In this Video I explore the rarely seen Sanya district, one of Tokyo's POOREST Neighborhood , Largest Slum in Japan.
In this walking tour, we delve into the lives of the homeless and the marginalized, discuss the economic struggles they face, and explore the historical ties to the Yakuza.
Discover the real stories behind the people who live in the shadows of one of the world's largest cities. Learn about the history of Sanya, from its origins as a labor district to its present-day challenges. We will also cover how local residents and organizations are responding to the area's social issues.
This video is not just a tour, but a deep dive into the social and historical undercurrents that shape Sanya. Perfect for those who want to understand the lesser-known aspects of Japanese society and the complexities of urban poverty.
🚶‍♂️Highlights of this video:
・Explore the Tokyo's POOREST Neighborhood
・Daily Lives of the Homeless and Impoverished
・Yakuza Conflict and Community Response

Your “slum” area is very clean. I wish we have an area like that in California especially for the veterans.

The biggest difference is there's no endemic drug problem in Japan. Alcohol in Japan is the same price as soft drinks/Coca cola/Soda pop. Hard drugs turn people into crazed animals ☹️

I learned a lot from your fine video . Due to the high costs of living there are more and more homeless people all around the world my friends . The work place also has become more automated , leading to not needing to higher people to do the work . Companies face higher costs every year and this leads them to replace us all at the drop of a hat in order to meet the customers need in away to remain completive and pay investors . Today they are the homeless , but the next day it could be anyone of us living a life that we did not plan for .

If you have an old Android phone or tablet, there's tonnes of great free Japanese Language apps. If you run the phone/tablet in Airplane mode after you've installed the apps the battery will last 5x longer and there'll be no ads to bother you either. My young son is learning Japanese and Maths on a 10yo Samsung Tablet I got from a Charity shop for $20. Even an old device can be very useful as long as it runs Android 5 or better. Watching NHK World on KZbin is also helpful for general knowledge about Japan. I hope this is helpful to you 👍

They work. If course they work, it's Japan. Our Homeless in Minneapolis pan handle in the grocery store parking lot near a fast food restaurant that starts pay at $17 hour plus meals & uniforms & can't find enough employees. Cultural differences.

Thing is, in the USA if you go to jail, that’s a death sentence for jobs. So even if someone applied with a record, they would get turned down if the restaurant had a strict background check. My friend tried to get a job for 7 years with a record and only managed to work at Walmart then fired in a year because they went to a funeral (which was approved by their boss.) So you can’t put everyone in the same boat .

It's very sad that these older Men don't have families to look after them ☹️ It's so typical though, that even the slums in Japan are tidy and well organized 🥹 The government needs to pay more attention to cheap housing and services for the poor, elderly, ill and disabled. Thank you for making this video to highlight the difficulties these people are facing...

Happens all around the world, even in Europe nowadays. Lots of "cheap", vacant housing in the remote areas. But since most if not all services have left as well, living in such far away regions becomes a hassle of its own, especially without a car of your own.
