I have only worked small areas of the Upper Peninsula however I have found flour gold in every river stream and Creek that I have checked from Marquette to Sault Ste. Marie. The gold is more plentiful the closer you get to Marquette in the streams creeks and rivers. Every Lake Superior beach that has any deposits of black sand I have found gold on. I have also found it on the Lake Michigan side wherever there have been black sand deposits. Sadly it's nothing to get excited about because it's all 100 mesh or smaller and it would take all summer and into the fall to find more than a half an ounce. So no one's going to get rich going after it but for a retired guy like myself it gives me a reason to get out of the house and explore this beautiful area.

Copper prospecting in the Keweenaw Peninsula Michigan, copper in pure nugget form is easy to find, a metal detector would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Not as valuable, but when you can find a handful or more a day it's a lot of fun.

The brule river that borders Michigan and Wisconsin has gold in it. And there is the remains of a mountain range in Dickinson County that is made up of granite and quartzite with lots of signs of gold in the quartzite but most of it would still be in the rock. As for the diamonds there is 13 kimberlite pipes in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in Iron ,Dickinson and Menominee counties they all contain diamonds but the diamonds are 1 millimeter and smaller. You can still access one of the kimberlite pipes and collect garnets and other things at the lake Ellen kimberlite pipe. The other pipes are all on private land and buried. The only reason this one is accessible is that a logging company dug in to the side of the pipe to use the material as crush gravel on the road. If you go there to collect garnets the best place to find them is on the road next to the pit. I just ran a field trip out there this weekend and got a decent amount. Hope this helps

More so than the flour gold you're referring too. I have lived in Michigan my whole life. Jackpot gold up north but gold to put a smile on your face is definitely in lower Michigan also.

Gravel bars in St. Clair County, small feeder creeks, and other Black River tributaries have flour gold in small quantities. Also black sands on the beach areas of Lake Huron have gold as well, though small amounts. Higher concentrations can be found in some of the hard pan cracks in some of the creeks (Boy Scout Camp Silver Trails in Silver Creek) or under large boulders. Mill creek is also another light producer in the gravel beds near Ruby, MI. Those same beds also produce lots of fossils too. In Oceana and Mason County, MI in small streams feeding the Pere Marquette River also have produce flour and some flake gold for me. Even some private property ditch culverts will collect fine gold from run off from the higher gravel areas. Know on the public lands that those are trout streams and the DNR will be on you if you are panning out of the season.

the gold copper and silver are secondary deposits from geothermal intrusions into the igneous basalt's that were laid down in that area before the mid continent rift started to form and then was stopped with compression that folded up the edges of that basalt leaving the cracks and fissures for the intrusions to take place. then the exposed/bent upwards end of the basalt has been weathered down leaving behind valuable minerals at the surface. but because of the nature of this geology and the proximity to the water table and lakes the mines can only operate inside a specific layer. strip mines do it for far cheaper thus the closing of mines in upper Michigan.

Geologically, shelter bay is the dividing line in the U.P and everything west of that point is bedrock/Precambrian rock at the surface or close to it as opposed to the eastern U.P which is compromised of a thick sandstone layer. The lower peninsula is unique in that it has several miles thick glacial till plus a several miles thick layer of deposits that were deposited in a major depression when the earth was covered in water. So with all that said is why you'll do better prospecting in the western U.P because more minerals are at the surface. This isn't to say you can't find gold in the lower or eastern U.P but, that gold would be deposited by the glaciers. **So Hemlock MI is the geographical center of MI, bedrock is 18 miles down at that point and for this reason a major earthquake in MI is almost non existent BUT, if it does happen we are in trouble!
