The answer is pretty straightforward: incompetence and corruption. They are incapable of overcoming design flaws and developement has dragged on indefinitely. And their connections ensure that the project will not be killed despite making zero meaningful progress in years. Edit: Damn there is quite the war going on the replies. The obvious comparisons are to the F22 and the F35 but are just comparing apples to oranges. Both projects dragged on for far too long and cost far too much, but in the end a weapon was delivered. The USA has the money to force a program to completion, the Russians do not. Why? Incompetance and Corruption.

@icyknightmare4592
@icyknightmare4592 Жыл бұрын
A hover tank worthy of the name would still produce a lot of ground vibration from the lift fans/jets, and it would still be made of metal. Anti tank mines with magnetic or seismic trigger mechanisms would probably work against it. The armor would also have to be quite thin since by necessity a hover tank would have to be substantially lighter than a modern MBT.

@JoeBLOWFHB I also noticed that, yet: if the turret points rearwards, the gun can not be leveled horizontally or aimed lower, so if an enemy (tank) is behind you, you can not shoot it. Seems strange.

It is the same problem that Ukraine has to overcome when dealing with so many varieties of western tanks. Tanks are very maintenance heavy, and you need to keep a unique logistics system in place for each type of tank. It would be nearly impossible for Russia to keep a maintenance system in place for T14s on the southern front, just not worth it for so few tanks.

Its the same reason you don't see any Abrams and Challenger tanks field by the UAF right now: they're too valuable to be captured and it looks bad if they're destroyed. We all know now that any tank can be easily destroyed by artillery and drones so it's not really a priority to get the most high tech tank out onot the field. Its much more efficient for the factory to upgrade their current t72 and t90 tanks to modernized varients with better optics and systems.

Basically they make prototypes for tests (mostly industrial tests and state engineers). Then modified pre-serial models for state tests, these models are used by state specialists such as engineers and test crews (you can find pics comparing the prototype to the serial models on the net). Then serie models that this times are sent to live units to be tested by them, and only after being tested by live units, and not only test units, the last small modification will be made and the real production will start. State tests in live units are deemed to end this summer and production should officially start at the end of this year, after the last modifications are being made, from what i kown. I think most countries work the exact same way: - prototype phase mostly to present the concept and test new tech - pre serie to make more extensive and complete tests, with a vehicule close to the serialized one - first back to be tested by live units before the serial production start I know it was the same for Abrams and Leclerc.

Pretty sure they simply can not start production without a big foreign sale first. And that was before the war, now they probably couldn't get most technology in big enough numbers to start production even if they wanted to. And who is going to buy these armata's in a decent number? I don't think we will ever see this thing in service anywhere.

The problem is that this is Russia we are talking about. They follow the same process of mockups, prototyping, and then production, except for that final production state. They are already flaunting their new "superweapons" pretty much the instant it can move under it's own power. They paraded their T-14s right through Moscow and were celebrating it for being innovative. They were going to build 2000 of them by 2020 and everyone would know the true power of Russia. It's now 2023 and it's still in testing and trials, and also entered production for about the 5th time now. The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV was going to replace the 2S19 in 2016. They built their initial dozen and now it's in the "testing until the heat death of the universe" phase. Su-57 was supposed to be the foundation of the new and modern Russian air force with 52 production units by 2020 and 150 more by 2025 with hundreds of export units too boot. It's now 2023 and Russia has about a dozen (at least a few of which are prototypes retrofitted to being production level) and are churning them out at 3-4 units a year. This isn't even close to a recent thing too. The T-90 was supposed to be the foundation for a new Russian armored force (despite being a rebranded variant of the T-72). They built a few hundred for themselves and more than a thousand for export. Unless there is foreign demand for a Russian product, or it is bankrolled by a foreign country, every new super weapon Russia builds falls flat on it's face.

@bobbman3000 for what it's worth Budget has been the main issue the t90 was canceled for the t72b3 program it was argued it was cheaper and would offer similar capabilities vs the t90a so RU procurement suggested it be canceled for the t72b3 program as it was too expensive RU is stingy about costs more then anything and the main issue within that is that the procurement ideas with the Russian military is that it if it's still "modern" it's still good

@@baronvonlimbourgh1716 From what i know and we can see they can. They already produced 18 prototypes that were shown at the 2015 parade, plus at least 20 pre-serial ones for state tests, that we have seen quite a while in the past months. In fact if they can't produce some more right now, it's most probably because their factory assembly lines are being taken by current war production orders. And T-14 are not a priority for this war. And because its production should not start before the end of the year anyway, since the state tests plus last modifications are not done by now.

One aspect missed: Sanctions. For example if I am not mistaken the sights, night-vision cameras etc. of the T-14 were bought from Thales. Thales is however a French company. Due to sanctions Thales no longer supplies Russia and that leaves the T-14 without vital equipment. This is probably the case for more parts especially anything related to computing power. Russia can't really build T-14 completely independently and is reliant on foreign suppliers. I think there was a mishap that proved that no T-14 has been build since the prototypes. There was photo which showed the plant with a T-14 on an assembly ramp and then there was a video documentary that accidentally showed the same spot of the factory with the exact same tank still being there a year later or so...

Regarding those old T-55 tanks that have been sent I have a theory about that. What do you do if you need something with a bit more oomph than your IFVs and APCs can provide but don't really need a full on MBT? Well, let's imagine you have thousands of old tanks that have no realistic way of ever filling their original role rotting away in storage facilities. 1. They don't have "thousands". 2. They still need refurbishing and overhauls. It doesn't free up modern equipment, it robs time and resources from the modern equipment. 3. If you don't "need a full on MBT" but drive what is identified as a MBT into a battle you will be targeted as if you were a "full on MBT". There's a multitude of reasons why you wouldn't send them. The reason why they're doing it simple - they have no choice.

Heard those engines? In that clip of the propaganda bit they put out, at 05:00, about the tanks crossing the border into Luhansk (LOL!), even on flat ground, the thing sounded like it was climbing a steep grade. I read that the engine is a modification of one originally designed for industrial pumps and it sounds like it.

I think the obvious and painless answer is - they simply don't exist in the numbers and or at the quality Russia wants us to imagine they do, likely both. Nothing else makes rational sense - Russia's been being pushed back and taking hideous causalities ever since they failed to take Kyiv, why would you keep holding your best stuff in reserve? So, to misquote Lazerpig "you have never seen more than 8 T-14s in one photograph, therefore Russia has 8 T-14s"

the engine is from a porsche tiger tank. which was known for its unreliability. then in russia it was converted to pumping oil or gas, it did not make a career. the russians made a tank around an engine that breaks down it's an engine from a ww2 tank converted to a pump engine becoming more unreliable and then they reworked it to be in the tank.... and now the russians are wondering how to fix this engine because they can't replace it engine (for example, the engine used in other tanks from the t-34 model to the t72 tanks in a not very changed form, up to the t-90 which have it changed more) in existing tanks because the t-14 is built around the engine.....

Even if the Russian were able to deploy the Armata in large quantity it would still be difficult to really confirm it is far better than any of their previous older tanks. So far no types of defensive system has able to defeat US made Javelin or Stinger missiles. Tank warefare has coming to an age of near obsolete and Russia has no plan B for their tanks except to try grind out "new" tank models whenever they can. The economic sanctions sure don't help them either so is the current war in Ukraine.
