a lot more often. White stars maybe more loyal to a city or team and not be so optimistic about testing the free agent market. White stars may often take haircuts on contracts because of their stable financial upbringing and not feeling the need to carry the financial burden for an entire community and nation of people. They may not pass the eye test but ultimately have better analytics, due to shot selection, avoiding over dribbling or ISO ball, and understanding their limitations and playing to their strengths consistently. Which ultimately will lead to better role players, better team support, a lot less stress from media to win now and be better than Mike or Kobe or whomever. Lastly, white stars would receive more appreciation from fans because of the factors listed above and because of human nature. I think these will be some of the stereotypes and comparison used for white stars against black NBA stars, which will be unfair but that unfairness will go "unseen" by most.. With that said, it would make the game a tab bit more interesting for the average consumer and most likely improve the TV ratings and NBA Vaule.

maybe it has to do with cultural parenting. white american parents aren't pushing their kids to play basketball growing up. maybe their parents push them towards tennis, baseball, soccer, swimming, water polo. , skateboarding, xtreme sports, i dono lol etc. growing up whereas black parents tend to push their kids into basketball and football. not sure but this is just an assumption but I honestly think it has to do with culture. Also, I think it has to do with genetics too. Basketball is the most popular sport in China and a lot of European countries but the league is still mostly black. But each NBA team probably only has 1-2 european players. The reality that people don't like to admit/talk about is that african americans just have better genetics for sports. It's the truth , you can work as hard as you want but you can't change your genetics. There has never been a white Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant , Lebron James, Kevin Garnett, Shaq, etc. All the best players with the best athleticism are usually always black and that is due to genetics. even the best European players in the NBA never had the same athleticism of african american players

I totally agree with this. Even today, scouts and coaches are caught up in jumping ability and speed. Blacks dominate in those areas and so good white players are benched for the black kid that can dunk. Its a shame.

Kyle Bertrim Matthews is an exception. Most American players are from Mass, Michigan, upstate NY, Chicago etc

@@anthonychrisbradley and Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri. The fact as I said that players are starting to come up from outside those areas is big. Add that to the fact alot more Americans are becoming top end talent then every before shows it's clearly growing in popularity that fact is undeniable. Whether it's the reason white kids in the states aren't playing basketball that's an opinion not fact.

@@kylebertrim9146 matthews is insanely overrated lmfao, kane is far better as a US born player and he's from NY. Matthews is a strong exception and arizona is one of the few areas with a solid developmental system.

Imma up their statement. How about they ask *Where are the American Basketball Players?* If you rank top 20 players, majority of it are international players: Doncic, Porzingiz, Giannis, Jokic, Murray, Embiid, Simmons, Horford, Irving, Vucevic, Gobert & Siakam. Other talents such as Capela, Bogdanovic, Ayton, Shroder, Wiggins, Rubio and the list goes on... Where are the good American players???

We got some white guys on the rise! Not sure if they’ll be “Stars”, but I think some have “Star” potential. Luke Kennard, Tyler Herro, Kevin Huerter, Joe Harris and Donte DiVincenzo
@rickwatts81305 жыл бұрын
Luke Kennard is the real deal - He will make an All Star team, Herro will get better but he's a lengthy shooter who refuses to defend. Huerter may pop but he has to adjust to being an NBA player - Harris and DiVincenzo are solid role guys with 10 year careers. The NBA game definitely needs some American white stars - it just makes the sport better if fan bases feel represented. It's not a "racists thing" but it is a "racial thing" and when people can see themselves in the product it makes it better for all fans. Now I think the NBA should be putting camps/clinics/academies in poor white neighborhoods where people will actually work hard and dig out a few diamonds. And I also think the NBA should be working to make the executives/front offices/owners be representative of the product on the floor. You can't tell me that black players can't coach and select talent when they are the ones playing the game at the highest levels.

@Zombie JesusRace isn't a biological classification. It's a social construct. That's why people like Italians, Irishmen, and European Jews who weren't considered white in the 1700's, are considered white today. Their biology didn't change. Society did. If Chris was alive in 1800 he could have been bought and sold just like the rest of us. Until Chris can walk into a KKK meeting and sit down without getting confused looks, he's black as far as I'm concerned.
