Hi professional materials science chemist with a photo chemistry background here that second test sent me into a fun rabbit hole of photo chemistry papers only to realize the answer was literally on the box of the cards and not actually chemistry. The glue they use to hold the colour changing materiel in place melts at about 25 degrees above room temperature and when it melts the dosimeter stops working because if light no hit colour change thing colour no change which turns out is why the box says "keep dosimeter at room temperature". so uhhh yeah turns out the extra padding paper in the box is actually instructions that contain useful information. who knew certainly not me so If I had to guess bright lights still make things hot and after a hot second (heyyyy incidental pun) under the light it got warm and the dosimeter stopped working like the instructions I discarded and had to find a pdf online of said it would.

UVC gets absorbed by oxygen, which builds ozone. That's why you won't get a lot of UVC exposure outside. Spectrometers are available for cheap. If you're interested in the physics of sunlight, there are wavelength intensitity charts available, which show what kind of color light (wavelength) and how much of it (intensity) arrives at different levels above seawater.
@BadNaturalist8 ай бұрын
You intrigue me with that sea level aspect! i live in driving distance of sea, below sea and mountain 🤔
@babybirdhome5 ай бұрын
Fun fact - hospitals use UVC light sources to create ozone intentionally to keep the facilities disinfected, since nothing really survives for very long while being beat up by UVC radiation. I don’t know if you’ll still physically _see_ those lights anymore, but back in the day at a few of the hospitals I spent time in, you’d see them hung high on the walls every so often, and you could tell when they were on because you’d see a very light colored, pale, bluish-violet “light” cast onto the wall above them.

The pump diode (the thing that throws energy rich blue light towards the phosphor in the LED that creates the white light) in white LEDs is usually 405nm which is a very deep blue color, close to the UVA range but not quite UVA. I think your test methods just happen to be sensitive to deep blue, close to UVA too. Incandescents do not produce nearly as much deep blue light as basic quality warm white LEDs, or as cool white studio lighting. The LEDs will definitely not produce any UVB or UVC light (the risky ones), simply because there is no way to produce those wavelenghts in a white LED. UVC leds exist these days but those are like 10 bucks per single, weak UVC led chip at the very least. If you get an UV meter, you have to be sure it is completely dead to 405nm or you'll get a false positive reading. You can test that by testing a standard blue LED.
@BadNaturalist8 ай бұрын
I will credit you in part 2 when i get the meter!
@emilysmith68978 ай бұрын
Incandescents actually produce WAYY more UVA than LEDs because the blackbody spectrum is wide and doesn't just stop at the boundaries of visible light. Even though the peak is at the long wavelengths and drops off at shorter wavelengths, it's still pretty strong going well out into UVA. LEDs are designed to have a spectrum that purposely doesn't extend far outside the visual range, so it doesn't extend much farther than 400nm, but it does still hit that region a bit.
@GrantFalkenburg3 ай бұрын
That is wrong. White LEDs typically use 450nm blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor to generate the white light. However, these 450nm blue LEDs have a gaussian-like distribution with a full-width half-maximum of 20nm or so. Meaning that the blue LEDs do generate a small amount of light near 400nm, but it should be relatively insignificant. I suspect that the cyanotype is sensitive to the 450nm blue light of the LED. LED datasheets typically show the emission spectrum. Search "white LED datasheet" online to get some examples. Compare the spectra of LEDs of different CRIs (e.g. 70 and 90), as they use different blue wavelengths and phosphors. Of particular interest is the Bridgelux 97 CRI Thrive LEDs which aim to get as close to the blackbody radiation spectra as possible.
@mopanda813 ай бұрын
cool suggestion for possible explanations here, not quite UV just very very blue!
@jinmushui1soul3 ай бұрын
@@GrantFalkenburgright? 405nm is very common "black light" UV. not too harmful to humans, enough to excite fluorophores but that's about all. still shouldn't look directly at it though.

Hate to point it out but infra means below, ultra means above, ie why UV is dangerous it it's higher energy than visible light. Also cyanotypes can react to Violet visible light, I've written words on them with a purple laser pointer

Healthy sunlight dosage is an interesting question that probably isn’t fully settled. Some things we think we know: sunlight is more lethal to many bacteria than to people, which is one of the causes of seasonal diseases that are suppressed during the summer. Additionally, people need sunlight for the natural intake of vitamin D. A carefully and slowly accumulated tan acquired without burning (such as a construction worker or farmer might have) may be well balanced as a protective layer against UVA and UVB. The biggest risk is being an inside cat (like an office worker) and then going to the beach; sudden shock doses like that are associated with the most cancer risk.

Aren't UV light in bulbs a thing that became popular because big business heard their workers would be more efficient if they had Vitimin D from UV exposure? That sounds horribly macabre, but I heard that was a thing. I used a normal ass office light as a grow light for my garden this year. They get a big string and tall stems because it is low-UV so they wanna reach for it, but it works in the months leading up to passing first frost.

Nice. I remember that UVC clarifiers (for aquariums) need to be housed in a specific kind of glass (quartz glass) so it doesn't block the UVC. It's easy for UVC to get absorbed by various materials (even just the oxygen in the atmosphere will absorb it before it reaches Earth). I wonder if the test was inaccurate. If the LED's glass panel was made of polycarbonate or some plastic, it would absorb practically all the UVC. I guess it's sort of reassuring, how the more ionizing the spectrum is, the more easily it's blocked. If these LEDs are damaging, I suspect UVB would be a more likely culprit than UVC, since UVB can travel much further through blocking materials. Though the typical dose should be way lower than in sunlight, so normal use shouldn't be cancerous to almost anyone. Maybe unless they have unusually little melanin, or they put the light right up against them for extended periods of time. Anyway, I like the experiment and would be delighted to see a follow-up, subscribed.

I'm allergic to UVA - which was honestly not a diagnosis I was ready to figure out how to deal with. Halogen and Fluorescent (including CFL) lights are AWFUL. I've not had issues with house scale LEDs in the "Warm white" color, but big like "convention center" scale LEDs can definitely provoke a reaction. Also UVA goes through glass...how fun.

I'd be surprised if a light made UV-C. Basically, the shorter the wavelength, the harder it is to make with an LED. Also, UV-C usually makes ozone, which is really easy to smell (smells like photocopier), but I think the wavelength to make ozone is most of UV-C, but not all of UV-C.
