Great conversation. As a 56 year old out of work Audiologist I wish I knew more at the beginning of my career. I concentrated my career on hearing aids and did not learn other parts of the profession. I did not pursue my AuD because of cost. Maybe I'm paying for that now because I'm unable to find a job. I hope new Audiologists watch this and take into account everything that was said and helps this profession grow and be everything it can be.

Excellent conversation. Not at all surprised that we stalled. In my observations over 30 + years, we got distracted by the influx of mostly low-complexity wealthy patients (boomers and GenX) who really don't need more than we were at the Masters level. Having taught at 3 programs, we haven't upped our game beyond that. We have lots of rhetoric, but not much data showing our patients' outcomes have improved.

In Audiology defense, it was hard to find higher levels of audiology jobs as everything opened was hearing aid related. I believe we still need to create higher jobs that aren't all based on hearing aids. I feel it is too late for current audiologists until everything is revamped at the University level.

Currently AuDs have 80% of revenue from hearing aids. The idea for audiology to be medically focused and to hire/supervise hearing instrument specialists has been a successful model for optometrists. AuDs must be open minded to change. This model will allow us to evaluate, treat and monitor more people with hearing loss.

45:02 The majority of our training programs are not equipped to create practitioners on par with any other Doctoring profession. We need to close the majority of the programs that fail in this regard and consolidate to a handful of super programs that have busy, competitive clinics offering a full range of care including implants, HAT and direct care for ASL users.

Also Note that had our profession gotten the Limited Liability Profession, then only we, audiologists, can own the space. Isn't that true? We should have become autonomous first, then LLP.

46:37 But we have to also up our research game if we're going to play in the comorbitity sandbox. No more "peer-reviewed " papers with Ns of 15.
