when you talked about how museums aren't being used reminded me of one of my favorite shows called Mysteries at the Museum which sadly isn't airing anymore but it really used museum collections to jump back in time and teach you really cool history

In general, museums have copyright privilege over their specimens and often charge fees and/or shared citation in publications.

@christiangrant2931
@christiangrant2931 Жыл бұрын
@@itsgonnabeanaurfromme yeah, but is credit really due simply for owning something, I understand the importance of being able to track down specimen for peer review and transparency purposes especially in science, but why should that be behind a pay wall when the goal is the advancement of collective human knowledge, it only serves to actively make research more difficult. This is an issue with academic literature in general.

The squid in NHM London is called Archie and is part of the Spirit collection in the basement. It's normally not open to the public, but you can book a spot in the behind the scenes spirit collection tour to see it, alongside a ton of preserved wet specimens. You even get to see Darwin's collection too!
